Book Some Notes on Marko Kraljevic Prince Marko

Download or read book Some Notes on Marko Kraljevic Prince Marko written by Vladislav Boskovic and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2009-07-03 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2007 in the subject History - Asia, grade: keine, , language: English, abstract: Kraljević Marko is the epic name of King Marko Mrnjavčević. The word 'Kraljević' means “the young king” or “the king’s son" in English. Marko was the regional king of a small principality in present-day Macedonia. As a Turkish vassal, he had to serve Bāyezid I Yildirim, the ‘Thunderbolt,’ in various military campaigns and he paid regular dues in tribute. It is widely accepted that King Marko accompanied Sultan Bāyezid in the campaign against a much smaller Wallachian army led by Voivode Mircea cel Bătrân and that he was killed at the battle of Rovine while fighting on the side of the Ottomans, a historical fact hardly likely to win him recognition and high regard from his fellow countrymen. That is to say, although he did not feel in duty bound to die in a battle against the Ottomans as his ‘mates’ did at the battle of Kosovo plain in 1389, people praised this petty lord as the greatest national hero ever and rewarded him with immortal epic songs throughout the five centuries of Ottoman rule and ever since. It is a psychological puzzle which has stirred historians and literary critics alike to investigate the matter till the present day.

Book Songs Legends of Kraljevic Marko

Download or read book Songs Legends of Kraljevic Marko written by Stefan Cvetkovic and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kraljevic Marko is the greatest hero of the Serbian and South Slavic lands. The songs and tales which speak of his adventures and fame are full of mythological themes connecting us to the most primordial times of our existence, in the depths of our ancestral cult. The aim of the book is to present these songs in their essence, by purifying them from the historical and religious layers. As such, their symbolism becomes clear and inseparable from the core of the ancient European traditions, which is the ancestral cult and therefore, the reincarnation within the kin and the enlightenment of the mind.

Book Archaeology and the Homeric Epic

Download or read book Archaeology and the Homeric Epic written by Susan Sherratt and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2016-11-30 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between the Homeric epics and archaeology has long suffered mixed fortunes, swinging between 'fundamentalist' attempts to use archaeology in order to demonstrate the essential historicity of the epics and their background, and outright rejection of the idea that archaeology is capable of contributing anything at all to our understanding and appreciation of the epics. Archaeology and the Homeric Epic concentrates less on historicity in favor of exploring a variety of other, perhaps sometimes more oblique, ways in which we can use a multidisciplinary approach – archaeology, philology, anthropology and social history – to help offer insights into the epics, the contexts of their possibly prolonged creation, aspects of their 'prehistory', and what they may have stood for at various times in their long oral and written history. The effects of the Homeric epics on the history and popular reception of archaeology, especially in the particular context of modern Germany, is also a theme that is explored here. Contributors explore a variety of issues including the relationships between visual and verbal imagery, the social contexts of epic (or sub-epic) creation or re-creation, the roles of bards and their relationships to different types of patrons and audiences, the construction and uses of 'history' as traceable through both epic and archaeology and the relationship between 'prehistoric' (oral) and 'historical' (recorded in writing) periods. Throughout, the emphasis is on context and its relevance to the creation, transmission, re-creation and manipulation of epic in the present (or near-present) as well as in the ancient Greek past.
