Book excerpt: They are what I am and I am what they are We both bow down to different God's in the morning and at night Our tatoos tell different stories Both proud of what we should be ashamed of They bring out the worst in me and I in them All these things accumulate and become the enemy It comes from what we have and who we are Every one is a soldier for what they believe in You have be careful that you don't go off on the deep end of a philosophy or doctrine You can get out there and get lost and never make it back Between the truth and reality is a place called common sense and balance In the grip of pride everything you say and do is right.

Download or read book Short Plays written by George Bernard Shaw and published by Standard Ebooks. This book was released on 2023-12-21T21:32:19Z with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irish writer George Bernard Shaw began his career as a novelist. But he is most remembered as one of the greatest English-language playwrights of the modern era. Shaw’s best-known plays are his long-form, evening-length works like Man and Superman. But over his long career, he also wrote many shorter works. This edition collects Shaw’s short English-language plays published between 1901 and 1927. There are historical works like “The Dark Lady of the Sonnets,” which imagines a meeting between William Shakespeare and Queen Elizabeth I, and “Great Catherine,” set in Imperial Russia. There are short farces like “How He Lied to Her Husband” and “The Fascinating Foundling,” and political pieces like “Press Cuttings” and “Augustus Does His Bit.” Then, too, there are serious works like the heartwrenching “The Showing Up of Blanco Posnet” and the existential drama “The Glimpse of Reality.” Where Shaw wrote prefaces to these shorter plays, they are also included here. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: 'These highbrows must remember that there is a demand for little things as well as for big things'George Bernard Shaw was one of the leading playwrights and public intellectuals of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. He helped propel drama towards the unexpected, into a realm where it might shock audiences into new viewpoints and into fresh understandings of society. Throughout his longwriting career Shaw wrote short plays, ranging in length from 1000-word puppet play, Shakes Versus Shav, to the 12,000-word suffragette comedy, Press Cuttings. These plays can be taken to illuminate Shaw's life and legacy, from ideas about war and patriotism in O'Flaherty, V.C. to censorship in TheShewing up of Blanco Posset.Surveying Shaw's entire career of writing short dramas, focusing especially on those years when his work in the form was particularly prolific (around 1909 and during the First World War), this collection places Shaw's short plays broadly into four key areas: farces, historical sketches, war dramas, and Shakespearean shorts. For each of these areas, the volume explores Shaw's aesthetic and thematic concerns, the precise historical and generic contexts in which the works were written, the major criticism and scholarship that has subsequently emerged, and the most notable stage and screenproductions. This collection reveals how a playwright often criticized for being too wordy was actually a master of the short form.
Download or read book Prison Puzzle Pieces written by Dave Basham and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PRISON PUZZLE PIECES (the first of a three volume series) is a non-fiction account of a corrections officer working in Stillwater Prison in Minnesota after he stopped traveling the country performing standup comedy and improv. Through examples, explanations and experiences, he explains how the entire system works, piece by piece, by presenting hundreds of events that occurred in that dysfunctional little city contained within those walls and razor ribbon. His unique perspectives earned him the respect of inmates and officers; on the other hand his life was in constant danger from other inmates and officers for him doing his job ethically. All of this is presented from the author’s unique perspective. It contains some historic background and events pertaining to that prison; such as the infamous Younger Brothers. There is no way to explain every aspect of this restricted society, but these books come close. Many of the things that go on in the prison that have life and death consequences and are shocking can also have a very humorous side. Background on the officer is given to help you to understand how he made his decisions, whether you agree with them or not. Officers are gradually educated through strange and bizarre experiences on the job that can’t be imagined. Letters from the inmates to the officer give insight to their various states of mind. You will learn of the different areas of the prison such as visiting, shakedown, dining hall, cell blocks, segregation, etc., how it all works and what goes on there that can be inspiring or downright disgusting. Many strange relationship dynamics exist like the officers best mentor being a convicted mass murderer, inmates that break their code and have his back, the institutions most feared inmate becoming his friend, corrupt officers harassing him and deliberately placing him in dangerous situations, and inmate relationships of all sorts. Nothing is embellished. Nothing need be embellished.
