Book excerpt: From its origins in the Cumberland Mountains to its entry into the Ohio, the Kentucky River flows through two areas that have made Kentucky known throughout the world -- the mountains in the eastern part of the state and the Bluegrass in its center. In The Kentucky, Thomas D. Clark paints a rich panorama of history and life along the river, peopled with the famous and infamous, ordinary folk and legendary characters. It is a canvas distinctly emblematic of the American experience. The Kentucky was first published in 1942 as part of the ""Rivers of America"" series and has long been out of pr.

Book excerpt: Throughout the Southern Appalachians the topography of the river basins is so closely related to the economic life of the people that the geographer and geologist, the historian and sociologist find here a meeting round. To all of them, there is offered a vast, unexploited field for intensive investigation. The Kentucky River is in many respects a typical stream of the region. It is of national significance in that the United States Government has expended large sums for its improvement, and must provide for the maintenance of the slack-water system now almost completed.

These business secrets and practices are written in an easy to read story that is engaging and a delight to anyone interested in growing a business. Colonel Sanders chose Pete Harman to go forward with his "secret recipe" and Pete did, eventually acquiring more than 300 franchises. The story chronicles the early days and the tough times when KFC was owned by corporations that didn't understand the food business. There were lawsuits and hard feelings until spin-off, Tricon Global Restaurant Corporation, emerged with a leader, David Novak. After settling all of the lawsuits between the franchisees and Pepsico, David said to Pete, "Now teach me the restaurant business." Pete did. Today Tricon is regarded as a highly successful international business and KFC maintains a restaurant stronghold on every continent in the world.

Book excerpt: Milton's poems invariably depict the decisive instant in a story, a moment of crisis that takes place just before the action undergoes a dramatic change of course. Such instants look backward to a past that is about to be superseded or repudiated and forward, at the same time, to a future that will immediately begin to unfold. Martin Evans identifies this moment of transition as "the Miltonic Moment." This provocative new study focuses primarily on three of Milton's best known early poems: "On the Morning of Christ's Nativity," "A Mask Presented at Ludlow Castle (Comus)," and "Lycidas." These texts share a distinctive perceptual and cognitive structure, which Evans defines as characteristically Miltonic, embracing a single moment that is both ending and beginning. The poems communicate a profound sense of intermediacy because they seem to take place between the boundaries that separate events. The works illuniated here, which also include Samson Agonistes and Paradise Regained, are all about transition from one form to another: from paganism to Christianity, from youthful inexperience to moral maturity, and from pastoral retirement to heroic engagement. This transformation is often ideological as well as historical or biographical. Evans shows that the moment of transition is characteristic of all Milton's poetry, and he proposes a new way of reading one of the seminal writers of the seventeenth century. Evans concludes that the narrative reversals in Milton's poetry suggest his constant attempts to bring about an intellectual revolution that, at a time of religious and political change in England, would transform an age.
