Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is believer’s baptism the clear teaching of the New Testament Scriptures? What are the historical and theological challenges to believer’s baptism? What are the practical applications for believer’s baptism today? Volume two in the NEW AMERICAN COMMENTARY STUDIES IN BIBLE & THEOLOGY (NACSBT) series for pastors, advanced Bible students, and other deeply committed laypersons addresses these compelling questions. Indeed, Believer’s Baptism begins with the belief that believer’s baptism (as opposed to infant baptism or other faith proclaiming methods) is the clear teaching of the New Testament. Along the way, the argument is supported by written contributions from Andreas Kostenberger, Robert Stein, Thomas Schreiner, Stephen Wellum, Steve McKinion, Jonathan Rainbow, Shawn Wright, and Mark Dever. Users will find this an excellent extension of the long-respected NEW AMERICAN COMMENTARY.

Book excerpt: In this meticulously referenced text, Dr. McDowell examines how God has progressively revealed himself through his eternal covenant to his people, culminating in Christ and the sending of the Holy Spirit. He helps us understand how baptism is God’s sign and seal of his new covenant with us through Christ and how it relates to our salvation. Viewing the whole Bible in its historical, biblical, and theological context, Dr. McDowell explores baptism from every theological perspective. He takes us through the purpose and meaning of baptism as well as its mode, which clearly exemplifies our purification from sin, in-filling with the Holy Spirit, and union with Christ. “…a penetrating study of baptism that will benefit church leaders and lay people alike. ...Should be widely read and taught in the church.” Dr. Richard L. Pratt, Jr., Third Millennium Ministries, President “…a book you need to read but that will also bring you blessing as you do—no matter how much you already know. This one is solid theologically, challenging us to be biblical on every issue; it is global… it is startlingly pastoral.” Dr. D. Clair Davis, Emeritus Professor of Church History, Westminster Seminary “In this comprehensive book, he applies biblical wisdom—based on a lifetime of personal reflection—to the systematic theology and pastoral practice of Christian baptism….” Dr. Philip G. Book Infant Baptism and the Covenant of Grace

Download or read book Infant Baptism and the Covenant of Grace written by Paul King Jewett and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1978 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a print on demand book and is therefore non- returnable. Paul Jewett, author of the creative and highly provocative book Man As Male and Female, here turns his critical attention to the practice of infant baptism. Jewett does not accept the traditional "covenant" argument for baptizing infants, and this book explains why he believes this argument fails. Infant baptism is not a subject which can be isolated. For, as Jewett would have his readers understand, one's view on this issue is integrally related to one's view of the sacraments in general and thereby to the whole doctrine of the church and salvation. Thus it is understandable that what appears to be a minor theological question has had such divisive effects on the church. A discussion of the historical source of infant baptism begins Jewett's critique and introduces such issues as the distinction between infants and children, the silence of certain early church fathers on the subject, infant communion, and catechetical instruction. The second and major portion of this book examines the theological issue, focusing specifically on the covenant argument, which suggests that baptism replaces circumcision as the sign of the covenant and thereby is given to infants. This argument, Jewett claims, fails to take into account the historical character of revelation, and contains certain contradictions. Jewett concludes with a creative defense of believer baptism, one which is theologically responsible and which recognizes the profound truths of covenant theology.

Book Covenant Holiness and Infant Baptism

Download or read book Covenant Holiness and Infant Baptism written by Thomas Blake and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2013-01-27 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work by Blake is a second treatment on covenant theology that was widely circulated during his time outside of his magnum opus work “The Covenant of God.” This book is a combination of two treatises he wrote, one concerning the covenant holiness of infants under the ordinance of baptism, and a second treatise covering answers to questions surrounding whether there is sufficient ground in scripture to warrant the conscience of a Christian to present his infants to the sacrament of baptism. Both are excellent Scriptural treatments of the subject, with exegesis surrounding passages such as Galatians 2:15, Genesis 17, 1 Corinthians 7, and Ephesians 4:1-3. This is not a scan or facsimile, has been updated in modern English for easy reading and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Download or read book To a Thousand Generations written by Douglas Wilson and published by Canon Press & Book Service. This book was released on 1996-06 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In arguing for biblical infant baptism, it is not sufficient for us to say that infant baptism is merely consistent with the Scriptures, or that a biblical case can be made for it. In order for us to be satisfied that we are being biblical Christians, we must be content with nothing less than a clear biblical case requiring infant baptism. In a doctrinal matter of this importance, the standards of evidence are high.
