Book Life Traces of the Georgia Coast

Download or read book Life Traces of the Georgia Coast written by Anthony J. Martin and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-14 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered what left behind those prints and tracks on the seashore, or what made those marks or dug those holes in the dunes? Life Traces of the Georgia Coast is an up-close look at these traces of life and the animals and plants that made them. It tells about how the tracemakers lived and how they interacted with their environments. This is a book about ichnology (the study of such traces) and a wonderful way to learn about the behavior of organisms, living and long extinct. Life Traces presents an overview of the traces left by modern animals and plants in this biologically rich region; shows how life traces relate to the environments, natural history, and behaviors of their tracemakers; and applies that knowledge toward a better understanding of the fossilized traces that ancient life left in the geologic record. Augmented by illustrations of traces made by both ancient and modern organisms, the book shows how ancient trace fossils directly relate to modern traces and tracemakers, among them, insects, grasses, crabs, shorebirds, alligators, and sea turtles. The result is an aesthetically appealing and scientifically grounded book that will serve as source both for scientists and for anyone interested in the natural history of the Georgia coast.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ground-Water Supply for the Dare Beaches Sanitary District The Dare Beaches Sanitary District is in the east-central por tion of Bodie Island, Dare County, N. C. This part of the island is bordered on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and on the west by Cur rituck Sound, Albemarle Sound, Kitty Hawk Bay, Buzzard Bay, and Roanoke Sound (fig. 1 and pl. U. S. Highway 158 parallels the ocean beach in the sanitary district; the highway at all places is less than feet west of the beach as it traverses the 15-mile long district. The sanitary district ends at the north where U. S. Highway 158 turns west toward Wright Memorial Bridge and on the south at Whalebone Junction where U. S. Highway 158 is joined by U. S. Highways 64 and 264 (pl. Throughout most of this area the sanitary district extends from high tide at the ocean beach west ward to a'line 700 feet west of U. S. Highway 158. Boundaries of the sanitary district deviate from this pattern at two locations, one in the northern part and one in the southern part of the dis trict. At these places, the district boundaries extend westward to the sound side of the island to include sound-side beach develop ments. The area within the limits of the district includes most of the developed properties north of Whalebone Junction, except for Kitty Hawk Village. This village is located west of the district. The incorporated town of Kill Devil Hills, the village of Nags Head, Kitty Hawk Beach, and various other beach developments are located within the district. Bodie Island is the northernmost member of a group of coastal islands known as the North Carolina outer banks. These islands, which are barrier beaches between the-atlantic Ocean to the east and the various sounds and bays to the west, form the eastern rim of the State. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At first glance, the beach may appear to be an endless, flat, monotone landscape meant only for swimming, snoozing, or working on your tan. Upon closer inspection, though, the beach reveals that it has myriad treasures for the curious to locate, such as ephemeral beach ripples decorating the sand, traces of miniature organisms inscribed on dunes, and armored mudballs. Atlantic Coast Beaches, from Maine to Florida, are full of amazing features formed by the interactions between tides, currents, bedrock, weather, beach critters, and much more. Written for a general audience, Atlantic Coast Beaches: A Guide to Ripples, Dunes, and Other Natural Features of the Seashore covers everything, from microscopic nematodes to the potentially cataclysmic changes occurring along the coastline due to rising sea level. Its clear writing, illustrative photographs, and instructive diagrams answer some curious questions, such as why do some sands bark and sing, how do miniature sand volcanoes form, and how do barrier islands migrate?

Book Ground Water Supply of Cape Hatteras National Seashore Recreational Area Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ground Water Supply of Cape Hatteras National Seashore Recreational Area Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Joel O. Kimrey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-27 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ground-Water Supply of Cape Hatteras National Seashore Recreational Area, Vol. 2 The Cape Hatteras National Seashore Recreational Area, North Carolina, is on a group of coastal islands known as the outer banks. These islands, forming the eastern rim of the State, are barrier beaches that separate the Atlantic Ocean to the east from the various sounds to the west. Park facilities extend for some 77 miles along these barrier beaches and occupy a part of three is lands Bodie, Hatteras, and Ocracoke (fig. I). Shifting sand dunes blanket these islands in areas not stabil ized by vegetation. Sand dunes generally border the ocean beaches, and tidal marshes occur on the sound-side of the islands. The is lands comprising the Park facilities range in width from a maximum of about 3 miles at Cape Hatteras to a minimum of less than a quarter of a mile along stretches of Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands. Elevations vary from sea level in the sound-side-marshes to as much as 60 feet above sea level on some dunes. Average precipitation ranges from inches at Manteo to inches at Hatteras (fig. Being greatest between July and October. The surface sands of the area have high permeabilities and absorb rainfall rapidly. If surface runoff occurs, it is probably confined to the tidal marshes bordering the sounds. Rainfall moves directly downward to the water table, then discharges by lateral seepage to the ocean and the sounds. Book Treatise on Geomorphology

