Book Ballad for Jimmy Ray

Download or read book Ballad for Jimmy Ray written by Mary Elizabeth Burgess and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fictionalized account of the author's only sibling, born crippled and with soft bones, many fractures and illnesses cause Rebekah to become her brother's nurse, as Mama has to work because Papa died when the children were young. Jimmy Ray disdained going to doctors and hospitals after failed surgeries to correct his deformities and never told Mama how ill he was one summer with a high fever and sore throat. Rheumatic fever left him with a heart murmur discovered years later. When he marries sickly Betty Lou and has a son, he assumes the burdens of housework and baby care. He has worked in the refrigeration room of a dairy for 25 years before it closes, causing his heart to enlarge. Freezing temperatures plus rheumatic fever contributes to severe mitral valve prolapse. Realizing his chances are slim, he consents to surgery even though his white blood count is extremely low. The siblings reminisce about their childhood, but when Jimmy goes into cardiac arrest, Becks knows she can't tell him Mama had a stroke and died, nor what really happened in the schoolyard forty years ago. After Jimmy dies, while she is visiting his tombstone following a church service, she realizes he would have forgiven her years ago. Now she must forgive herself.

Book excerpt: As the lead singer of the Doors, Jim Morrison’s searing poetic vision and voracious appetite for sexual, spiritual, and psychedelic experience inflamed the spirit and psyche of a generation. Since his mysterious death in 1971, millions more fans from a new generation have embraced his legacy, as layers of myth have gathered to enshroud the life, career, and true character of the man who was James Douglas Morrison. In Jim Morrison, critically acclaimed journalist Stephen Davis, author of Hammer of the Gods, unmasks Morrison’s constructed personas of the Lizard King and Mr. Mojo Risin’ to reveal a man of fierce intelligence whose own destructive tendencies both fueled his creative ambitions and brought about his downfall. Gathered from dozens of original interviews and investigations of Morrison’s personal journals, Davis has assembled a vivid portrait of a misunderstood genius, tracing the arc of Morrison’s life from his troubled youth to his international stardom, when his drug and alcohol binges, tumultuous sexual affairs, and fractious personal relationships reached a frenzied peak. For the first time, Davis is able to reconstruct Morrison’s last days in Paris to solve one of the greatest mysteries in music history in a shocking final chapter. Compelling and harrowing, intimate and revelatory, Jim Morrison is the definitive biography of the rock idol in snakeskin and leather who defined the 1960s.

Jake Russell sought only a roof over his head and a warm bed. He never expected it to be her roof…or her bed. But Sarah had a hold on him, and he couldn't turn his back on her. His cousin Graham is missing, leaving behind a cranky girlfriend and a cryptic message but little else. Teaming up with a vivacious park ranger named Lauren, Ray deciphers Graham's message and follows it to a variety of Jackson Hole landmarks. Each is somehow tied to a century-old contract, a power struggle between two of the area's prominent families, and a cult-like belief rooted in the valley's mystical aura. The more they learn, the more questions Ray and Lauren have-and the more they fear the worst about Graham. Set against the panorama of the Teton Mountains, Broken Trust explores the lust for power, the relationship between the mystic and the divine, and the depths of loyalty and friendship . . . and ends with a bang!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions by Joshua Coleman, Christine Hand Jones, Kevin C. Neece, Charlotte Pence, George Plasketes, Jeffrey Scholes, Jeff Sellars, Toby Thompson, and Jude Warne After performing with Ronnie Hawkins as the Hawks (1957–1964), The Band (Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel, Robbie Robertson, and Levon Helm) eventually rose to fame in the sixties as backing musicians for Bob Dylan. This collaboration with Dylan presented the group with a chance to expand musically and strike out on their own. The Band’s fusion of rock, country, soul, and blues music—all tinged with a southern flavor and musical adventurousness—created a unique soundscape. The combined use of multiple instruments, complex song structures, and poetic lyrics required attentive listening and a sophisticated interpretive framework. It is no surprise, then, that they soon grew to be one of the biggest bands of their era. In Rags and Bones: An Exploration of The Band, scholars and musicians take a broad, multidisciplinary approach to The Band and their music, allowing for examination through sociological, historical, political, religious, technological, cultural, and philosophical means. Each contributor approaches The Band from their field of interest, offering a wide range of investigations into The Band’s music and influence. Commercially successful and critically lauded, The Band created a paradoxically mythic and hauntingly realistic lyrical landscape for their songs—and their musicianship enlarged this detailed landscape. This collection offers a rounded examination, allowing the multifaceted music and work of The Band to be appreciated by audiences old and new.
