Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ballad Stories Our ballads, however, are in the main the productions of individual singers, working on older material, and influenced by the tradition of older models. These singers were poets of the people, who cared only for the song itself, who did not seek for posthumous glory, and who have left no name. In some instances a professional minstrel may have been the poet. In Some instances he may have taken the matter of his story from some medieval'romance, and Condensed it into a ballad. Again, in some instances, the story may have been a fragment of contemporary or recent history, and the persons of the narrative may have been the actual persons of history. But history repeats itself, and history sometimes bears a resemblance to romance or fictitious narrative. With an alteration of names, and a slight recasting of incidents, it would sometimes have been easy to adapt an older theme to contemporary events, and heighten the interest of traditional romance with the interest of historical actuality. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ballad We are, then, to picture such a community, and picture it clearly, for we shall have much to do with it in considering the origin of folk poetry. We must sweep our thoughts clear of all conventional ideas, and of all acquaintance with trivial fond records. We must continually test our state of mind by confronting ourselves, for example, with such a question as What is a word We must emancipate ourselves from the literate habit of at once visualising a written or printed word, which is of course only a con ventional sign for the vocalised symbol of a thought. Obviously, the thought comes first in chronological order: but we are not dealing with the days before speech: next comes the sounded, spoken word mox daturus pro geniem vitiosiorem _the word expressed by ideogram, hieroglyph, or writing. It is the middle stage of these three which we have to imagine. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Ballad Book Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Ballad BookIn an old scrap-book Mr Sharpe had been in the habit of pasting the stray notes on ballads and letters relating to them which he received from time to time from Sir Walter Scott. It was Mr Laing's wish that these scraps should be made public, as an illustration of the intercourse that went on between the two collectors. AS none of Scott's letters are dated, there has been considerable difficulty in determining the time when they were written; and all that can be said with cer tainty is, that they fall within the years from 1813 to when Sharpe Settled in Edinburgh, and 182 3, the year when the 'ballad Book' was issued.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Bundle of Ballads Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Bundle of Ballads Classic Reprint written by Ruth Manning-Sanders and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-21 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Bundle of Ballads People in those far-off days liked stories just as much as people do now; and because they had few books or none, and for the most part could not read, they delighted in the visits of the minstrels, who roamed the country from one great lord's house to another, singing their stories and accompanying themselves on the harp. The stories the minstrels sang were On familiar themes; stories of well-known battles, of historic raids and captures and daring rescues, of the deeds of bold outlaws, of gallant lovers, and of that mysterious realm of magic that hung like a shimmer ing mist behind all the busy doings of mankind. Of these old ballads no one can say when any particular one was composed, or who was the author of it. One minstrel, hearing the song from another, would take a fancy to it and sing it again, inventing his own lines when his memory failed him, adding new verses according to his fancy, and perhaps giving the story a slightly different twist to suit his audience. Book Ballad Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ballad Book Classic Reprint written by Katharine Lee Bates and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ballad Book What Shakespeare knew, and Scott loved, and Mac Donald echoes, can hardly be beneath the admiration of high school and university students. Rugged language, broken metres, absurd plots, dubious morals, are power less to destroy the vital beauty that underlies all these. There is a philosophical propriety, too, in beginning poetic study with ballad lore, for the ballad is the germ of all poem varieties. From it are successively developed the epic, lyric, and drama. This volume attempts to present such a selection from the old ballads as shall represent them fairly in their three main classes, - those derived from superstition, whether fairy-lore, witch-lore, ghost-lore, or demon-lore; those derived from tradition, Scotch and English; and those derived from romance and from domestic life in general. The Scottish ballads, because of their far superior poetic value, are found here in greater number than the English. The notes state in each case what version has been followed.
