Book Bargaining Responses to the Technology Revolution

Download or read book Bargaining Responses to the Technology Revolution written by James N. Dertouzos and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 1985 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents the results of research on how the bargaining relationship between workers and firm managers affects the introduction of new technologies. Using data from the newspaper industry, the research documents the extent of technology diffusion and labor displacement, and explains why firms and workers under varying circumstances rely on different bargaining responses to incorporate new technologies into production processes. The following are among the main empirical results: (1) worker layoffs are rare; (2) nonunion firms are no less likely to compensate workers than union firms; (3) the most frequently observed bargaining response is natural attrition; (4) nonunion firms exhibit greater reliance on programs to retrain workers for other jobs in the firm; and (5) group-owned newspapers did not adopt the new technology more quickly. Other characteristics with predictable effects on response decisions quantified in this report include the size of the firm, market growth, whether the firm was purchased near the time of technology adoption, and the age distribution of workers.

Book Collective Bargaining in the Private Sector

Download or read book Collective Bargaining in the Private Sector written by Paul F. Clark and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Private-sector collective bargaining in the United States is under siege. Many factors have contributed to this situation, including the development of global markets, a continuing antipathy toward unions by managers, and the declining effectiveness of strikes. This volume examines collective bargaining in eight major industries--airlines, automobile manufacturing, health care, hotels and casinos, newspaper publishing, professional sports, telecommunications, and trucking--to gain insight into the challenges the parties face and how they have responded to those challenges. The authors suggest that collective bargaining is evolving differently across the industries studied. While the forces constraining bargaining have not abated, changes in the global environment, including new security considerations, may create opportunities for unions. Across the industries, one thing is clear--private-sector collective bargaining is rapidly changing.

Book Understanding Media Production

Download or read book Understanding Media Production written by Paul Dwyer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using in-depth analysis of film, TV, news and online productions, Understanding Media Production shows how media theory helps aspiring producers understand good practice in media production. With detailed contemporary examples, including Pirates of The Caribbean, Game of Thrones, Love Island and PewDiePie’s "letsplay" videos, Dwyer highlights similarities and differences in the production strategies and styles used for a wide range of media products. The book tracks the evolution of these entertainment formats and the emergence of the media businesses which produce them. Chapters describe the key production practices associated with each format, including single and multi-camera filming, news reporting, three-point lighting and gameplay animation. They also explain the development of the production roles associated with these content forms; directors, producers, reporters, correspondents etc. The book goes on to explain how media businesses have used new technologies and production innovations to reduce costs and increase profits, resulting in dramatic changes to established production practices and roles. By comparing media production across media industries, in the UK and US, and illustrating the links between economic, sociopolitical and cultural influences on production, Understanding Media Production opens up a constructive debate between media practitioners and theorists about key questions of creativity and innovation in production.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The final section considers the political ramifications of information technology for critical societal debates ranging from privacy to intellectual property. The contributors to the book map out how the digital revolution shakes up politics, creating new economic and political winners and losers. In order to do so, they connect theories of political economy to the implications of digital technology for international as well as national markets.Attempts to construct a framework for analyzing the international digital era: one that examines the ability of political actors to innovate and experiment in spite of, or perhaps because of, the constraints posed by digital technology. This book examines the reaction of nations to the dual challenges of globalization and technological change. How do high wage countries stay rich in a global digital economy? "How Revolutionary was the Revolution" constructs a framework for analyzing the international digital era: one that examines the ability of political actors to innovate and experiment in spite of, or perhaps because of, the constraints posed by digital technology. In order to assess the revolutionary nature of the digital era, this book takes four overlapping approaches. First, it examines the reaction of nations, specifically Finland, Japan, and emerging markets, to the dual challenges of globalization and technological change. This section identifies both successful and failed national experiments intended to deal with these dual pressures. Second, it assesses corporate attempts to leverage digital technology to reorganize work. A broad range of issues including off-shoring, open source production systems, and knowledge management are addressed. Third, devoting detailed analysis to the case of mobile telephones, the book offers insights into the political economy of market evolution in the digital era.
