Book excerpt: The purpose of this glossary is to facilitate a common language within the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization (BMDO) and the ballistic missile defense community. This glossary supplements other existing Department of Defense (DoD) publications. This glossary is not an official DoD publication; it is limited to terminology that relates to ballistic missile defense. A number of computer, software, and engineering terms are included, especially those applicable to BMD. In addition, numerous acquisition terms are included in light of BMDO's ongoing transition to a more acquisition oriented agency. Many entries are taken from the DoD 5000-series of directives, the DoD program objective memorandums, the Joint Staff Glossary (Joint Pub 1-02), and the Defense Systems Management College Glossary. A number of outdated or seldom-used terms are also included for historical relevance, though obsolete terms are denoted. (MM).

Book Ballistic Missile Defense

Download or read book Ballistic Missile Defense written by Ashton B. Carter and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defense against nuclear attack—so natural and seemingly so compelling a goal—has provoked debate for at least twenty years. Ballistic missle defense systems, formerly called antiballistic missile systems, offer the prospect of remedying both superpowers' alarming vulnerability to nuclear weapons by technological rather than political means. But whether ballistic missile defenses can be made to work and whether it is wise to build them remain controversial. The U.S.-Soviet Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty of 1972 restricts testing and deployment of ballistic missile defenses but has not prohibited more than a decade of research and development on both sides. As exotic new proposals are put forward for space-based directed-energy systems, questions about the effectiveness and wisdom of missile defense have again become central to the national debate on defense policy. This study, jointly sponsored by the Brookings Institution and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, examines the strategic, technological, and political issues raised by ballistic missile defense. Eight contributors take an analytical approach to their areas of expertise, which include the relationship of missile defense to nuclear strategy, the nature and potential applications of current and future technologies, the views on missile defense in the Soviet Union and among the smaller nuclear powers, the meaning of the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty for today's technology, and the present role and historical legacy of ballistic missile defense in the context of East-West relations. The volume editors give a comprehensive introduction to this wide range of subjects and an assessment of future prospects. In the final chapter, nine knowledgeable observers offer their varied personal views on the ballistic missile defense question.

Download or read book The Missile Defense Equation written by Peter J. Mantle and published by AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics). This book was released on 2004 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter J. Mantle, a former U.S. Navy program manager and Pentagon insider, has written this book to help decision makers sort out the costs and technical merits of competing missile defense technologies now in development or under research. Officials in the various missile defense communities tend to make claims of missile defense performance and technical risks using community specific terms and units of measure that make it difficult to compare one system to another. Mantle unravels this trend by translating competing measures into a common standard, and common treatment. He explores the history of missile defense and standardizes the confusing world of missile-defense terminology. He devotes a chapter to defining life-cycle costs, trends in budgets, and the actual costs of the sub systems and components of land, sea, air, and space systems. The book is targeted not just to executive decision makers, but also anyone in the missile-defense decision chain, from Pentagon procurement officers to members of Congress to engineering managers in industry and academia. The book is organized into chapters that discuss the specific criteria decision makers should use when evaluating missile-defense hardware--including both technical factors (performance, cost, schedule, and risk) as well as programmatic and political factors.
