Book Wind Distributions and Interlevel Correlations Surface to 60 Km

Download or read book Wind Distributions and Interlevel Correlations Surface to 60 Km written by Arthur J. Kantor and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information is provided in this report on the interlevel correlations of the east/west and north/south wind components for altitudes between the surface and 60 km, with special emphasis on levels between 25 km and 60 km. Mean monthly wind speeds and day-to-day variations due to synoptic changes in weather patterns are included. Estimates are also given of the probability of extreme wind speeds at specific locations and altitudes up to 60 km. A statistical technique that can be used to obtain estimates of the integrated effect of wind on the trajectories and impact points of reentry vehicles is presented, and an example of its application is given. These effects due to the winds must be considered, along with the density effects, in the design and operation of guidance systems for reentry vehicles and for targeting ballistic missiles.

Book excerpt: Few people understand the difficulties animal rights activists undergo. Some regard them as extremists or eccentric; rebels or ridiculous. Either way, the activists battle through all the human apathy and ignorance to reveal their good intentions; to be a voice to the voiceless and protect the defenseless. This book gives the public a true rendition of how some of us endure many obstacles while attempting to change the public outlook on animal and human coexistence. Until the human populous stops referring to animals as "property" very little will be accomplished in the fight to preserve animal dignity, welfare and protection. Yet the battle will never cease until mankind realizes the threat on overall humanity, should we give up on our animal friends; domestic, farm and wild. There are both positives and negatives within the various animal rights groups while each can reveal to us effective and unique end results toward the goal of animal liberation. Great strides will be made yet at a cost that many activists will inevitably bear . . . all in the name of liberation . . .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a young man growing up near Basel, Jung was fascinated and disturbed by tales of Nietzsche's brilliance, eccentricity, and eventual decline into permanent psychosis. These volumes, the transcript of a previously unpublished private seminar, reveal the fruits of his initial curiosity: Nietzsche's works, which he read as a student at the University of Basel, had moved him profoundly and had a lifelong influence on his thought. During the sessions the mature Jung spoke informally to members of his inner circle about a thinker whose works had not only overwhelmed him with the depth of their understanding of human nature but also provided the philosophical sources of many of his own psychological and metapsychological ideas. Above all, he demonstrated how the remarkable book Thus Spake Zarathustra illustrates both Nietzsche's genius and his neurotic and prepsychotic tendencies. Since there was at that time no thought of the seminar notes being published, Jung felt free to joke, to lash out at people and events that irritated or angered him, and to comment unreservedly on political, economic, and other public concerns of the time. This seminar and others, including the one recorded in Dream Analysis, were given in English in Zurich during the 1920s and 1930s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maurice Hornocker is recognized worldwide as the first scientist to unravel the secrets of America's most enigmatic predator—the mountain lion. A story of redemption, this book is a memoir about the never-before-told adventures, challenges, and controversies surrounding Hornocker’s groundbreaking study of cougars in the remote reaches of the Idaho Primitive Area. North America's biggest cat was once killed for bounty dollars, slaughtered with impunity and driven toward extinction. But today's cat of intrigue, despite our lingering fears and misconceptions, has returned to much of its native range in the western United States and gained respect as a predator integral and necessary to wild ecosystems. This turnaround was triggered by one man: Maurice Hornocker. Cougars on the Cliff recounts the early years of his research (1964–1973) when he tracked lions following a dog’s nose and footprints in the snow—before telemetry was available. Hornocker was first to learn that mountain lions living in stable populations limit their own numbers through territoriality and a concept he called “mutual avoidance.” This insight flew in the face of long-held beliefs that cougars were prolific and wanton killers that needed to be controlled as vermin. Thanks to Hornocker’s work, today cougars can be found throughout the West and have even started to reclaim their place in New England.
