The 2010 flood killed 1,600 people and caused around $10 billion in damage. The 2015 Karachi heat wave led to the death of more than 1,200 people. Climate change-related natural hazards may increase in frequency and severity in the coming decades. Climatic changes are expected to have wide-ranging impacts on Pakistan, affecting agricultural productivity, water availability, and increased frequency of extreme climatic events. Addressing these risks requires climate change to be mainstreamed into national strategy and policy. This publication provides a comprehensive overview of climate change science and policy in Pakistan.

Book Shock Waves

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephane Hallegatte
  • Publisher : World Bank Publications
  • Release : 2015-11-23
  • ISBN : 1464806748
  • Pages : 227 pages

Download or read book Shock Waves written by Stephane Hallegatte and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2015-11-23 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ending poverty and stabilizing climate change will be two unprecedented global achievements and two major steps toward sustainable development. But the two objectives cannot be considered in isolation: they need to be jointly tackled through an integrated strategy. This report brings together those two objectives and explores how they can more easily be achieved if considered together. It examines the potential impact of climate change and climate policies on poverty reduction. It also provides guidance on how to create a “win-win†? situation so that climate change policies contribute to poverty reduction and poverty-reduction policies contribute to climate change mitigation and resilience building. The key finding of the report is that climate change represents a significant obstacle to the sustained eradication of poverty, but future impacts on poverty are determined by policy choices: rapid, inclusive, and climate-informed development can prevent most short-term impacts whereas immediate pro-poor, emissions-reduction policies can drastically limit long-term ones.

Book The China Pakistan Axis

Download or read book The China Pakistan Axis written by Andrew Small and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Beijing-Islamabad axis plays a central role in Asia's geopolitics, from India's rise to the prospects for a post-American Afghanistan, from the threat of nuclear terrorism to the continent's new map of mines, ports and pipelines. China is Pakistan's great economic hope and its most trusted military partner; Pakistan is the battleground for China's encounters with Islamic militancy and the heart of its efforts to counter-balance the emerging US-India partnership. For decades, each country has been the other's only 'all-weather' friend. Yet the relationship is still little understood. The wildest claims about it are widely believed, while many of its most dramatic developments are hidden from the public eye. This book sets out the recent history of Sino-Pakistani ties and their ramifications for the West, for India, for Afghanistan, and for Asia as a whole. It tells the stories behind some of its most sensitive aspects, including Beijing's support for Pakistan's nuclear program, China's dealings with the Taliban, and the Chinese military's planning for crises in Pakistan. It describes a relationship increasingly shaped by Pakistan's internal strife, and the dilemmas China faces between the need for regional stability and the imperative for strategic competition with India and the USA."--Amazon.com.

Book The Indus Basin of Pakistan

Download or read book The Indus Basin of Pakistan written by Winston H. Yu and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2013 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study, Indus basin of Pakistan: the impacts of climate risks on water and agriculture was undertaken at a pivotal time in the region. The weak summer monsoon in 2009 created drought conditions throughout the country. This followed an already tenuous situation for many rural households faced with high fuel and fertilizer costs and the impacts of rising global food prices. Then catastrophic monsoon flooding in 2010 affected over 20 million people, devastating their housing, infrastructure, and crops. Damages from this single flood event were estimated at US dollar 10 billion, half of which were losses in the agriculture sector. Notwithstanding the debate as to whether these observed extremes are evidence of climate change, an investigation is needed regarding the extent to which the country is resilient to these shocks. It is thus timely, if not critical, to focus on climate risks for water, agriculture, and food security in the Indus basin of Pakistan.

Book excerpt: Today, fishing is the main extractive utilize of wildlife in the world. In 2010, the annual capture, uniting both wild capture and aquaculture, was 149 million tons (FAO, 2012). As regards 94% of all freshwater fisheries occur in developing countries (FAO, 2007). They give food and a livelihood for millions of the world's poorest people, and also give to the overall economic security by earnings of export commodity trade, tourism and recreation. Even though freshwater fishes have a long history of human-induced introduction, recent globalization has enhanced worldwide introduction events even more, and those introduced fish species are now apparent to be a major risk to ecosystems. Over the last two decades, numerous studies have been published on introduced fish species; however, it has been demanding for researchers to understand the magnitude of the impact and the fundamental mechanism of offensive. Recently, new perspectives in understanding invasive freshwater fish biology have been presented in a number of studies, which can be largely attributed to advances in analytical techniques and also to a growing need for proactive analysis in management strategies. This book brings together the state of the art information contributed by renowned authors and field experts on varied aspects of fish and fisheries biology including the age, growth, length weight, fecundity, reproductive behavior feeding habits, and necessary environment for each freshwater species. The content covers on new ecological perspectives, the need for research, and/or management implications with emphasis on technological advances, including biochemical taxonomy and stock identification, genetics and genetic manipulation, physiology, functional morphology, behavior, ecology, fisheries assessment, development, exploitation and conservation. This guide is intended to act as a valuable information resource for advanced graduate students, environmental and fisheries professionals, naturalists, and educators on the use of fishes as biological indicators.

Book Asian Transnational Security Challenges

Download or read book Asian Transnational Security Challenges written by Caroline Ziemke-Dickens and published by NCELTR. This book was released on 2010 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Council for Asian transnational Threat Research (CATR) has its roots in the initial months following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. Although the United States initially received widespread global support for what the Bush administration called the global war on terror, over time, as the US war on terror expanded its reach beyond al-Qaida's safe haven in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, allies and partners began to question some aspects of the US approach. Regional experts criticized the disproportionately military response to what they regarded as a threat with primarily political, social, and economic roots and the focus on religiously-motivated jihadists that overlooked other, largely secular, but no less dangerous, violent extremist movements. The regional view of the landscape of transnational threats in Asia extended well beyond al-Qaida, involving loose networks of violent groups that traded resources and know-how, but did not necessarily have a central leadership, common motivations, or a shared agenda. To understand and cope with this threat landscape would require a multilateral and nuanced approach, in which states across Asia could work in partnership with the United States to develop comprehensive responses to an increasingly complex threat environment."--DTIC abstract.
