Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An irreverent black comedy about sex, drugs, murder… and children's baseball. Dwayne Devero is just like you and me, except he simply doesn’t give a s**t any more. He’s had enough. He’s done with people living life wrong. You’ll do it right, or he’ll bury you under the bases at the ballpark where he coaches. It’s just that simple. Tired of poor decisions being made all around him, from the politics of player positions on his son's little league baseball team to the philandering of his wife in his own bedroom, Dwayne decides that breaking is better than bending. What follows is a wild ride full of carnage and revenge, led by a man who will stop at absolutely nothing to bring honor back to his family, his community… and children's baseball. Baseball Dads is a pitch black comedy in which one man takes on the duty of bludgeoning honor back into a sometimes dishonorable world.

Download or read book Service Before Self written by Steven A. Simon and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2007-07-13 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Service Before Self recounts the troubled relationship of a father and his son. Told in alternating points-of-view, the novel allows the reader to get into the minds of the two proud individuals as they struggle to cope with their disappointments and demons. For the first time in his life, Air Force Lieutenant General Ron Cody has nothing to do. His retirement ceremony two days before had been wonderful. The event had, however, been marred by the absence of Ron’s 19-year-old son, Josh. Among the sacrifices Ron made in his pursuit of career success was time with his family. His strained relationship with Josh is testament to that sacrifice. Attempts to motivate his son led to resentment and distrust. If only Josh could look up to Ron as Ron looked up to his own father, a man he had never known. George Cody had died during the D-Day invasion when Ron was only five years old. The bitterness Josh feels is due to his father having been largely absent for most of his childhood. The General’s Air Force service just seemed more important. Josh also resented his father’s expectation of perfection. Nothing Josh did was good enough for his old man. Josh had learned a painful lesson when Ron withheld college funds after Josh didn’t earn the B average his father deemed the minimum acceptable grades. In anger, Josh had moved out of the house and was working two menial jobs just to pay his expenses. Ron must deal with his feelings of confusion and worthlessness due to the abrupt end of his career and the sorry state of his family. He is further rocked by increasing doubts that his own father was the war hero Ron had been led to believe. For Josh, things look up when he meets a young woman and eventually becomes close to her nine-year-old son. When the woman returns to the abusive man who had fathered her son, Josh’s world threatens to collapse. As events unfold, both men discover that there is more than one way to serve. Even more consequentially, they are forced to confront the tremendous power and importance of the father-son bond. Service Before Self is Steve Simon’s second novel, following 2000’s On the Dead Run (Xlibris Corporation).

December 6, 1941: Best friends Frank and Stanley have it good. With their dads stationed at the Pearl Harbor naval base in Hawaii, the boys get to soak up the sunshine while writing and drawing their own comic books. World War II might be raging overseas, but so far America has stayed out of the fight. There's nothing to fear, right? December 7th, 1941: Everything implodes. Frank and Stanley are touring a battleship when Japanese planes zoom overhead, dropping bomb after bomb. As explosions roar and sailors scream, Frank and Stanley realize the unthinkable is happening: Japan is attacking America! The war has come to them. Frantically, the boys struggle to find safety. But disaster and danger are everywhere--from torpedoes underwater to bullets on the beach... to the shocking cruelty that their friends and neighbors show Stanley. Because his mom is Japanese-American, Stanley is suddenly seen as the "enemy." And Frank, who is white, cannot begin to understand what his friend is now facing. If the boys make it through this infamous day, can their friendship--and their dreams--survive? Or has everything they know been destroyed? Told with the immediacy, high-stakes action, and inventive storytelling that make Alan Gratz (Refugee,Ground Zero) one of today's biggest authors, this riveting look at the attack on Pearl Harbor explores themes of prejudice, power, and what it truly means to be a hero. Download or read book Anchor of My Heart written by Derrick Nearing and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book of short stories offers the readers a window into the life of the author as a young boy growing up in New Waterford, Cape Breton in the 1960’s. Focused on simple encounters with family, friends and those who came into his life, the stories show how seemingly unimportant daily interactions shaded and prepared him for future aspects of his life. Anchor of My Heart is a nostalgic reminder of the importance of simpler days which are often not fully appreciated at the time. For the author, the metaphor of an anchor represents the hope that sprouted from his youth and the moral guidance it has provided him during his adult years, sometimes in places very far from Cape Breton Island. It is a tribute to the earliest memories of those who came into the author’s life throughout his childhood and who helped form his world view.
Download or read book Shattered Glass in Birmingham written by Randall C. Jimerson and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2014-03-03 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shattered Glass in Birmingham traces the experiences of a white northern family during the climax of the civil rights movement in Alabama's largest city. Recounted primarily from Randall Jimerson's perspective as one of five children of Reverend Norman C. "Jim" Jimerson, executive director of the Alabama Council on Human Relations, the narrative explores the public and private impact of the civil rights struggle. Based on extensive archival research as well as oral histories, Shattered Glass in Birmingham offers the reader a ground-level view of prejudice, discrimination, violence, and courage. In 1961 the Alabama Council on Human Relations charged Rev. Jimerson with the critical task of improving communications and racial understanding between Alabama's black and white communities, employing him to travel extensively throughout the state to coordinate the activities of Human Relations chapters across Alabama. Along the way, he developed close working relationships with black and white ministers, educators, and businessmen and served as an effective bridge between the communities. Rev. Jimerson's success as a community activist was due largely to his ability to gain the trust of both white moderates and key figures in the civil rights movement: Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, Dr. Lucius Pitts, Rev. Ralph Abernathy, Rev. Wyatt T. Walker, Rev. Andrew Young, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He represents the hundreds of people who worked behind the scenes to help achieve the goals of civil rights activists. After Klan members killed four young girls in the bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in September 1963, Rev. Jimerson preserved several pieces of stained glass that had blown out of the church's windows. Similarly, Shattered Glass in Birmingham offers us a fresh and important perspective on these climactic events, supplying one of the many fragments that make up the complex story of our nation's fight for civil liberties.

Perhaps you have a good life and yet somehow it’s not enough to make you happy. Or perhaps you drink too much, eat too much, or risk too much in an attempt to feel something good. If so, you are not alone—and you may be suffering from emotional neglect. A practicing psychologist for more than twenty years, Jonice Webb has successfully treated numerous patients who come to her believing that something is missing inside them. It began with the simple goal of providing our children and grandchildren with a short history of the Demlow family and, specifically, the author’s experiences on the family farm in the 1950s. But it didn’t end there: the book took on a life of its own as it grew to include the Moeller, Ganun, and Roekle families as well as historical tidbits from the 1880s to the present.
