Book Bamboo Promise

Download or read book Bamboo Promise written by Vicheara Houn and published by Abbott Press. This book was released on 2012-11-20 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: http://jsaaea.coehd.utsa.edu/index.php/JSAAEA/article/view/186/175 Cambodia is a country with beautiful temples and art, and steeped in the Buddhist religion. Despite this, the once-civilized society turned to violence and proceeded to destroy itself. People betrayed their parents, their children, and their friends. In the process, they extinguished everything that represented the truth and beauty of Cambodia. How does an individual withstand such experiences and resume life after having fought for a single grain of rice and witnessed unbelievable cruelties, such as mothers crushing their babies, young children willing to kill for a morsel of food, and the entire decimation of normal urban life? Bamboo Promise is author Vicheara Houns story of her survival. This is the remarkable and intensely personal autobiography of a woman raised as the sheltered and privileged only child of a prominent Cambodian family. As a young bride, she and her entire family were swept up in the Cambodian genocide of the 1970s. Houn recounts how she adapted and survived in the harsh killing fields of the Khmer Rouge terrorists in this compelling narrative. Although the author survived many horrors, Bamboo Promise is not a horror story. It is the story of the evolution of a human spirit as she endured a tumultuous upbringing and an unspeakable tragedy. The insights into life after Pol Pots defeat and Cambodias subjection by the Communist Vietnamese are particularly unique. Bamboo Promise is also a story of hope, as Houn found lasting happiness in the United States.

Book excerpt: This is the autobiography of a woman who grew up as the sheltered and privileged only child of a wealthy, prominent Cambodian family. In her young life, she was oblivious of the impoverished lives of the underclass in Cambodia, and of the politics and world events that were sweeping her and her country toward one of the great catastrophes of the 20th century. The rich Cambodian culture and all the competing Western influences are vividly displayed in her descriptions of her life with her father as he tries to mold her into a highly educated and independent woman who still exemplifies all the virtues of the idealized, traditional Cambodian woman. The political tides that enveloped Southeast Asia in the 1970s began to become real to Vicheara when her fathers responsibilities in the Lon Nol government caused him to personally negotiate with a group of Khmer Rouge insurgents, including inviting them to a dinner at his home. On April 17, 1975, Pol Pot - the monstrous leader of the communist guerrilla organization transformed Cambodia, the country of his birth, into a Prison Without Walls. This was one week before the fall of Saigon, Vietnam. This extreme form of radical communism eliminated religion, culture, currency, personal property, hospitals, schools, the banking system, and every other vestige of modern urban life. They committed class genocide against Cambodians educated urban citizens through starvation, execution, and forced labor. Nearly half the population of Cambodia died in the four years that followed, many in the Killing Fields, and as Toul Sleng Prison, the slaughterhouse in Phnom-Penh. When Vicheara, near death from starvation, staggered out of the Pol Pot Time in 1979, she was alone, an orphan, a stranger in a world forever changed. The Cambodia of her childhood was gone as were most of her family and friends. Her journey through horror, privation and humiliation finally led her to the United States in 1984.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Songs of the Bamboo does not only record Vietnamese historical events but also reproduces folk tales and comic stories. My book is a rehabilitation of the present vicissitudes. Wasn't the 9/11 event a coup of terror and a clash between civilizations? In order to cure it, instead of being at war against each other, I would like to present my civilization of the bamboo, which would imply that we are only different in order to be one, since all of us look for human perfection and life happiness. My presentation of the bamboo civilization might not be complete, since now that I am away from my country, I can only rely on my memory. Bamboo is valued for its intrepidity. It cannot be broken by the most blustering wind. Therefore, the bamboo incarnates the virtue of the "royal man" (quan tu), or the chivalrous man so idealized by the Vietnamese civilization that it can often be called the civilization of the bamboo. Thus, our bamboo sings, followed by the wind as a humming accompaniment. Its songs present a variety of historical events and country folklore, with legends I am trying to reproduce as ricochets on the surface of an unknown pond. Xuan-Lan Nguyen was a professor of English at the Universities of Saigon and Hue in Vietnam. She now teaches English courses at Montgomery College in Maryland. Her earlier three books describe the struggles of the Vietnamese people under communist rule, with mass imprisonment, state confiscation of people's properties by expelling them from their homes, and sending them to live and work in wild forests and on the coastline. Book Democracy s Promise

Download or read book Democracy s Promise written by Janelle Wong and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2008-12-18 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the massive demographic changes in the United States during the past few decades, understanding the place of immigrants in the public sphere has never been more critical. Democracy's Promise examines both the challenges and opportunities posed to American civic institutions by the presence of increasing numbers of immigrants. Author Janelle Wong argues that the low levels of political participation among contemporary immigrants are not due to apathy or preoccupation with their homeland, but to the inability of American political parties and advocacy organizations to mobilize immigrant voters. Wong's rich study of Chinese and Mexican immigrants in New York and Los Angeles complements traditional studies of political behavior and civic institutions while offering a nuanced examination of immigrants' political activity. Democracy's Promise will appeal to a broad spectrum of social scientists and ethnic studies scholars who study or teach immigration, racial and ethnic politics, political participation, civic engagement, and American political institutions. In addition, it will appeal to community organizers and party activists who are interested in issues of race and ethnicity, immigration, political participation, and political mobilization. Janelle Wong is Assistant Professor of Political Science and American Studies and Ethnicity at the University of Southern California. "As political parties (perhaps) decline in the United States, as civic organizations (perhaps) move away from direct participatory politics, and as the number of immigrants certainly increases--what will link new Americans to the political realm? Janelle Wong answers this important question clearly, with elegance, nuance, rich description, and galvanizing provocativeness. Her evidence is compelling and her sense of urgency about the need for parties to look beyond short-term interests even more so." --Jennifer L. Hochschild, Harvard University "Wong draws on the Latino and Asian immigrant experience, with specific examples from the Chinese and Mexican communities of New York and Los Angeles, to show how the political parties have largely failed to organize these groups and why labor unions and immigrant advocacy organizations have stepped in to take their place. Far from 'disuniting' America, she clearly shows that bringing these groups into the political fray is central to the project of renewing American democracy." --John Mollenkopf, CUNY Graduate Center "A scathing critique of the role of parties in the mobilization of new immigrants and an invaluable analysis of alternative pathways of mobilization through community organizations." --Michael Jones-Correa, Cornell University "By employing multiple empirical methods, including in-depth interviews and sophisticated survey analyses, Janelle Wong provides a compelling account of the political activities and allegiances of America's Asian and Latino immigrants that challenges much conventional wisdom. Often the political parties are failing to reach out to these groups, and often immigrants remain concerned about their home countries; but they are nonetheless increasingly active in American politics, in ways that may do much to shape the course of American political development in the 21st century. Democracy's Promise is a major contribution to our understanding of this crucial dimension of American politics." --Rogers M. Smith, University of Pennsylvania "Democracy's Promise challenges political parties to reexamine their priorities for mobilizing new voters, and identifies the critical role civic institutions play in invigorating participation among immigrant citizens. Wong's analysis is at once precise and expansive; illuminating the contours of Latino and Asian American political incorporation and provoking thoughtful debate on inclusion in democratic theory." --Jane Junn, Rutgers University
