Book excerpt: Sandra Boynton and Michael Ford—the team behind Rhinoceros Tap, the Grammy-nominated #1 New York Times bestseller Philadelphia Chickens, and other toe-tapping book-and-CD sets—bring great words, great music, great performers to children and vintage children alike. Put a nickel in the jukebox, assuming you can locate a jukebox, and that you remember what a nickel is. Here's legendary Beach Boy Brian Wilson singing lead and 10-part harmonies on "Speed Turtle." The incomparable Neil Sedaka crooning "Your Nose." B. B. King brings you a wistful "One Shoe Blues," Gerry and the Pacemakers offer "Mersey Lullaby," and Broadway great Patti LuPone sings—what else—the "Rabbit Tango." And then there's the hit single from Boynton's Your Personal Penguin sung by the impossibly cute Davy Jones of The Monkees. I mean jeepers, even Sha Na Na is here. And OH! The book! Boynton has filled it with all things 50s and 60s. And, well, golly, it’s so happy and colorful and just terrific, Mister! Grab your saddle shoes, plunk two straws into that swell chocolate malt, and let's twist again like we did last century. 119,000 copies in print.

Download or read book My Chimp Friday written by Hester Mundis and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-10-04 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rachel can't imagine why Bucky Greene, a scientist friend of her father's who's developing genetically engineered bananas, would show up at their New York City apartment in the middle of the night to leave a baby chimpanzee with them for a week -- or why they absolutely, positively can't tell anyone about it. What could possibly be "top secret" about an adorable chimp like Friday? Rachel hasn't a clue, but when Friday turns out to be really, inexplicably intelligent (Rubik's Cube's a snap) -- and Bucky Greene turns up really, inexplicably dead (he slipped on his own banana peel) -- she suspects serious monkey business afoot. And when chimp-nappers step into the picture, getting to the bottom of Friday's "top secret" before it's too late becomes a delightfully madcap mystery -- with Rachel in a riotous, nonstop race for survival of the fittest. Written by four-time Emmy-nominated writer and acclaimed humorist Hester Mundis, who raised a chimp of her own in her Manhattan apartment, this is a wonderfully funny -- and heartfelt -- novel about endangered species, corporate espionage, and going bananas in more ways than one.

Book excerpt: “Sassy, funny, and proper is my nana, Elizabeth Rose. But she can break wind like a sailor—deadly, loud or silent, wherever she goes!” The author, Sandy Pina, has incorporated a humorous spin on an otherwise sad, serious, and sometimes odious subject. Nana Toot is two stories intertwined. It’s about a seventy-ish senior who was married to her high school sweetheart for more than fifty years when he suddenly passed away. She must find purpose again when she thinks there is none. With the support of her family; her doxie, Jimmy Dean; and her besties—Judy and Marcy Lou, whom she met at Get Your Giddy Up—Senior Center, she embraces life again. Even though Nana Toot is fit for her age, she is stressed over her malfunctioning sphincter valve! When that happens, you’re in for a “fart storm” of funny problems and challenges. Nana Toot is about how she accepts what she cannot change and discreetly toots her way through out her day, breaking wind again and again!

Book Banana Ball

Download or read book Banana Ball written by Jesse Cole and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2023-05-16 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Savannah Bananas have peeled back the game of baseball and made it fun again. This is their story. For his entire childhood, Jesse Cole dreamed of pitching in the Majors. Now, he has a life in baseball that he could have only imagined: he met the love of his life in the industry; they shaped Savannah, Georgia’s professional team into the league champion Savannah Bananas; and now the Bananas have restyled baseball itself into something all their own: Banana Ball. Fast, fun, and outrageously entertaining, Banana Ball brings fans right into the game. The Bananas throw out a first banana rather than a ball. Their first-base coach dances to "Thriller" or Britney between innings. Players run into the crowd to hand out roses. And the rules themselves are bananas: if a fan catches a foul ball it’s an out; and players might go to bat on stilts or wearing a banana costume. And their fans absolutely love it. But the reason this team is on the forefront of a movement is less about the play on the field and more about the atmosphere that the team culture creates. For the first time in this book, Jesse reveals the ideas and experiences that allowed him to reimagine America’s oldest sport by creating a phenomenon that is helping fans fall in love with the game all over again. This is a story that’s bigger than baseball and bigger than the yellow tuxedo Jesse wears as the “ringmaster” of every game. And to understand the movement, you have to understand the story at its core. In Jesse’s telling, it takes heart, innovation, and joy (and a bit of tropical fruit) to make something wholly original out of one of America’s great traditions. His story is part Moneyball, part Field of Dreams, part The Greatest Showman. It is a personal story, a creativity story, and the story of a business scrapping for every success. And it has several distinct love stories—love stories like Jesse and his father, Jesse and his wife, the team and the sport of baseball, the team and the fans. This is Jesse calling his dad from the outfield after each Bananas game, and putting unending creativity into a team with the ultimate goal of bringing the Bananas to the professional ballparks he himself never got to play in. This is his story of baseball, love, leadership, and going just a bit bananas for all.

  • Author : John Soluri
  • Publisher : University of Texas Press
  • Release : 2009-03-06
  • ISBN : 0292777876

Download or read book Banana Cultures written by John Soluri and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2009-03-06 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bananas, the most frequently consumed fresh fruit in the United States, have been linked to Miss Chiquita and Carmen Miranda, "banana republics," and Banana Republic clothing stores—everything from exotic kitsch, to Third World dictatorships, to middle-class fashion. But how did the rise in banana consumption in the United States affect the banana-growing regions of Central America? In this lively, interdisciplinary study, John Soluri integrates agroecology, anthropology, political economy, and history to trace the symbiotic growth of the export banana industry in Honduras and the consumer mass market in the United States. Beginning in the 1870s when bananas first appeared in the U.S. marketplace, Soluri examines the tensions between the small-scale growers, who dominated the trade in the early years, and the shippers. He then shows how rising demand led to changes in production that resulted in the formation of major agribusinesses, spawned international migrations, and transformed great swaths of the Honduran environment into monocultures susceptible to plant disease epidemics that in turn changed Central American livelihoods. Soluri also looks at labor practices and workers' lives, changing gender roles on the banana plantations, the effects of pesticides on the Honduran environment and people, and the mass marketing of bananas to consumers in the United States. His multifaceted account of a century of banana production and consumption adds an important chapter to the history of Honduras, as well as to the larger history of globalization and its effects on rural peoples, local economies, and biodiversity.
