Book Financial Development and Economic Growth in Malaysia

Download or read book Financial Development and Economic Growth in Malaysia written by James B. Ang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-11-25 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the role of financial intermediation in economic development and growth in the context of Malaysia. Using an analytical framework, the author investigates the Malaysian economy from 1960 onwards to examine how far financial development has progressed in the course of economic development, and whether it has been instrumental in promoting economic growth. A significant improvement in the Malaysian financial system, coupled with rapid economic growth and a rich history of financial sector reforms, makes Malaysia an interesting case study for this subject. The author shows that some government interventions seem to have impacted negatively on economic growth, whereas repressionist financial policies such as interest rate controls, high reserve requirements and directed credit programmes seem to have contributed positively to financial development. The analysis concludes that financial development leads to higher output growth via promoting private saving and private investment. Shedding light on the evolutionary role of financial system and the interacting mechanisms between financial development and economic growth, this book will be of interest to those interested in economic and financial development, financial liberalization, saving behaviour and investment analysis and Asian Studies.

Book Financial Liberalization Innovation and the Response of Malaysian Commercial Banks Portfolios to Monetary Shocks

Download or read book Financial Liberalization Innovation and the Response of Malaysian Commercial Banks Portfolios to Monetary Shocks written by Noor Azlan Ghazali and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is shown that banks resort to competitive funds and securities liquidation in their attempt to shield the lending capacity. This is made possible by the recent development in the banking industry. It is argued that the central bank looses some of its direct influence on banks portfolio allocations, thus, reducing the effectiveness of monetary policy. Studying the transmission mechanism of monetary policy therefore requires special attention to the behaviour of banking firms. [Author's Abstract].

Book Market Structure and Performance in the Malaysian Banking Industry

Download or read book Market Structure and Performance in the Malaysian Banking Industry written by M. Nasser Katib and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper has tested the validity of the structure-conduct-performance (SCP) framework in the Malaysian banking market and also the competing efficient structure (ES) hypothesis using robust estimation approach. The empirical investigation uses four different measures of concentration to represent market structure and a market share variable to capture the effect of market power on bank performance. The results of the analysis conducted on a sample of 20 commercial banks over the period from 1989 to 1996 have allowed us to strongly reject the ES hypothesis. The empirical findings suggest that market concentration determines profitability in the Malaysian banking industry. This is consistent with most recent studies that have tested the competing hypotheses in their evaluation of bank performance (Evanoff and Fortier, 1988; Molyneux and Thornton, 1992; Lloyd-Williams et al., 1994; Molyneux and Forbes, 1995).

Book excerpt: This report summarizes the papers and associated discussion presented at the Senior Policy Seminar held in Santiago, Chile between 25th and 28th of May, 1992. The seminar involved ministers, central bank governors and senior officials from several Latin American and Asian economies as well as several representatives of international organizations. The central purpose of the seminar was to comparatively assess the wide range of country experiences with financial reform in the two regions, with a view to distilling general lessons. The materials presented were oriented mainly around the diverse experiences of financial policy formulation and implementation during the 1980s and early 1990s. These materials supported discussion of a variety of subthemes, including the management of financial crises, the interaction of financial liberalization with more general economic reforms, the industrial policy aspects of financial reform, and the roles of governments in stimulating the development of specific types of financial markets and institutions. The presentation during the four days included country papers as well as a variety of more general and synoptic papers included in this publication.

Book East Asia s Financial Systems

Download or read book East Asia s Financial Systems written by Seiichi Masuyama and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 1999 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Financial systems in the East Asian region are commanding worldwide attention. Japan's financial sector, with an ailing banking system in the aftermath of a bubble economy, is undergoing a "Big Bang" deregulation, liberalization, and securitization. At the same time, the rehabilitation of Southeast Asian and Korean economies in the wake of the Asian financial crisis awaits restoration of their banking sectors. The region's bank-dominated and development finance-oriented financial systems are coming into friction with global capital markets that lack adequate architecture. In this volume, researchers from ten East Asian think- tanks analyse the financial systems in their respective economies. They survey the financial sector deregulation and liberalization that took place in the midst of economic booms and they evaluate the role of the financial systems in the region's current economic misfortunes. Together, the pieces in this volume lay the groundwork for understanding how financial systems in East Asia have evolved as the economies have grown more complex and capital markets have globalized, and how these systems must adapt to move beyond today's crisis to serve the region's economies in the future.
