Book excerpt: There is an affluent town in Connecticut where America's most dangerous men and women have "retired"--former wetwork operatives now scorned, distrusted, and targeted by the same government that created them. All Paul Bannerman and his people want is to live in peace. But there is no peace in a violent world. A Los Angeles film student stumbled onto something terrible happening behind the walls of Sur La Mer, an insane asylum for movie folk. Now Lisa Benedict has been silenced permanently. But Lisa had people who cared for her, people who know better than to blindly accept the official lies being passed out about her tragic death. She had a sister, Carla: one of Paul Bannerman's most efficient assassins. And Carla wants revenge. Bannerman and his agents have followed one of their own across a continent. And their search for Carla is leading them into the heart of the high-level conspiracy that snuffed out young Lisa's life and now threatens untold others. Bannerman and his team are a long way from home, the hunters and the hunted. But here, as in any urban jungle, the rules remain the same: survival of the fittest, the fastest, the deadliest and most ruthless--Bannerman's law.

Download or read book International Copyright and Access to Knowledge written by Sara Bannerman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-19 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principle of Access to Knowledge (A2K) has become a common reference point for a diverse set of agendas that all hope to realize technological and human potential by making knowledge more accessible. This book is a history of international copyright focused on principles of A2K and their proponents. Whilst debate and discussion so far has covered the perspectives of major western countries, the author's fresh approach to the topic considers emerging countries and NGOs, who have fought for the principles of A2K that are now fundamental to the system. Written in a clear and accessible style, the book connects copyright history to current problems, issues and events.

From critical and theoretical analysis to legal research and citation skills, Canadian Communication Policy and Law encourages deep analytic engagement. Serving as a valuable resource for students who are undertaking research and writing on legal topics for the first time, this comprehensive text is well suited for undergraduate communication and media studies programs.

Book International Human Rights and Islamic Law

Download or read book International Human Rights and Islamic Law written by Mashood A. Baderin and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2003-09-11 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the important question of whether or not international human rights and Islamic law are compatible. It asks whether Muslim States can comply with international human rights law whilst adhering to Islamic law. The traditional arguments on this subject are examined and responded to from both international human rights and Islamic legal perspectives. The volume engages international human rights law in theoretical dialogue with Islamic law, facilitating an evaluation of the human rights policy of modern Muslim States. International Human Rights and Islamic Law formulates a synthesis between these two extremes, and argues that although there are differences of scope and application, there is no fundamental incompatibility between these two bodies of law. Baderin argues that their differences could be better addressed if the concept of human rights were positively established from within the themes of Islamic law, rather than by imposing it upon Islamic law as an alien concept. Each article of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, as well as relevant articles of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women are analysed in the light of Islamic law. The volume concludes that it is possible to harmonise the differences between international human rights law and Islamic law through the adoption of the 'margin of appreciation' doctrine by international human rights treaty bodies and the utilization of the Islamic law doctrines of 'maqâsid al-sharî'ah' (the overall objective of Sharî'ah) and 'maslahah' (welfare) by Muslim States in their interpretation and application of Islamic law respectively. Baderin asserts that Islamic law can serve as an important vehicle for the guarantee and enforcement of international human rights law in the Muslim world, and the volume concludes with recommendations to that effect.

Book The WIPO Internet Treaties at 25

Download or read book The WIPO Internet Treaties at 25 written by R. V. Vaidyanatha Ayyar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explores the WIPO journey so far and looks at how relevant the treaties are in contemporary world after 25 years of their existence. It revisits the WIPO Diplomatic Conference, narrates briefly how the Internet Treaties came into being, describes all the developments germane to the Internet Treaties over the last twenty-five years and examines at length how well these treaties withstood the creative gales of destruction having a bearing on the production, distribution and consumption of digital content. The retrospective consists of two parts. The first part looks back at the conference, its course of events, its negotiation dynamics, the doctrinal differences and sharply conflicting economic interests underlying the stands taken by the main parties to negotiations and the national and transnational interest groups that sought to influence the negotiation process and outcomes. The second part reflects on the outcomes and assesses with the wisdom of hindsight, how appropriate the outcomes were and how well they withstood the passage of time. This second aspect is the main focus of this book. The retrospective is limited to the digital agenda of DipCon; but for the digital agenda, the DipCon is convened so soon and the Internet Treaties concluded so fast. The book provides rich material for researchers studying the WIPO journey and also the practitioners by throwing light on discussions that led to a treaty that has in general withstood the trials of time.
