Book Bank Consolidation and the Provision of Banking Services

Download or read book Bank Consolidation and the Provision of Banking Services written by Katherine Samolyk and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines how bank small business lending in local markets was related to bank merger activity during the mid-1990s. The authors use deposit data reported at the branch level to impute the distribution of bank small business loans across urban and rural markets; they then study the link between various types of merger activity and the growth of small business lending in the local market. Multivariate tests indicate that bank consolidation is more broadly linked to lower estimated loan growth in rural markets than in urban ones. However, there is also evidence of lower small business loan growth in concentrated urban markets that are experiencing within-market merger activity. And, consistent with bank-level research, bank consolidation mainly involving mergers between smaller banks tends to be associated with greater small business credit availability in local banking markets. Finally, the authors validate their empirical strategy by comparing their geographic loan estimates to geographic loan originations reported since 1996 by larger institutions under the auspices of the Community Reinvestment Act.

Book Bank Consolidation Internationalization and Conglomeration

Download or read book Bank Consolidation Internationalization and Conglomeration written by Mr.Gianni De Nicolo and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper documents global trends in bank activity, consolidation, internationalization, and financial firm conglomeration, and explores the extent to which financial firm risk and systemic risk potential in banking are related to consolidation and conglomeration. We find that while there is a substantial upward trend in conglomeration globally, consolidation and internationalization exhibit uneven patterns across world regions. Trends in consolidation and conglomeration indicate increased risk profiles for large, conglomerate financial firms, and higher levels of systemic risk potential for more concentrated banking systems. We outline research directions aimed at explaining why bank consolidation and conglomeration do not necessarily yield either safer financial firms or more resilient banking systems.

Book On Bank Consolidation in a Currency Union

Download or read book On Bank Consolidation in a Currency Union written by Fabio Di Vittorio and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper focuses on the impact of diversification on bank performance and how consolidation through mergers and acquisitions (M&A) affects the banking sector’s stability in the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU). The paper finds that a lower level of loan portfolio diversification explains higher non-performing loans and earnings volatility of indigenous banks, as compared to foreign competitors in the ECCU. We then simulate bank mergers both within and across ECCU countries by combining individual banks’ balance sheets. The simulation shows that a typical indigenous bank could better diversify against its idiosyncratic risk by merging with other banks across the border. In addition, we point out that M&A, leading to a more asymmetric banking sector, may increase systemic risk.

Book Bank Mergers Acquisitions

Download or read book Bank Mergers Acquisitions written by Yakov Amihud and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the financial services industry becomes increasingly international, the more narrowly defined and historically protected national financial markets become less significant. Consequently, financial institutions must achieve a critical size in order to compete. Bank Mergers & Acquisitions analyses the major issues associated with the large wave of bank mergers and acquisitions in the 1990's. While the effects of these changes have been most pronounced in the commercial banking industry, they also have a profound impact on other financial institutions: insurance firms, investment banks, and institutional investors. Bank Mergers & Acquisitions is divided into three major sections: A general and theoretical background to the topic of bank mergers and acquisitions; the effect of bank mergers on efficiency and shareholders' wealth; and regulatory and legal issues associated with mergers of financial institutions. It brings together contributions from leading scholars and high-level practitioners in economics, finance and law.

Book Bank Consolidation Efficiency and Profitability in Italy

Download or read book Bank Consolidation Efficiency and Profitability in Italy written by Anke Weber and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2017-07-27 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the case for efficiency-driven banking sector consolidation in Italy, evaluates its potential effects on profitability, and discusses policy options to facilitate a consolidation process that is as effective as possible. A bottom-up analysis of 386 Italian banks suggests that while profitability is expected to improve as the economy gradually recovers, operational efficiency gains are nonetheless needed to restore large parts of the banking system to healthy profitability. Banking system consolidation can play a role in facilitating such efficiency gains, but its effectiveness is likely to be most as part of a comprehensive strategy that includes complementary reforms to clean up bank balance sheets. Cross-country experience indicates that efficiency gains are more likely to follow consolidations where careful viability analyses are conducted of the synergies and operational improvements that can be achieved.

Book Bank Consolidation and Performance

Download or read book Bank Consolidation and Performance written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2004-08-01 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We examine a large panel of more than 100 banks from Argentina to study the effects of bank consolidation on performance between December 1995 and December 2000, a period of heavy bank consolidation and relative calm. Overall, we find a positive and significant effect of bank consolidation on bank performance. Bank returns increase with consolidation, and insolvency risk is reduced. Additionally, the study suggests that mergers and privatizations have a beneficial effect on bank returns. The effects of a bank acquisition on return on equity is, however, negative. Acquisitions do not seem to have any effect on risk-adjusted returns. The study also finds that a bank's insolvency risk is reduced significantly through mergers and privatization and is unrelated to bank acquisitions.

Book A Century of Banking Consolidation in Europe

Download or read book A Century of Banking Consolidation in Europe written by Manfred Pohl and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the late nineteenth century to the late twentieth century the European banking sector experienced countless mergers and acquisitions. The outcome of this century of consolidation is strikingly similar across the continent, with the banking sector of each country now dominated by a handful of giant banking corporations. Consolidation and concentration trends in banking was the theme of the Academic Archive Colloquium of the European Association for Banking History held in Madrid in June 1997. This volume is comprised of the 18 papers and responses presented at the Colloquium by a truly international group of delegates. Some of the themes explored in the book include: the significance of mergers for bank archives; the regulation of mergers and their impact on banking legislation; reactions to consolidation from within and without the banking industry; case studies of particular mergers and their impact on the wider banking community. Youssef Cassis's introductory chapter provides a general survey of trends in the consolidation process and suggests that the advent of the Euro may herald a new era in the history of European banking consolidation.

Book Consolidation and Market Structure in Emerging Market Banking Systems

Download or read book Consolidation and Market Structure in Emerging Market Banking Systems written by Gaston Gelos and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2002-11 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the evolution of market structure in emerging market banking systems during the 1990s. While significant bank consolidation has been taking place in these countries, reflected in a sharp decline in the number of banks, this process has not systematically been associated with increased concentration as measured by standard indices. Moreover, econometric estimates based on the Panzar-Rosse (1987) methodology suggest that, overall, markets have not become less competitive in a sample of eight European and Latin American countries. Lowering barriers to entry, by doing such things as allowing increased participation of foreign banks, appears to have prevented a decline in competitive pressures associated with consolidation.

Book Bank Consolidation and Small Business Lending within Local Markets

Download or read book Bank Consolidation and Small Business Lending within Local Markets written by Katherine Samolyk and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper uses the relatively new CRA small business loan data to examine how bank consolidation has been related to small business lending within a bank's local community - particularly to borrowers having more modest economic prospects, such as very small businesses or those located in low- and moderate-income areas. The results of multivariate tests indicate that during the late 1990s, banks experiencing merger activity- including banks that did not themselves merge but were part of active holding companies - had systematically lower small business loan growth than inactive banks. But, the effects appear to reflect a general decline in small business lending rather than a shift away from lending to lower- income areas or to very small businesses. At the local level, merger-related effects are more pronounced when the merger activity increases the local market share of the surviving bank or its parent holding company. Thus, our results indicate that, at least in terms of the quantity of credit, the effects of bank consolidation do not appear to fall disproportionately on the businesses having more modest prospects. On the other hand, the market-level analysis indicates that standard antitrust concerns about the provision of local banking services still seem to apply in small business credit markets.
