Book Interpreting Motion

Download or read book Interpreting Motion written by Inderjeet Mani and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-02-16 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpreting Motion presents an integrated perspective on how language structures constrain concepts of motion and how the world shapes the way motion is linguistically expressed. Natural language allows for efficient communication of elaborate descriptions of movement without requiring a precise specification of the motion. Interpreting Motion is the first book to analyze the semantics of motion expressions in terms of the formalisms of qualitative spatial reasoning. It shows how motion descriptions in language are mapped to trajectories of moving entities based on qualitative spatio-temporal relationships. The authors provide an extensive discussion of prior research on spatial prepositions and motion verbs, devoting chapters to the compositional semantics of motion sentences, the formal representations needed for computers to reason qualitatively about time, space, and motion, and the methodology for annotating corpora with linguistic information in order to train computer programs to reproduce the annotation. The applications they illustrate include route navigation, the mapping of travel narratives, question-answering, image and video tagging, and graphical rendering of scenes from textual descriptions. The book is written accessibly for a broad scientific audience of linguists, cognitive scientists, computer scientists, and those working in fields such as artificial intelligence and geographic information systems.

Book The Blackpool Streamlined Trams

Download or read book The Blackpool Streamlined Trams written by Peter Waller and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2020-12-30 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “What a variety are pictured here! Double deck ‘balloon’ cars, single deckers including open topped cars and various illuminated cars, a specialty of the town.” —York Model Engineers newsletter In the early 1930s the tramcar in Blackpool was at a crossroads; the system needed investment in both new track and new trams while there was a serious threat that the “town” routes might be converted to bus operation. The appointment of Walter Luff as the new general manager was, however, to prove a turning point. Working closely with English Electric, based in nearby Preston, Luff developed a series of streamlined trams—both single-deck and double-deck—that were to revolutionize the town’s tramway. By the end of 1930s, the corporation had acquired more than 100 new trams—the majority built by English Electric but with twenty coming from Brush—that ensured the survival not only of the key route along the Promenade to Fleetwood but also of the bulk of the “town” routes. Over the next seventy years these trams were to form the cornerstone of the Blackpool system. It was only with the modernization of the system in the first decade of the 20th century that, finally, they became largely obsolete but still, as part of the heritage fleet, they remain very much part of the contemporary Blackpool scene. This book examines the history of Blackpool’s streamlined trams of the 1930s from development through to preservation. “An important addition to the more straightforward business and picture book histories of the Blackpool tram network which local historians and industrial archaeologists will find of great value aiding future studies of this subject.” —Transactions of the Lancashire and Cheshire Antiquarian Society

Book The 13 1 2 Lives of Captain Blue Bear

Download or read book The 13 1 2 Lives of Captain Blue Bear written by Walter Moers and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2006-08-29 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From an author who is “equal parts J.K. Rowling, Douglas Adams, and Shel Silverstein,” the zany illustrated adventures of a sea-faring blue bear. —The Washington Post Captain Bluebear is a bear with blue fur, a creature as unique as the fantastic adventures he undergoes. Unlike cats, which have only nine lives, bluebears have twenty-seven. This is fortunate, because our hero is forever avoiding disaster by a paw's breadth. In this remarkable book, Captain Bluebear tells the story of his first thirteen-and-a-half lives spent on the mysterious continent of Zamonia, where intelligence is an infectious disease and water flows uphill, where headless giants roam deserts made of sugar, and where only Captain Bluebear's courage and ingenuity enable him to escape the dangers that lie in wait for him around every corner. In company with our indomitable hero, we enter a land of imaginative lunacy and supreme adventure, wicked satire and epic fantasy, all mixed together, turned on its head, and lavishly illustrated by the author. Praise for Walter Moers: “Sheer craziness . . . very amusing.” —Daily Telegraph “Moers's great strength, as evidenced by the multitude of characters he presents, is his creativity. Less a text and more an imagination on paper.” —Philadelphia Enquirer “Moers’ creative mind is like J.K. Rowling on ecstasy.” —Detroit News
