Book Baptismal Ecclesiology and the Order of Christian Funerals

Download or read book Baptismal Ecclesiology and the Order of Christian Funerals written by Stephen S. Wilbricht, csc and published by Liturgy Training Publications. This book was released on 2019-06-14 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout this work, Fr. Stephen S. Wilbricht, csc, emphasizes the link between Baptism and death, assisting Christians in grasping who we are called to be in this life as disciples and who we are promised to become in eternal life as saints. As the author points out the centrality of baptismal identity to the funeral liturgy, he makes apparent that the union established at Baptism continues until all reach Christ. Such an appreciation for life in the Body of Christ will help the community recognize both their responsibilities at the death of a member and the union that remains with that member as all journey to the divine. Wilbricht explores the Church’s theology of Baptism and death, and provides pastoral suggestions that will encourage communities to carry out their commitment to care for the grieving and bury the dead.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of baptism within Christian history, theology, and practice is of the first order. Rooted in Christian Scripture, baptism is initiation into Jesus Christ and the sacramental beginning of engagement with the church, the body of Christ. In recent decades, the relationship between baptismal theology and ecclesiology has changed. Rather than focusing solely on the implications of baptism for individuals, the center of theological conversation has moved increasingly to the nature of baptism as formative of the church. One of the pioneers in exploring this theological issue in the United States has been the Rev. Dr. Louis Weil, who, from the time he helped author the 1979 Book of Common Prayer, has advocated for an approach called "baptismal ecclesiology." In a number of essays since the 1980s, Dr. Weil has encouraged an increasingly ecumenical conversation around this particular approach to ecclesiology. This ecumenical collection of essays by a distinguished and international group of sixteen scholars continues the conversation on liturgy and ecclesiology begun by Fr. Weil.

Book Christian Ritualizing and the Baptismal Process

Download or read book Christian Ritualizing and the Baptismal Process written by Susan Marie Smith and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people, even non-Christians, know that Christians gather for worship once a week, and that they are right there to support each other when there is a baptism or a wedding or a funeral. But what about other poignant, vulnerable, or life-changing times? How does the church help people handle changes that in the past, in Christendom, were considered "secular"? Does the church have a role at retirement when one's ministry changes, or when a family's children leave home and familiar patterns seem to grind to a halt? Is there any rite possible for someone who is called to Christian ministry but not to ordination? Or to someone whose vows are broken in divorce? Christian Ritualizing and the Baptismal Process asserts that baptism marks the beginning of a process of participation in Christ's ministry, so that no part of life can finally be considered secular. Susan Marie Smith shows how every passage, healing, and ministry vocation is "holy," and she lays the groundwork needed for every church to create the rituals necessary to lament and celebrate the endings and beginnings that happen in every Christian life.

Download or read book One Baptism written by Susan K. Wood and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Christians would say that baptism is the one sacrament Christians of all denominations share, that it is the source of ecumenical unity among all Christian churches. But how true is that? Is there really one baptism," as we profess in the Nicene Creed? If we disagree about what baptism does, can we really say that baptism unites us? To address this central question Susan Wood brings together the history and theology of baptism (systematic, sacramental, and liturgical), focusing especially on the divergent paths taken in the understanding of the sacrament since the Reformation. Founded not only in her study of theology but also in her years of participation in ecumenical dialogues, her perspective will illuminate this problem for readers and point the way toward deeper understanding.

Book Rites of Committal for the Order of Christian Funerals

Download or read book Rites of Committal for the Order of Christian Funerals written by English Catholic Bishops Conference and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2005-03-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since liturgical celebration involves the whole person, it requires attentiveness to all that affects the senses. The readings and prayers, psalms and songs should be proclaimed with understanding, conviction and reverence. The ritual gestures, processions and postures should express and foster an attitude of reverence and reflective ness in those taking part in the funeral rites. This Committal rite should be celebrated in an atmosphere of simple beauty, in a setting that encourages participation. Care must be taken that the choice of signs and symbols are in accord with the culture of the people. With these words, this important new publication is introduced. Various texts for committal are printed along with rubrics and including also the rite of committal at a crematorium. This new version of the Rite of Committal now includes the Roman Lectionary relating to Funeral Rites but now excludes the Rite of Committal for children.

Book Baptism and the Unity of the Church

Download or read book Baptism and the Unity of the Church written by Michael Root and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1998 with total page 220 pages. This volume is the first comprehensive study of the meaning of baptism for church unity to be written by an ecumenical group of theologians -- Orthodox, Catholic, Lutheran, Reformed, Anglican, and Baptist. These essays explore such themes as how baptism relates to the communion shared by the churches and the relationship of baptism and church unity as found in the New Testament, in the ecumenical dialogues, and in the liturgies of the churches.
