Book Idioms

Download or read book Idioms written by Martin Everaert and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Idioms have always aroused the curiosity of linguists and there is a long tradition in the study of idioms, especially within the fields of lexicology and lexicography. Without denying the importance of this tradition, this volume presents an overview of recent idiom research outside the immediate domain of lexicology/lexicography. The chapters address the status of idioms in recent formal and experimental linguistic theorizing. Interdisciplinary in scope, the contributions are written by psycholinguists and theoretical and computational linguists who take mutual advantage of progress in all disciplines. Linguists supply the facts and analyses psycholinguists base their models and experiments on; psycholinguists in turn confront linguistic models with psycholinguistic findings. Computational linguists build natural language processing systems on the basis of models and frameworks provided by theoretical linguists and, sometimes psycholinguists, and set up large corpora to test linguistic hypotheses. Besides the fascination for idioms that make up such a large part of our knowledge of language, interdisciplinarity is one of the attractions of investigations in idiomatic language and language processing.

Idioms are confusing to the learner because the meaning of the individual words will often be familiar to them but the meaning of these words in combination is not as clear. There are an extensive number of idioms in the English language and it would be impractical for a non-native speaker to seriously consider learning them all. In this book you will find the more basic and common idioms used in general English (over 2500 examples given). Each entry has a brief description, an example showing how the idiom may be applied, and related expressions. Please note: This is a black and white print edition

Book Food and Drink Idioms in English

Download or read book Food and Drink Idioms in English written by Laura Pinnavaia and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Idioms carry an aura of mystery for all speakers, owing to the discrepancy between their literal and non-literal meanings. This book clears up some of these ambiguities, by examining a series of expressions that have derived from the most instinctive and essential of all human behaviour: eating and drinking. The quantity and quality of 276 food and drink idioms are explored, investigating two hundred and fifty years of English monolingual lexicography and forty years of usage as attested by contemporary linguistic corpora. The examination of these idioms’ syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, historical, social and cultural characteristics will foster in speakers a whole new approach to idiom comprehension and usage, and will constitute thought-provoking ground for further research in other idiom domains.
