  • Pages : 266 pages

Download or read book National Parks written by Grazia Polisciano and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, there has been an increased need to understand ecosystems in order to be able to manage them for conservation and sustainable use. Yet examples of how research directly supports conservation are rare. This book examines the impact of disturbance, specifically habitat fragmentation and forest harvesting in national parks. This book also presents the results of observations of bulk deposition and its physico-chemical properties in national parks in Poland and tries to identify tendencies of change in its composition. In addition, research on Uganda's forest and savanna parks are reviewed, stimulating thinking about what kind of research is of value in guiding conservation actions. Over the past several decades, a highly polarised debate has emerged in the conservation literature about whether national parks in lesser developed countries should follow the "Yellowstone model" of strict protection or whether new types of national park should be developed. The authors of this book assess the U.S. national park experience and ways in which to balance people's needs and desires with nature protection in national parks. Other chapters in this book examine the abundance and diversity of vertebrate fauna in national parks in India, the roles of rhodolith beds and their impact in the marine national parks of the Gulf of California management, the impacts of multiple or extreme storms on national seashores, and the impact of invasive plant species on biodiversity and ecological integrity of national parks.

Book Cumulative Effects Assessment Study Kouchibouguac National Park

Download or read book Cumulative Effects Assessment Study Kouchibouguac National Park written by Sarah A. Kalff and published by Halifax, N.S. : Parks Canada, Atlantic Region. This book was released on 1998 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cumulative effects assessment (CEA) seeks to overcome the weaknesses inherent in conventional project-focused environmental assessment by expanding the spatial and temporal boundaries of the assessment. In this study, the assessment boundaries include the six broad systems contained in Kouchibouguac National Park, New Brunswick, as well as the park as a whole and land outside but adjacent to park boundaries. The first section is a brief overview of cumulative effects, CEA, and the CEA approach used in the study. The second section introduces the park's natural and cultural resources along with the natural changes occurring within the park. The third section reviews legislation, policy, and plants guiding park management in order to identify the goals and targets critical for focusing the study and for evaluating the importance of effects. The fourth section describes past, present, and proposed projects and activities in the park and region and their environmental effects. The final section identifies important cumulative effects issues and discusses the importance of these effects.

Book Geoindicators for Monitoring Canada s National Parks

Download or read book Geoindicators for Monitoring Canada s National Parks written by David M. Welch and published by [Halifax, N.S.] : Parks Canada. This book was released on 2002 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parks Canada has adopted an ecological integrity monitoring framework to guide its biennial assessment of the parks system. This paper focusses on the search for indicators of geological, geomorphological, and soil features, processes, & stresses for that framework. The paper describes indicators developed by the International Union of Geological Sciences, the Canadian Environmental Monitoring & Assessment Network, and the author that have been combined into one list, and assesses each indicator for three criteria: management relevance, linkage with other indicators, and practicality for monitoring. A short list of selected indicators is proposed for further consideration for national park system monitoring. The author also selects indicators that seem best matched to the local environment in five national parks in order to show the variation in indicators among local situations.
