Book The Planning of a New Town

Download or read book The Planning of a New Town written by London County Council and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-03-05 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of The Planning of a New Town in 1961 aroused remarkable interest. Its pages described a private new town, sponsored by the London County Council (LCC), to be built at Hook in Hampshire; a scheme that innovatively combined Garden City/New Town traditions with sensitivity to modern design. At its heart lay a multilevel and megastructural town centre intended to serve as a genuine focus for the gathering community, featuring shops and amenities placed on a pedestrian deck with cars and servicing beneath. The report itself proved extremely popular even though the New Town had fallen foul of political opposition at local and national levels and had been abandoned before any construction took place. It offers an insight into the flux of ideas that surrounded New Town development in the early 1960s. Analysing the world as it might have been not only identifies choices that were once available for shaping the built environment, it also often reveals once-cherished hopes and aspirations about how people might live in cities.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee revisits the report, by its predecessor committee, the Transport, Local Government and the Regions Committee, "New towns: their problems and future" (HC 603-I, session 2001-02, ISBN 9780215004666) and the Government's response (Cm. 5685, ISBN 9780101568524). The earlier report identified the need for further work to be done to identify the special needs of the post-War new towns and to learn the lessons of these huge planning experiments for the future. The Committee finds the Government response to the recommendations to have been partial, half-hearted and inadequate. This report explains why the recommendations of the predecessor committee remain relevant and why they should be acted on.

Book English Inland Trade

  • Author : Michael Hicks
  • Publisher : Oxbow Books
  • Release : 2015-07-31
  • ISBN : 1782978275
  • Pages : 233 pages

Download or read book English Inland Trade written by Michael Hicks and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2015-07-31 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Southampton brokage books are the best source for English inland trade before modern times. Internal trade always matched overseas trade. Between 1430 and 1540 the brokage series records all departures through Southampton’s Bargate, the owner, carter, commodity, quantity, destination and date, and many deliveries too. Twelve such years make up the database that illuminates Southampton’s trade with its extensive region at the time when the city was at its most important as the principal point of access to England for the exotic spices and dyestuffs imported by the Genoese. If Southampton’s international traffic was particularly important, the town’s commerce was representative also of the commonplace trade that occurred throughout England. Seventeen papers investigate Southampton’s interaction with Salisbury, London, Winchester, and many other places, long-term trends and short-term fluctuations. The rise and decline of the Italian trade, the dominance of Salisbury and emergence of Jack of Newbury, the recycling of wealth and metals from the dissolved monasteries all feature here. Underpinning the book are 32 computer-generated maps and numerous tables, charts, and graphs, with guidance provided as to how best to exploit and extend this remarkable resource. An accompanying web-mounted database (http://www.overlandtrade.org) enables the changing commerce to be mapped and visualised through maps and trade to be tracked week by week and over a century. Together the book and database provide a unique resource for Southampton, its trading partners, traders and carters, freight traffic and the genealogies of the middling sort.

Book The Greening of London 1920 2000

Download or read book The Greening of London 1920 2000 written by Matti O. Hannikainen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-term development of public green spaces such as parks, public gardens, and recreation grounds in London during the twentieth century is a curiously neglected subject, despite the fact that various kinds of green spaces cover huge areas in cities in the UK today. This book explores how and why public green spaces have been created and used in London, and what actors have been involved in their evolution, during the course of the twentieth century. Building on case studies of the contemporary boroughs of Camden and Southwark and making use of a wealth of archival material, the author takes us through the planning and creation stages, to the intended (and actual) uses and ongoing management of the spaces. By highlighting the rise and fall of municipal authorities and the impact of neo-liberalism after the 1970s, the book also deepens our understanding of how London has been governed, planned and ruled during the twentieth century. It makes a crucial contribution to academic as well as political discourse on the history and present role of green space in sustainable cities.
