Book Wheeling Souvenir Coloring Book

Download or read book Wheeling Souvenir Coloring Book written by Mike Duve and published by . This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author grew up across the river from Wheeling in Ohio. He was a frequent visitor to Wheeling as it was once a hub of commerce and industry. In 2015 he created a T- Shirt with more than 200 names of businesses from Wheeling's past. When the shirt was released more name and stories poured in on Facebook. There was no way to fit them all on a shirt, or even a blanket. The memory of many of these businesses would soon be forgotten to history if not recorded somewhere. So he decided it would be best to record them in a book. Inspired by all of these fond memories of the schools they attended, the businesses they patronized and the people they met along they way, expressed on Facebook by current and former residents of Wheeling West Virginia, the author has attempted to capture them in this Commemorative Coloring Book. Featuring 140 pages of memories and fun. With basic images that are easy for a child to color and abstract and complicated images to challenge the skilled colorist. Why a coloring book? Because they are FUN! They don't require batteries, the internet or a smartphone to enjoy. To "save" your work, just close the cover. Many people will never color a single image in this book. They will enjoy it just the way it is. If you do intend to color it you may want to order another copy to put away as a keepsake. No matter how many you order, you will always need more copies. Someone you didn't think of always sees it and asks for one. It is the perfect gift for anyone from the Wheeling area. Be sure to share with the young people in your family who never knew Wheeling in it's glory days. They never parked at the Wharf and walked to the Court, Coronet or Victoria Theaters to see a movie. They never had the pleasure of having lunch in the "Tea Room" in Stone and Thomas or Dinner at Elby's or Ernie's. They will never dance at the White Palace or Tin Pan Alley. They will never enjoy a Pizza at Augsto's or see a produce truck go through the neighborhood in the summer. Go through the pages slowly and see how many people, schools, places and businesses you remember. With more than 500 names of people, schools and businesses, there are bound to be some mistakes. The only source the author had to rely on were peoples recollections. He has tried to include as many as possible. There may be some spelling errs and some businesses may not be found where you would expect. No offence was intended by any errs or omissions. If you find something wrong, please let the author know, so it can be set right in the next edition.

Book Blood at the Root A Racial Cleansing in America

Download or read book Blood at the Root A Racial Cleansing in America written by Patrick Phillips and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2016-09-20 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[A] vital investigation of Forsyth’s history, and of the process by which racial injustice is perpetuated in America." —U.S. Congressman John Lewis Forsyth County, Georgia, at the turn of the twentieth century, was home to a large African American community that included ministers and teachers, farmers and field hands, tradesmen, servants, and children. But then in September of 1912, three young black laborers were accused of raping and murdering a white girl. One man was dragged from a jail cell and lynched on the town square, two teenagers were hung after a one-day trial, and soon bands of white “night riders” launched a coordinated campaign of arson and terror, driving all 1,098 black citizens out of the county. The charred ruins of homes and churches disappeared into the weeds, until the people and places of black Forsyth were forgotten. National Book Award finalist Patrick Phillips tells Forsyth’s tragic story in vivid detail and traces its long history of racial violence all the way back to antebellum Georgia. Recalling his own childhood in the 1970s and ’80s, Phillips sheds light on the communal crimes of his hometown and the violent means by which locals kept Forsyth “all white” well into the 1990s. In precise, vivid prose, Blood at the Root delivers a "vital investigation of Forsyth’s history, and of the process by which racial injustice is perpetuated in America" (Congressman John Lewis).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A longitudinal study of race relations in a major southern city, Macon Black and White examines the ways white and black Maconites interacted over the course of the entire twentieth century. Beginning in the 1890s, in what has been called the nadir of race relations in America, Andrew M. Manis traces the arduous journey toward racial equality in the heart of Central Georgia. The book describes how, despite incremental progress toward that goal, segregationist pressures sought to silence voices for change on both sides of the color line. Providing a snapshot of black-white relations for every decade of the twentieth century, this compellingly written story highlights the ways indigenous development in Macon combined with other statewide, regional, and national factors to shape the struggle for and against racial equality. Manis shows how both African-Americans and a cadre of white moderates, separately and at times together, gradually increased pressure for change in a conservative Georgia city. Showcasing how disfranchisement, lynching, interracial efforts toward the humanization of segregation, the world wars, and the Civil Rights Movement affected the pace of change, Manis describes the eventual rise of a black political class and the election of Macon's first African-American mayor. The book uses demographic realities as well as the perspectives of black and white Maconites to paint a portrait of contemporary black-white relations in the city. Manis concludes with suggestions on how the city might continue the struggle for racial justice and overcome the unutterable separation that still plagues Macon in the early years of a new century. Macon Black and White is a powerful storythat no one interested in racial change over time can afford to miss.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jamboree! To many country music fans the word conjures up memories of Saturday nights around the family radio listening to live broadcasts from that haven of hillbilly music, West Virginia. From 1926 through the 1950s, as Ivan Tribe shows in his lively history, country music radio programming made the Mountain State a mecca for country singers and instrumentalists from all over America. Wilma Lee and Stoney Cooper, Little Jimmy Dickens, Hawkshaw Hawkins, Red Sovine, Blaine Smith, Curly Ray Cline, Grandpa Jones, Cowboy Loye, Rex and Eleanor Parker, Lee Moore, Buddy Starcher, Doc and Chickie Williams, and Molly O'Day were among the many who came to prominence via West Virginia radio. Wheeling's "WWVA jamboree," first broadcast in 1933, attracted a wide audience, especially after 1942, when the station increased its power. The show's success spawned numerous competitors, as new stations all over West Virginia followed WWVA's lead in headlining country music. The state also played an important role in the early recording industry. The Tweedy Brothers, Frank Hutchison, Roy Harvey, Blind Alfred Reed, Frank Welling and John McGhee, Cap and Andy, and the Kessinger Brothers were among West Virginians whose waxings contributed to the state's reputation for fine native musicianship. So too did those who sought out and recorded the Mountaineer folksong heritage. As Nashville's dominance has grown since the 1960s, West Virginia's leadership in country music has lessened. Young performers must now seek fame outside their native state. But, as Ivan Tribe demonstrates, the state's numerous outdoor festivals continue to keep alive the heritage of country music's "mountain mama."
