Book Base Pressure of Spheres and Supersonic Speeds

Download or read book Base Pressure of Spheres and Supersonic Speeds written by Richard Lehnert and published by . This book was released on 1953 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Base-pressure measurements were made on spheres with diameters from 0.7925 to 19.99 cm at M = 1.57 to 5.0 to study Mach and Reynolds number effects between Re = 0.06 x 10 to the 6th power and 1.4 x 10 to the 6th power. The data showed that the base-pressure component of the total-drag coefficient is a function of the Reynolds number and can be affected by boundary-layer disturbances. The estimated Reynolds number effect on the total-drag coefficient was very small: a maximum of 10% at M = 1.57 and a minimum of 1% at M = 4.24. The effects of Mach number on wave- and base-drag coefficients cancelled each other so that the total-drag coefficient was almost independent of Mach number. The good agreement between wake configurations determined from wind-tunnel schlieren photographs and firing-range shadowgraphs at correponding Mach and Reynolds numbers suggested the extension of comparative tests with spheres to higher Reynolds numbers in both the wind tunnel and firing range. The failure to detect a critical Reynolds number for spheres at supersonic speeds was attributed to supersonic turbulent separation effects similar to those for subsonic regions.

Book Investigation of the Effect of Low Thrust Levels on the Base Pressure of a Cylindrical Body at Supersonic Speeds

Download or read book Investigation of the Effect of Low Thrust Levels on the Base Pressure of a Cylindrical Body at Supersonic Speeds written by T. A. Martin and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of supersonic wind tunnel tests are presented which show the effects of varying nozzle geometry, location, and supply pressure on the base pressure of a cylindrical body at zero angle of attack. The purpose of the tests was to investigate the parametric influences in the regions where base pressure is near a minimum, which occurs in the lower range of thrust levels. A bibliography of related experimental results is also included.

Book An Experimental Investigation of the Relation Between Skin Friction and Heat Transfer on the Surface of a Sphere at Supersonic Speeds Part I Pressure Distribution and Boundary Layer Measurements on a Sphere

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of the Relation Between Skin Friction and Heat Transfer on the Surface of a Sphere at Supersonic Speeds Part I Pressure Distribution and Boundary Layer Measurements on a Sphere written by Richard M. Hartley and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to design a balance mechanism capable of measuring the skin-friction drag on a small surface element of a sphere subjected to supersonic flow, it was necessary to determine the order of magnitude of the skin-friction and pressure loads on such an element. To this end, wind tunnel tests were conducted, principally at a Mach number of 2.86, on a 3-inch-diameter sphere (and hemisphere) to measure the boundary-layer characteristics at one point and to determine the pressure distribution. From these measurements, approximate maximum steady-state friction and pressure loads were determined which will be used as starting points for the design of a skin-friction balance. (Author).

Book Sphere Drag in a Low Density Supersonic Flow

Download or read book Sphere Drag in a Low Density Supersonic Flow written by Jerome Aroesty and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sphere drag coefficients were measured in the Berkeley Low Density Wind Tunnel at Mach equals 2, 4, and 6, and free stream Reynolds numbers between 10 and 10,000 for both insulated and cold wall conditions. The measurements indicate that sphere drag in this regime is strongly dependent on the Reynolds number behind a normal shock wave, and only weakly dependent on Mach number. In addition, it was found that a decrease in wall temperature/stagnation temperature (T sub w/T sub o) from 1 to 0.26 was accompanied by a 5 - 10% decrease in the drag coefficient. A precision microbalance was used to obtain data for insulated spheres, and a moving model technique was used to obtain data for small spheres falling freely through a wind tunnel jet. These latter tests were performed using both cold and insulated models. The results on insulated spheres at M equal 2 and 4 were in good agreement with the measurements of other investigators. The results of the cold wall tests indicate that for Mach numbers greater than 5 in air, sphere drag coefficients are a function only of T sub w/T sub o and the post normal shock Reynolds number. Book The Pressure at the Base of Bodies at Supersonic Speeds

Download or read book The Pressure at the Base of Bodies at Supersonic Speeds written by H. H. Kurzweg and published by . This book was released on 1948 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The designer of supersonic missiles needs accurate values of the aerodynamic forces and their distribution over the entire surface of the missile. Bodies with flat bases or blunt tails have a base drag which can be quite considerable at high speeds, thus playing an important part in the energy balance. Present knowledge of base pressures, particularly at high Mach numbers, is scanty. This report deals with this problem. The available data are discussed, the main test methods are subjected to critical study, and suggestions are made for further wind-tunnel measurements.
