Book Barriers and Transport in Unsteady Flows

Download or read book Barriers and Transport in Unsteady Flows written by Sanjeeva Balasuriya and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ?Fluids that mix at geophysical or microscales tend to form well-mixed areas and regions of coherent blobs. The Antarctic circumpolar vortex, which mostly retains its structure while moving unsteadily in the atmosphere, is an example of a coherent structure. How do such structures exchange fluid with their surroundings? What is the impact on global mixing? What is the "boundary" of the structure, and how does it move? Can these questions be answered from time-varying observational data?? This book addresses these issues from the perspective of the differential equations that must be obeyed by fluid particles. In these terms, identification of the boundaries of coherent structures (i.e., "flow barriers"), quantification of transport across them, control of the locations of these barriers, and optimization of transport across them are developed using a rigorous mathematical framework. The concepts are illustrated with an array of theoretical and applied examples that arise from oceanography and microfluidics.? Barriers and Transport in Unsteady Flows: A Melnikov Approach?provides an extensive introduction and bibliography, specifically elucidating the difficulties arising when flows are unsteady and highlighting relevance in geophysics and microfluidics; careful and rigorous development of the mathematical theory of unsteady flow barriers within the context of nonautonomous stable and unstable manifolds, richly complemented with examples; and chapters on exciting new research in the control of flow barriers and the optimization of transport across them.

Book Leadership

Download or read book Leadership written by Michael Z. Hackman and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2013-04-03 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leadership is an integral component of the human experience and of practical importance to all. For nearly 25 years, the multiple editions of Hackman and Johnsons outstanding work have been the backbone of leadership courses at hundreds of colleges and universities. The authors extend this tradition of excellence in the Sixth Edition, which continues to serve as a valuable catalyst for generating new insights, debating controversial issues, and contributing to the ongoing dialogue on leading and following. Hackman and Johnson illuminate our understanding of leadership by approaching it as a communication-based activity. They artfully balance research and theory with practical, real-world suggestions for improving communication competence and leadership effectiveness in small-group, organizational, and public contexts. The comprehensive Sixth Edition adds discussions of organizational politics, project leadership, executive-level teams, adaptive leadership, intergroup leadership, sensemaking, and in extremis leadership. Readers will also appreciate the expanded treatment of bad leadership, emotional competencies, followership styles, charisma, leader development, crisis leadership, and virtual team leadership. Case studies cover such timely issues as the pink slime controversy, the legacy of Steve Jobs, banning super-sized soft drinks, the scandal at Penn State University, and the Miracle on the Hudson. Abundant examples, case studies, self-assessments, and research highlights enhance the presentation. Moreover, wide-ranging application exercises offer multiple opportunities for readers to review and apply the skills covered in the chapters.

Download or read book Dialogue in Palestine written by Nadia Naser-Najjab and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-01-23 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1993, various international donors have poured money into a People-to-People (P2P) diplomacy programme in Palestine. This grassroots initiative – still funded by prominent external donors today - seeks to foster public engagement through contact and therefore remove deeply embedded barriers. This book examines the limited nature of this 'contact' and explains why the P2P framework, which was ostensibly concerned with the promotion of peace, ultimately served to reinforce conflict and power relations. The book is based on the author's own experience of the solidarity activities during the First Intifada and her first-hand involvement as a coordinator of the P2P projects implemented during the 1990s. It provides a much-needed critical account of the internationally-sponsored peace process and develops new theoretical analyses of settler colonialism.
