It has then affirmed, that the salvation of Noah and his house in the ark was intended to foreshadow the salvation of the believer of the present day by baptism. The resemblances between our day and that of Noah may be classed under five heads l. The position of Grod. 2. Of the world. 3. The church. 4. The ark. 5. The Waters. Download or read book Your God is Too Glorious written by Chad Bird and published by New Reformation Publications. This book was released on 2023-11-14 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of us are regular people who have good days and bad days. Our lives are radically ordinary and unexciting. That means they're the kind of lives God gets excited about. While the world worships beauty and power and wealth, God hides his glory in the simple, the mundane, the foolish, working in unawesome people, things, and places. In our day of celebrity worship and online posturing, this is a refreshing, even transformative way of understanding God and our place in his creation. It urges us to treasure a life of simplicity, to love those whom the world passes by, to work for God's glory rather than our own. And it demonstrates that God has always been the Lord of the cross--a Savior who hides his grace in unattractive, inglorious places.Your God Is Too Glorious reminds readers that while a quiet life may look unimpressive to the world, it's the regular, everyday people that God tends to use to do his most important work.

Book Homilies on Isaiah

    Book Details:
  • Author : Origen
  • Publisher : CUA Press

  • ISBN : 0813233739
  • Pages : 165 pages

Download or read book Homilies on Isaiah written by Origen and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hans Urs von Balthasar places Origen of Alexandria “in rank . . . beside Augustine and Thomas” in “importance for the history of Christian thought,” explaining that his “brilliance” has captivated theologians throughout history (Spirit and Fire, 1984, 1). This brilliance shines forth in his nine extant homilies on Isaiah, in which he employs his theology of the Trinity and Christ to exhort his audience to play their crucial role in salvation history. Origen reads Isaiah’s vision of the Lord and two seraphim in Isaiah 6 allegorically as representing the Trinity, and this theme runs throughout the nine homilies. His representation of the seraphim as the Son and Holy Spirit around the throne of the Father brought early accusations that Origen was a proto-Arian subordinationist, followed by a pointed condemnation by Emperor Justinian in 553. These homilies, originally delivered between 245 and 248, are extant only in a fourth-century Latin translation. Though St. Jerome, likely because of these controversies, does not identify himself as the Latin translator, the evidence overwhelmingly points to his pen, and his reliability in conveying Origen’s authentic meaning is well documented. If one sets aside the questionable charges of subordinationism, these homilies, expounding on passages from Judges 6-10, come alive with Origen’s legacy of presenting Christ as the central figure of the soul’s ascent to God. Reading allegorically the two seraphim to be Jesus and the Holy Spirit around the Father’s throne, Origen draws a picture of the Trinity as a tightly knit whole in which the Son and the Holy Spirit eternally sing the Trisagion (“Holy, holy, holy”) to each other and the Father about the divine truths of God’s nature, allowing the part of their song that conveys the “middle things” of salvation history to be heard by creation. The “second seraph” is the Son, or Jesus, who descends holding a hot coal, or Scripture, from the altar of the throne, with which he cleanses Isaiah’s lips, or the believer’s soul. Origen employs his signature exegetical method of allegory and typology through the lens of the threefold meaning of Scripture to emphasize to his hearers that Christ is the deliverer, the content, and the reward of the healing Word. He repeatedly assures them that those who submit to Scripture will enter into salvation history’s cycle of cleansing from sin, growth in virtue, and ever-deepening knowledge of God. As a result, they will become like Christ and thus will be prepared to join the Trinity for all eternity at the heavenly wedding feast.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was saved in a Non-denominational "Christian Church." After being there a few years, in 2006 I began to notice that the Christian Church movement primarily taught that water baptism was a part of how someone is saved. Though the church where I attended didn't believe this, they would fellowship with many who did. This troubled me so much that after speaking with the pastor, I had to find a new church home. Years later I met the woman who would be my wife who was also saved in this movement but who had never studied the issue of baptism. All she ever knew was what her church taught her. This study is the fruit of three months of my wife and I sitting down to work through what the Bible has to say on this subject. Do you know someone who believes that water baptism is a part of being saved or essential to being saved? Do you know someone who has turned this wonderful picturesque act of obedience for the believer into a means of saving grace? Groups that would hold to this view are; The Church of Christ, Roman Catholicism, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) to name a few. How do you respond biblically to the claims of these groups? They all point to God's Word for support but does it really teach that water baptism has an effect on our salvation? In this study we examine the major passages in the debate like 1 Peter 3:21 where we're told, "Baptism now saves you" and John 3:5 where Jesus says we must be "born of water and the Spirit." It also uses the Word of God to answer the questions, "What is the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?" and "Is water baptism a work?" I hope you are blessed by this resource.*All proceeds go to support my wife and I as we are at seminary.

Book The Disobedient Spirits and Christian Baptism

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bo Ivar Reicke (1914-1987) was born and schooled in Stockholm, Sweden. In 1933 he matriculated in the Faculty of Arts of the University of Stockholm, transferring, however, in 1935 to the University of Uppsala, where in 1937 he received his degree in the areas of the history of religions and classical Greek and philosophy. From 1938 he continued his studies in the Faculty of Theology of the same university. Graduating in 1941, he became ordained in December of the same year as a minister of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden. He immediately continued with doctoral studies, choosing the exegesis of the Old and New Testaments as his field of research. In May 1946 he presented in print and publicly defended his dissertation, The Disobedient Spirits and Christian Baptism: A Study of 1 Pet. III.19 and Its Context, [Acta Seminarii Neotestamentici Upsaliensis Edenda Curavit A. Fridrichsen, 13] (Lund 1946). In the official statement to the university, his New Testament teacher, Professor A. Fridrichsen, describes the dissertation as a weighty contribution to the solution of an old exegetical problem and goes on to recommend the author for a position on the Uppsala Faculty. In the following years, Reicke taught New Testament exegesis as assistant professor in his home faculty. In September of 1953 he received the call of the Faculty of Theology of the University of Basel, Switzerland, to fill the chair in New Testament. Moving to Basel with his family, Reicke served there for thirty years until his retirement in 1984. In addition to lecturing around the world and training about forty doctoral students, he was the author of a number of books (see below). Still actively writing and lecturing, Bo Reicke died in Basel in May of 1987.
