Book excerpt: The development of a comprehensive integrated multimodal economic corridor network (CIMECON) is a precondition for sustaining robust economic growth over the long term, hence the continuous efforts to identify the optimal set of economic corridors. Economic corridors are anchored in transport corridors, and international experience suggests that the higher the level of connectivity within and across countries, the higher the level of economic growth.Bangladesh has many options for developing transport-anchored economic corridors. The Government of Bangladesh, the South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation Program, and the Asian Highway planners have produced a list of 16-corridor network, which might be useful, but is rather complex and could not be very functional without any sort of prioritization. In this paper, a new set of corridors for Bangladesh is being proposed: a nine-corridor CIMECON resembling the London Tube map. The nine corridors of CIMECON would satisfy market-integration and linkage criteria, and their development is expected to improve regional connectivity, transit, and integration, as facilitation measures are designed and put in place. The CIMECON is about improving connectivity within Bangladesh and enhancing Bangladesh's role as the land bridge between South Asia and Southeast Asia (via Myanmar) and between South Asia and northern Asia (via the People's Republic of China). For this goal to be realized, the optimal timing of investments in the components of CIMECON will be critical.

Book Structural Transformation of Bangladesh Economy

Download or read book Structural Transformation of Bangladesh Economy written by Mustafa K. Mujeri and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-18 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the theory and global evidence on structural transformation along with stylised facts and implications using, among others, a dynamic panel model, for South Asia. The characteristics of the structural transformation process in Bangladesh bring out the relevance of a comprehensive and inclusive South Asian ‘brand’ in view of the challenges of large population size, high burden of poverty, rising inequalities and its compulsion to achieve rapid and sustained inclusive development. The analysis highlights several distinct characteristics of Bangladesh’s structural transformation including changes in value added, trade, employment, productivity, formal-informal jobs, and opportunities for low-skilled workers. The book suggests that the manufacturing sector could not create the required number of jobs and generate rapid absolute and relative productivity gains in the Bangladesh economy. Although the services sector has largely led output and employment growth, services subsectors with strong labour absorptive capacity have low average productivity. Hence, growth-enhancing structural transformation led by these subsectors is likely to be less dynamic than required for rapid employment-creating growth in the economy. The book’s analysis on COVID-19 and cyclone Amphan shows that an integrated disaster and development paradigm is needed for Bangladesh. An inclusive and health and well-being focused structural transformation presents the pathway to advance the people-centred approach to development in Bangladesh through both vulnerability reduction and investments in sustainable development that would offset both known and unknown disaster threats. The key for Bangladesh is to skillfully manage the ‘developer’s dilemma’ of achieving both structural transformation in terms of large productivity gains and inclusive growth for reducing poverty and rising inequalities. This book is relevant to students, academicians and development practitioners and others interested in contemporary development.

Book Numbers and Narratives in Bangladesh s Economic Development

Download or read book Numbers and Narratives in Bangladesh s Economic Development written by Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on socio-economic developments of Bangladesh by challenging the dominant international narrative of the case being termed a "development surprise", "development paradox" or "development conundrum." In doing so, the book examines the political economic dynamics of the country and offers valuable insights into the current state of the Bangladeshi economy in light of stability, transformability and sustainability. Pointing to the 'high' rate of growth in gross domestic product (GDP) in Bangladesh, there is wide belief that economic growth can be obtained even without functioning institutions, and is more important than an inclusive political system. Advocates go on to argue that authoritarianism may be condoned as long as a steady course of development is perused. However, the inadequacy of comparative analysis on the state of the economy of Bangladesh vis-à-vis other relevant economies makes such claims myopic and parochial. This book thus investigates the numbers and narratives to ascertain the validity of such assertions and lamentations by looking at the necessary and sufficient conditions of development. The necessary conditions imply an incisive inquiry into the factors of economic growth: land, labour, capital and technology. As such, the book explores development by drawing variables of politics and economics to find out a causal relationship to themes such as growth, agriculture, manufacturing industry, financial sector, health, education, poverty and inequality. Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir has worked in diverse constituencies, namely, academia, governments, think-tanks, international organisations and media. He has led numerous projects for diverse organisations including governments, development partners and international organisations at home, and abroad.

