Book Remembering International Terrorist Attacks A Case Study of the Bali Bombings

Download or read book Remembering International Terrorist Attacks A Case Study of the Bali Bombings written by Angela Kuhnert and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-09-06 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2014 in the subject Sociology - Social System and Social Structure, grade: 1,7, Humboldt-University of Berlin (Institut für Asien- und Afrikawissenschaften), course: Memory Making and Heritage in Southeast Asia, language: English, abstract: Worldwide numerous terrorist attacks have shattered societies. In recent time, especially those generating a sense of the West versus the Muslim world, gained large public attention such as the attacks of the World Trade Center in New York City in 2001 and the bombings of Madrid in 2004 and London in 2005. Attacks, such as these, have not only happened on ‘Western ground’, but also Indonesia has been a victim of several terrorist attacks mainly targeting sites predominantly visited by Westerners, such as the hotel bombings in Jakarta in 2009 and the Bali Bombings in 2002 and 2005. The initiator of these terrorist attacks was the Islamic group Jemaah Islamiah with its spiritual leader Abu Bakar Bashir (West, 2008). This organization strives for an introduction of Shariah law in Muslim nations and perceives the Islamic faith to be oppressed by increasing influence of Western values in the Islamic World (West, 2008). Jemaah Islamiah, thus, justifies its attacks as defending the religion of Islam and its values from the perceived thread of the Western influence. Large attacks such as these in Indonesia lead to a large media attention, especially the random and high number of foreign victims lead to worldwide attention (Blakesley, 2007; Crenshaw, 2000; Turk, 2004). Therefore following definition of terrorism by Gibbs (in Turk, 2004, p. 284) will be used in this paper: Terrorism is threatening, perhaps illegal, clandestine (avoiding conventional warfare) violence against human or nonhuman objects that is intended to change or maintain some belief, law, institution, or other social "norm" by inculcating fear in persons other than the immediate targets. Gibbs, therefore, considers an attempt for social control as a possible base for explanatory theory (Turk, 2004). Johnson (1994 in Crenshaw, 2000, p. 415) states how the loss of order and control leads to an exaggeration of the likelihood of such an attack. Destabilizing society by shattering its moral values is used to put forward a political message. “’Memory is the meaning we attach to experience, not simply recall of events and emotions of that experience' (Stern, 2004 in Barbara, 2009, p. 83); and is thus necessary to make sense of the present; it provides a time and space reference and is therefore also crucial in order to build the future” (Barbera, 2009, p. 76). Halbwachs distinguishes between autobiographical memory which is the memory of our firsthand experience, historical memory which is gained thr

In 2002 Australia was rocked by the terrorist bombings in Bali that killed 202 people, including 88 Australians. Then, only 3 years later, another bombing in Bali claimed the lives of a further 20 people and injured 100 others. Who was behind the bombings and how could they be stopped? In Defeating Terror, former Australian Federal Police agent David Craig draws on his first-hand involvement to tell the true story of the hunt for the Bali bombers.

Craig takes us behind the front-line fight, exposing the strengths, fears and vulnerabilities of both sides as they painstakingly piece together the backgrounds of the terrorists, their radicalisation and their bomb-making abilities and methods of evasion.

Defeating Terror is a fast-paced and riveting account of the hunt for the masterminds behind the Bali bombings. In a real-life wild-west shoot out, when the terrorists are finally cornered, thousands of bullets are exchanged and 11 bombs are thrown at police.
The terrorist mastermind is killed, but is his organisation dead?

DAVID CRAIG was a senior officer in the Australian Federal Police. He has trained with international forces including the FBI and served in various countries including Indonesia, East Timor and Afghanistan.

Download or read book Indonesia written by John Bresnan and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2005 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia is in the midst of an epic transition as it moves from decades of authoritarian government to a new era of democratic opening, from years of secular government to a time of struggle over the role of Islam in public life, and from the breakdown of a 'miracle' economy to a search for resilience in the face of global forces. In this timely work, leading scholars analyze the causes of the social, political, and economic crises that erupted in Indonesia in the late 1990s, the responses of the elite and civil society, and the prospects for continuing reform. In the process, they explore such issues as the relevance of the nation-state in an age of globalization, the role of Islam in politics and violence, the strengths and weaknesses of a negotiated route to democratic governance, the relationship of corruption and structural reform to economic growth, and the prospects for stability in Southeast Asia. The first book to grapple with the scale and complexity of this historic transition, this work offers a clear and compelling introduction to the Indonesian experience for students with an interest in the problems of post-colonial states, to scholars in comparative Asian studies, and to anyone seeking a serious yet accessible introduction to the world's largest Islamic democracy. Book Terrorism Trauma and Psychology

