Under the tutelage of manager Ned Hanlon, the Orioles perfected a style of play known as "scientific baseball," featuring such innovations as the sacrifice bunt, the hit-and-run, the squeeze play, and the infamous Baltimore chop. The team won three straight pennants from 1894 to 1896 and played the game with snap and ginger. Burr Solomon introduces us to Keeler and his colorful teammates, the men who reinvented baseball -- the fierce third baseman John McGraw, the avuncular catcher Wilbert Robinson, the spunky shortstop Hughey Jennings, and the heartthrob outfielder Joe Kelley, who carried a comb and mirror in his hip pocket to groom himself between batters. But championships and color were not enough for the barons of baseball, who began to consolidate team ownership for the sake of monopoly profits. In 1899, the Orioles' owners entered into a "syndicate" agreement with the ambitious men who ran the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers -- with disastrous results. The Orioles were destroyed (and the franchise folded), the city of Baltimore was relegated to minor-league status just when the city's industries were being swallowed up by national monopolies, and even Willie Keeler, a joyful innocent who wanted only to play ball, ultimately sold out as well. In Solomon's hands, the story of the Orioles' demise is a page-turning tale of shifting alliances, broken promises, and backstage maneuvering by Tammany Hall and the Brooklyn and Baltimore political machines on a scale almost unimaginable today. Out of this nefarious brew was born the American League, the World Series, and what we know as "modern baseball," but innocence was irretrievably lost. The fans of Baltimore, in fact, would have to wait more than half a century for the major leagues to return. Book excerpt: The struggle to integrate the Baltimore Orioles mirrored the fight for civil rights in Baltimore. The Orioles debuted in 1954, the same year the Supreme Court struck down public school segregation. As Baltimore experienced demonstrations, white flight and a 1968 riot, team integration came slowly. Black players--mostly outfielders--made cameo appearances as black fans stayed away in droves. The breakthrough came in 1966, with the arrival of a more enlightened owner, and African American superstar Frank Robinson. As more black players filled the roster, the Orioles dominated the American League from 1969 through much of the 1970s and into the early 1980s. Attempts to integrate the team's executive suite were less successful. While black players generally did not participate in civil rights actions, several under Robinson's leadership pushed for front office jobs for former black players. Drawing on primary sources and interviews with former executives, players and sportswriters, this book tells the story of the integration of the Orioles. The author describes how tensions between community leaders and team officials aborted negotiations to both increase black attendance and put an African American in the club's executive ranks.

During the divisive Civil War years, the Excelsiors became the Pastimes and saw stiff competition spring up all around them. The 1870's ushered in the early Major Leagues with the Lord Baltimores, but outside forces would conspire to throw the town into a six year baseball depression. In 1882, Baltimore became a last minute addition to the American Association and did so poorly that the club was completely reformed and renamed the Orioles in 1883. The Birds struggled for years, but they survived. The Orioles of the Beer and Whiskey League of the 1880's were a scandal ridden, debaucherous lot. In 1887 Baltimore took part in the short lived National Colored League, the first professional league for African American players and hosted its first game a Oriole Park. Bald Billy Barnie, the Orioles first manager and co-owner, wasn't the greatest tactician, but in the early 1890's he would begin to collect a fantastic core of players including Wilbert Robinson and John McGraw. After Barnie left out of frustration, club owner and brewmeister, Harry Von Der Horst, hired Ned Hanlon, a player with a bad knee at the end of his career. After cleaning out the old Bird cage, Hanlon completely remodeled the Orioles, who came from out of nowhere to win the 1894 National League Pennant. It was the beginning of a legendary dynasty that would last the decade.This is the untold history of baseball in Baltimore from its earliest years, and the long and winding road it traveled to win its first pennant - forever changing the game.