Book Review of Configuration of the Greater Mekong Subregion Economic Corridors

Download or read book Review of Configuration of the Greater Mekong Subregion Economic Corridors written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2018-02-01 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic corridor approach was adopted by the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) countries in 1998 to help accelerate subregional development. The development of economic corridors links production, trade, and infrastructure within a specific geographic area. The review of these corridors was conducted to take into account the opening up of Myanmar and ensure that there is a close match between corridor routes and trade flows; GMS capitals and major urban centers are connected to each other; and the corridors are linked with maritime gateways. The review came up with recommendations for possible extension and/or realignment of the corridors, and adoption of a classification system for corridor development. The GMS Ministers endorsed the recommendations of the study at the 21st GMS Ministerial Conference in Thailand in 2016.

Book Scaling New Heights

Download or read book Scaling New Heights written by Sabyasachi Mitra and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2016-05-01 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning more than 800 kilometers of India's eastern coastline, the Vizag–Chennai Industrial Corridor (VCIC) is part of the country's East Coast Economic Corridor. This initiative can help unify the large domestic market as well as integrate the Indian economy with the dynamic global value chains of Asia and drive India's Act East policy. VCIC will also be an important component of the government's Make in India campaign to attract foreign investors and encourage the creation of manufacturing hubs in the country. The new industrial corridor is expected to spur growth by augmenting existing investment in world-class transport networks, infrastructure, and industrial and urban clusters that are supported by a robust institutional framework and a competitive business environment. By linking areas that are lagging in development with dynamic industrial and urban clusters, VCIC will create employment opportunities that alleviate poverty and reduce inequality. As a coastal corridor, VCIC can provide multiple access points to international gateways. Greater connectivity and economic integration between South Asia and the rest of Asia is likely to contribute significantly to development and foster regional cooperation as well.

Book Economic Corridor Development for Inclusive Asian Regional Integration

Download or read book Economic Corridor Development for Inclusive Asian Regional Integration written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question underlying the entirety of this publication is: "How can viable economic corridors be called into existence by dint of government and multilateral support?" The authors answer this question by examining the experience of economic corridor development of different regions from across continents. There are important lessons to be learned for successful corridor development from the experiences of the European Union and South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation regions. In each case, detailed models were constructed to assess the economic impact of corridor investments. What emerged from a consideration of these two cases (as well as broader discussions) was a framework for evidence-based policy analysis. When key policy makers and stakeholders pursue measurable outcomes for the development of regional economic corridors, the model and data framework (at a standard economic scale of relevance) allows for an investment-relevant development of scenarios, which will be monitored within an effective organizational process. Such a process, with all the elements of an evidence-based policy in place, is highly likely to generate successful economic corridor development, which would realize envisaged opportunities within the regions. Two priority regions in Asia, the Greater Mekong Subregion and the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation, face different opportunities.

Book Almaty Bishkek Economic Corridor Tourism Master Plan

Download or read book Almaty Bishkek Economic Corridor Tourism Master Plan written by Asian Development Bank and published by . This book was released on 2019-12 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This tourism master plan provides a framework for developing the Almaty-Bishkek Economic Corridor (ABEC) into an international-quality destination. In Central West Asia, the area between Almaty in Kazakhstan and Bishkek in the Kyrgyz Republic is home to exceptional heritage and a wealth of cultural and natural assets. The tourism potential is immense, but remains largely untapped. This plan identifies key tourism investment priorities such as developing ski resorts along the mountain range between Almaty and Issyk-Kul and linking these winter sport facilities with summer tourism opportunities. It also proposes transport infrastructure improvements, including enhancing Almaty International Airport as the major gateway to the region.