Download or read book Terrorism Trauma and Psychology written by Gwen Brookes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive insight into the multilayered effects experienced by directly affected victims and their indirectly affected family members following terrorist incidents and other world disasters. Chapters draw primarily on interviews with fifty victims of the Bali bombings, but also consider terrorist incidents including the London and Boston bombings, and disasters such as the Boxing Day tsunami and the Fukusima nuclear disaster. The book provides a detailed exploration of experiences and perceptions of those involved in the traumatic events, as well as their families, emergency response teams and community volunteers. Chapters discuss community responses to major incidents, appropriate non-medical models of intervention and vulnerable groups that may require special attention. The findings and analysis presented contribute to our understanding of the multilayered effects of terrorism on victims of all levels, and the importance of a planned and informed response, which includes the local community and its wealth of pre-existing resources. Terrorism, Trauma and Psychology: A multilevel victim perspective of the Bali bombing will be key reading for researchers and academics in the fields of social and clinical psychology, as well as scholars of victimology and terrorism studies.

Book Who Did this to Our Bali

Download or read book Who Did this to Our Bali written by Dewi Anggraeni and published by ISBS. This book was released on 2003 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 12 October 2002, Bali seemed to crumble overnight, when hundreds of tourists and locals who were enjoying themselves became victims of two horrific bomb blasts. The bombs took the lives of 202 people -- 88 of whom were Australians, and severely injured many more. The Bali bombing brought Australians closer to the terror which has dominated world headlines for over a year. This book presents a comprehensive summary of the event, the investigation and the main perpetrators. Dewi's work as an Indonesian journalist in Australia puts her in a unique position to observe and understand how the tragedy of the Bali bombing has played out in Australia, Bali and elsewhere in Indonesia. Indonesians and foreign observers alike have been pondering whether 'Indonesian Islam' remains as moderate, liberal and tolerant as many had believed. Part of this book is about Dewi's own journey through this pondering. Includes: Map of Eastern Indonesia; Plan of Kuta, showing Sari Club and Paddy's Bar; four colour plates of Kuta and the main perpetrators of the bombing.

Book Network Governance in Response to Acts of Terrorism

Download or read book Network Governance in Response to Acts of Terrorism written by Naim Kapucu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-12 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High performance during catastrophic terrorist events require the ability to assess and adapt capacity rapidly, restore or enhance disrupted or inadequate communications, utilize flexible decision making swiftly, and expand coordination and trust between multiple emergency and crisis response agencies. These requirements are superimposed on conventional administrative systems that rely on relatively rigid plans, decision protocols, and formal relationships that assume smooth sailing and uninterrupted communications and coordination. Network Governance in Response to Acts of Terrorism focuses on the inter-organizational performance and coordinated response to recent terrorist incidents across different national, legal, and cultural contexts in New York, Bali, Istanbul, Madrid, London, and Mumbai. Effortlessly combining each case study with content analyses of news reports from local and national newspapers, situation reports from government emergency/crisis management agencies, and, interviews with public managers, community leaders, and nonprofit executives involved in response operations, Naim Kapucu presents an overview of how different countries tackle emergencies by employing various collaborative decision-making processes, thus, offering a global perspective with different approaches. These features make this book an important read for both scholars and practitioners eager to reconcile existing decision-making theories with practice.

Book Tourism Development and Terrorism in Bali

Download or read book Tourism Development and Terrorism in Bali written by Michael Hitchcock and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-01-06 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates tourism as a form of globalization within the context of the island of Bali, which has been voted the world's top island destination for the third time running by American travellers. The volume covers the onset of the Asian Crisis, the largest stock-market crash since the Great Depression. The authors chart the turbulence that has afflicted the island at a time of market uncertainty and global political strife and analyze the responses of Bali's business and community leaders to the crises that have buffeted the island since the fall of Suharto. In particular, the book analyzes crisis management with regard to the Bali Bombings, the impact of the bombings on the tourism development cycle and investigates the motives of the bombers. The authors argue that the actions of the bombers can best be understood with regard to the rise of political Islam as a global issue and the book breaks new ground with an analysis of the bombers' global experiences. The book also examines home-grown resistance to certain aspects of globalization, notably the attempt to turn Besakih, the island's mother temple, into a World Heritage Site and top tourist destination.
