Bank portfolio weakness can limit the flexibility of interest rate policy, the scope of financial reforms, and the conduct of monetary and fiscal policy. This volume, edited by V. Sundararajan and Tomás J.T. Baliño, is a collection of papers by IMF economists. Book Foreign Bank Participation and Crises in Developing Countries

Download or read book Foreign Bank Participation and Crises in Developing Countries written by Robert J. Cull and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2007 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes the recent trends in foreign bank ownership in developing countries, summarizes the existing evidence on the causes and implications of foreign bank presence, and reexamines the link between banking crises and foreign bank participation. Using data on the share of banking sector assets held by foreign banks in over 100 developing countries during 1995-2002, the results show that countries that experienced a banking crisis tended to have higher levels of foreign bank participation than those that did not. Furthermore, panel regressions indicate that foreign participation increased as a result of crises rather than prior to them. However, post-crisis increases in foreign participation did not coincide with increased credit to the private sector, perhaps because in many cases foreign banks acquired distressed banks.

Book Problems of Economic Growth and Planning The Sudan Example

Download or read book Problems of Economic Growth and Planning The Sudan Example written by H. Güsten and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early 1961, the IFO-Institut fUr Wirtschaftsforschung (Institute for Economic Research) established an "African Studies Centre" to conduct research into the economic and political problems of developing countries, with special reference to African nations south of the Sahara. Its activities are not confined to the field of economics. The emphasis is on inter-disci plinary cooperation and synthesis. Within the framework of the East Afri can Research Programme, which is supported by the Fritz Thyssen Foun dation, agricultural, sociological and legal studies have appeared or are in progress. In the field of economics, problems of economic planning are among the subjects receiving particular attention. Two issues of "Afrika Studien" deal with institutions and instruments of planning: N. AHMAD/ E. BECHER: Entwiddungsbanken und -gesellschaften in Tropisch Afrika (Development Banks and Companies in Tropical Africa), Afrika-Studien No. 1, and: R. GUSTEN/H. HELMSCHROTT: Volkswirtschaftliche Gesamtrech nungen in Tropisch Afrika (National Accounts in Tropical Africa), Afrika Studien No. 3. It is hoped that a comprehensive review of methods and results of economic planning in East Africa will be forthcoming in this series in the course of 1967. The present study was made subsequent to investigations conducted by a research team under my guidance in 1961/62; the author of this study, ROLF GUSTEN, was a member of this team.

Book Public Financial Institutions in Developed Countries Organization and Oversight

Download or read book Public Financial Institutions in Developed Countries Organization and Oversight written by Aditya Narain and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2007-09-01 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While public financial institutions (such as public development banks) are commonly associated with developing countries, in fact they are prevalent in the developed world as well. We study a sample of public financial institutions in industrialized countries and identify dominant trends in their organization and oversight. While practices in developed countries may be a useful reference point, a more nuanced approach, accounting for the disparity of institutional environment, regulatory capacity, and government accountability and effectiveness, may be required in developing countries. Further investment in the accumulation of evidence and formulation of best practices in the organization and oversight of public financial institutions seems warranted and necessary. This paper was prepared while Mr. Ratnovski was working in the Financial Supervision and Regulation Division during January-April 2006. The authors are grateful to Jonathan Fiechter, David Marston, and participants of an MCM seminar in April 2006 for their helpful comments.
