Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ronald Grigor Suny examines the Revolution in Baku, important provincial capital and oil center of the Russian empire. His study of Baku's national and class conflicts, Bolshevism as it developed in the city, and the failure of the Commune in 1918 amends our picture of the Revolution as the work of a highly conspiratorial party, seizing power by force and imposing its will on a reluctant population by terror. Book The Bolsheviks and Britain during the Russian Revolution and Civil War 1917 24

Download or read book The Bolsheviks and Britain during the Russian Revolution and Civil War 1917 24 written by Evgeny Sergeev and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-06-16 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the principal aspects of the relations between Soviet Russia (USSR) and Britain in the crucial phase of their formation, namely the period from 1917 to 1924. Using previously unavailable and largely unknown archival records and memoirs published by statesmen, diplomats and military commanders directly involved in the events, Evgeny Sergeev not only reconstructs the dynamics of the interaction between Moscow and London, but also strips its key episodes of common myths and stereotypes. The most debatable issues, to which this study draws its primary attention, include Britain's role in the Entente armed intervention against the Bolshevik regime as well as a series of reciprocate attempts to avoid political controversies, and London's contribution to humanitarian aid and the economic recovery of post-revolutionary Russia. Special consideration is also given to the impact of British diplomacy on the recognition of the USSR by other great powers like France, Italy, and Japan in the mid-1920s.

Book The Formation of the Soviet Union

Download or read book The Formation of the Soviet Union written by Richard Pipes and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1997-04-25 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the history of the disintegration of the Russian Empire, and the emergence, on its ruins, of a multinational Communist state. In this revealing account, Richard Pipes tells how the Communists exploited the new nationalism of the peoples of the Ukraine, Belorussia, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and the Volga-Ural area--first to seize power and then to expand into the borderlands. The Formation of the Soviet Union acquires special relevance in the post-Soviet era, when the ethnic groups described in the book once again reclaimed their independence, this time apparently for good. In a 1996 Preface to the Revised Edition, Pipes suggests how material recently released from the Russian archives might supplement his account.

Book Muslim National Communism in the Soviet Union

Download or read book Muslim National Communism in the Soviet Union written by Alexandre A. Bennigsen and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1980-09-15 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, Bennigsen and Wimbush trace the development of the doctrine of national communism in Central Asia and the Caucasus. At the heart of this doctrine—as elaborated by the Volga Tatar, Mir-Said Sultan Galiev—was the concept of "proletarian nations," as opposed to the traditional notion of a working class. With such ideological innovations, Sultan Galiev and his contemporaries were able to reconcile Marxist nationalisms and Islam and devise an "Eastern strategy" whereby the national revolution was to be spread. The authors show that the ideas of Muslim national communism persist in the land of their birth and have spread to such developing societies as China, Algeria, and Indonesia. This doctrine is an important factor in the ideological split and increasing tensions between industrial and nonindustrial nations, East and West, and now North and South, which grip the world communist movement.

Book REALITIES OF AZERBAIJAN 1917 1920

Download or read book REALITIES OF AZERBAIJAN 1917 1920 written by ANAR ISGENDERLI and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-03-22 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a useful book on an understudied and important subject. Yet much of the narrative reads like a personal diatribe bracketed by national polemics. The author clearly has an ax to grind with the Armenian population of the South Caucasus and his tone does far more to distract the reader from the content of his story than to promote his thesis. For example: "Resettled in the South Caucasus in the mid-nineteenth century, Armenians brought carnage, ethnic and religious discrimination, and hatred. Today, they continue to maintain this policy." Such wildly broad and unsupported hyperboles will mislead the lay reader and vex the expert.