Download or read book Treatise on Geomorphology written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-02-27 with total page 6392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The changing focus and approach of geomorphic research suggests that the time is opportune for a summary of the state of discipline. The number of peer-reviewed papers published in geomorphic journals has grown steadily for more than two decades and, more importantly, the diversity of authors with respect to geographic location and disciplinary background (geography, geology, ecology, civil engineering, computer science, geographic information science, and others) has expanded dramatically. As more good minds are drawn to geomorphology, and the breadth of the peer-reviewed literature grows, an effective summary of contemporary geomorphic knowledge becomes increasingly difficult. The fourteen volumes of this Treatise on Geomorphology will provide an important reference for users from undergraduate students looking for term paper topics, to graduate students starting a literature review for their thesis work, and professionals seeking a concise summary of a particular topic. Information on the historical development of diverse topics within geomorphology provides context for ongoing research; discussion of research strategies, equipment, and field methods, laboratory experiments, and numerical simulations reflect the multiple approaches to understanding Earth’s surfaces; and summaries of outstanding research questions highlight future challenges and suggest productive new avenues for research. Our future ability to adapt to geomorphic changes in the critical zone very much hinges upon how well landform scientists comprehend the dynamics of Earth’s diverse surfaces. This Treatise on Geomorphology provides a useful synthesis of the state of the discipline, as well as highlighting productive research directions, that Educators and students/researchers will find useful. Geomorphology has advanced greatly in the last 10 years to become a very interdisciplinary field. Undergraduate students looking for term paper topics, to graduate students starting a literature review for their thesis work, and professionals seeking a concise summary of a particular topic will find the answers they need in this broad reference work which has been designed and written to accommodate their diverse backgrounds and levels of understanding Editor-in-Chief, Prof. J. F. Shroder of the University of Nebraska at Omaha, is past president of the QG&G section of the Geological Society of America and present Trustee of the GSA Foundation, while being well respected in the geomorphology research community and having won numerous awards in the field. A host of noted international geomorphologists have contributed state-of-the-art chapters to the work. Readers can be guaranteed that every chapter in this extensive work has been critically reviewed for consistency and accuracy by the World expert Volume Editors and by the Editor-in-Chief himself No other reference work exists in the area of Geomorphology that offers the breadth and depth of information contained in this 14-volume masterpiece. From the foundations and history of geomorphology through to geomorphological innovations and computer modelling, and the past and future states of landform science, no "stone" has been left unturned!

Book excerpt: The Goodwin-Niering Center for Conservation Biology and Environmental Studies at Connecticut College is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary program that builds on one of the nation’s leading undergraduate environmental studies programs. The C- ter fosters research, education, and curriculum development aimed at understanding contemporary ecological challenges. One of the major goals of the Goodwin-Niering Center is to enhance the understanding of both the College community and the general public with respect to ecological, political, social, and economic factors that affect natural resource use and preservation of natural ecosystems. To this end, the C- ter has offered six conferences at which academicians, representatives of federal and state government, people who depend on natural resources for their living, and in- viduals from non-government environmental organizations were brought together for an in-depth, interdisciplinary evaluation of important environmental issues. On April 6 and 7, 2007, the Center presented the Elizabeth Babbott Conant interdisciplinary conference on Saving Biological Diversity: Weighing the Protection of Endangered Species vs. Entire Ecosystems. The Beaver Brook Foundation; Audubon Connecticut, the state of?ce of the National Audubon Society; the Connecticut Chapter of The Nature Conservancy; Connecticut Forest and Park Association and the Connecticut Sea Grant College Program joined the Center as conference sponsors. During this two-day conference we learned about conservation and endangered species fromawiderange ofperspectives. Likeallof theconferences sponsored bythe Goodwin-Niering Center, this conference was broadly interdisciplinary, with pres- tations by economists, political scientists, and conservation biologists.
