Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1831 edition. Excerpt: ... nearly equal amount of these would be returned upon them, and that the real amount of those in actual circulation should not be estimated at more than fifty-three and a half millions of dollars. We have however adopted throughout the usual mode of computation. If to the amount of notes we add the deposits, we will have a total of either one hundred and eighteen, or one hundred and nine millions, according to each of those two modes of computing, for the circulation of all the banks. This is sustained by a sum of twenty-two millions in specie, which makes no part of the circulation. There are no means of ascertaining correctly the portion which consists of the precious metals. The silver coinage of England forms nearly one-seventh part of the whole circulation of that country. At that rate, that of the United States, allowing for the various considerations which may affect the question, cannot be estimated at more than ten millions. It is well known, that gold has been altogether excluded by the mint regulations. We have therefore the following results, according to the view of the subject, which may be adopted: Gross amount of notes issued, $62,500,000 Silver coins, 10,000,000 Usual mode of computing, 1, .... 72,500,000 And if deposits are included, 55,500,000 2, .... 128,000,000 But if the bank notes of other banks on hand are deducted, the notes in circulation will be-$53,500,000 Silver, 10,000,000 3, 63,500,000 And if deposits are included, 55,500,000 4 119,000,000 Which last appears to us the most correct mode of computation. Although we have freely expressed our opinion, that, taking into consideration all the circumstances which belong to the subject, it might have been preferable in the United States to have had nothing but a.

Book The Rise of Digital Money

Download or read book The Rise of Digital Money written by Mr.Tobias Adrian and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-07-15 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper marks the launch of a new IMF series, Fintech Notes. Building on years of IMF staff work, it will explore pressing topics in the digital economy and be issued periodically. The series will carry work by IMF staff and will seek to provide insight into the intersection of technology and the global economy. The Rise of Digital Money analyses how technology companies are stepping up competition to large banks and credit card companies. Digital forms of money are increasingly in the wallets of consumers as well as in the minds of policymakers. Cash and bank deposits are battling with so-called e-money, electronically stored monetary value denominated in, and pegged to, a currency like the euro or the dollar. This paper identifies the benefits and risks and highlights regulatory issues that are likely to emerge with a broader adoption of stablecoins. The paper also highlights the risks associated with e-money: potential creation of new monopolies; threats to weaker currencies; concerns about consumer protection and financial stability; and the risk of fostering illegal activities, among others.

This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Money and Banking, Vol. 1 Both General Walker and Mr. Jevons differed from many modern economists on the two important subjects of bimetallism and the principle of a banking currency. The chief justification, however, for a new work on the subject of money and banking is not afforded so much by this difference of opinion as by the progress which has taken place in monetary and banking science since their time. Many problems which a generation ago appeared obscure have been solved by the progress of events. Systems of currency have been successfully put in Opera tion which had not then been subjected to the test of experience. It is one of the objects of this work to record the progress thus made. Book The Principles of Money and Banking

Download or read book The Principles of Money and Banking written by Charles A. Conant and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Money and Banking, Vol. 1 When the writing of this book was begun there were only two standard works in English dealing systematically with the subject of money and banking - the work of General Walker on Money, and that of Mr. Jevons on Money and the high order of merit is attested by the fact that they have survived the changes of more than a generation since they were written. Both General Walker and Mr. Jevons differed from many modern economists on the two important subjects of bimetallism and the principle of a banking currency. The chief justification, however, for a new work on the subject of money and banking is not afforded so much by this difference of opinion as by the progress which has taken place in monetary and banking science since their times. Many problems which a generation ago appeared obscure have been solved by the progress of events. Systems of currency have been subjected to the test of experience. It is one of the objects of this work to record the progress thus made. Among the important events which have marked the monetary history of the past generation has been the steady progress towards the gold standard in commercial countries, until to-day other systems have practically been superseded or abandoned in favor of some form of the money based upon gold. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1913 edition. Excerpt: ... CURRENCY, BANKING, AND THE MONEY _ DEGREES TRUST. [jThere is a man-made god that controls the social and industrial system that governs us. We know him as the "Money Trust." He is offended if given or called by his true name, and being jealous of his power, he opposed an investigation of its sources. At the present time he has an almost illimitable influence upon our daily actions and is seeking to increase it by framing new currency and banking laws to suit his purposesT) For that reason our first study will be of the banks and the Money Trust, in order that we may understand their power and the meaning of money. A few of us have bank accounts, but the most of us have none. Some of us borrow from the banks, but most of us do not and cannot. But, we are all concerned with the accounts and the loans, because they affect business, and, consequently, the conditions of us all. In fact, they control the general business with which we are materially concerned, regardless of our occupation and whether we are rich or poor. Bastkebs Pebsonally. Bankers are well-informed and enterprising business men, and are generally good citizens who take a great interest in the welfare of the communities in which they live. They are our acquaintances--the same kind of people that we are, and they generally accommodate and aid us whenever it is possible. That entitles them to a consideration equal to what we expect for ourselves, but they should receive no special favors, and neither should we. They should be under the necessity of responding to the common welfare, and we should be also. But if we were on an equality with them in doing business, we, as well as they, could go on through the journey of life and all would secure better results than even they do now. It...
