Download or read book Badges and Insignia of the New Zealand Army written by Geoffrey P. Oldham and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the ultimate guide to New Zealand Army and Police Badges - now reprinted as an updated edition and a very desirable publication and a must for any army badge collector. This book is the most concise and complete attempt at listing and classifying all the badges used in New Zealand and overseas. It includes badges from the early New Zealand Maori Land Wars, through the Volunteers period, extensively covers the multitudinous official and unofficial insignia worn by the Reinforcements Battalions of the Great War through the Second World War, Malayan Emergency, Korean War, Vietnam War, various UN international deployments of Peacekeepers, and goes right through to present day (2011) which saw many of our remaining military corps and regiments combined, so that today the range and diversity of these fascinating badges has been greatly reduced. This is an update of the 1997-published New Zealand Army Badge Reference and price guide by Geoff Oldham (New Zealand's leading Militaria dealer/author).

Book The New Zealand Expeditionary Force in World War II

Download or read book The New Zealand Expeditionary Force in World War II written by Wayne Stack and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-20 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1939 more than 140,000 New Zealanders enlisted to fight overseas during World War II. Of these, 104,000 served in the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Initially thrown into the doomed campaign to halt the German blitzkrieg on Greece and Crete (1941), the division was rebuilt under the leadership of MajGen Sir Bernard Freyberg, and became the elite corps within Montgomery's Eighth Army in the desert. After playing a vital role in the victory at El Alamein (1942) the 'Kiwis' were the vanguard of the pursuit to Tunisia. In 1943–45 the division was heavily engaged in the Italian mountains, especially at Cassino (1944); it ended the war in Trieste. Meanwhile, a smaller NZ force supported US forces against the Japanese in the Solomons and New Guinea (1942–44). Fully illustrated with specially commissioned colour plates, this is the story of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force's vital contribution to Allied victory in World War II.

Download or read book The New Zealand Expeditionary Force in World War I written by Wayne Stack and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10-20 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Zealand Expeditionary Force earned an elite reputation on the Western Front In World War I, and the New Zealanders' war effort was a defining moment in their national history. The statistics are astonishing: of the total population of New Zealand of 1 million, no fewer than 100,000 men enlisted, and of those, 18,000 were killed and 58,000 wounded. In other words, 15 percent of the male population of New Zealand became casualties. Famously, the NZEF was first committed at Gallipoli in 1915, but NZ cavalry regiments also helped defend Egypt and fought in Palestine with Allenby's famous Desert Mounted Corps. On the Western Front the Kiwis were called the 'Silent Division' for their fieldcraft and their uncomplaining professionalism. This book is both a tribute and a history of the contribution made by a small nation.

Book Allied Special Forces Insignia 1939 1948

Download or read book Allied Special Forces Insignia 1939 1948 written by Peter Taylor and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2013-05-20 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As early as 1940 political leaders and military commanders responsible for the conduct of the Allied operations relalised that, after a string of disastrous setbacks, national morale could only be restored by taking offensive action against the enemy. With the limited resources available Churchills stirring call to set Europe ablaze called for unconventional solutions and action. From these uncertain beginnings was born a plethora of Allied Special Force units. Inevitably some are household names but others are little known, having had brief and covert existences in far flung parts of the world.rnrnAll, however, had distinctive identities and their proudly worn insignia represent a fascinating and often elusive challenge for militaria collectors. This is due, not just to the scarcity of items in many cases, but to the mystery of their origin; a number of these units were established on an ad hoc and spontaneous basis.Peter Taylors aim in compiling Allied Special Forces Insignia 1939–1948 is to fill a gap in the growing bibliography of militaria collecting. At the same time, Brigadier Bryan Watkins introduction sets in context the growth and development of Allied Special Forces during the global conflict 1939-45.Lavishly illustrated, this work will prove an essential reference work and companion guide for the expert collector and all interested in military history.

Download or read book Behind the Lines written by Michael F. Dilley and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2013-09-30 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The array of new technologies that came on the scene in the early 20th century resulted in widely varied new forms of military special operations once civilization embarked on its greatest war. Suddenly, fighting men could be delivered by parachute, submarine, glider, jeeps, and fast amphibious craft deep into enemy territory to perform special tasks; yet others would continue to perform missions the same as their ancestors in previous wars—on foot using stealth, endurance and patience. This work contains discussions of the employment of various special purpose, special mission organizations during World War II. These units operated in Allied and Axis countries and in various theaters of war including Europe, North Africa, the Pacific, Asia, and the continental United States. Representing every major combatant, the operations include various kinds of raids, intelligence gathering missions, support to partisan/guerrilla groups, prisoner rescues, direct-action missions, and at least two where the object was simply to steal something. Some missions would have been officially denied if the operations had been caught in the act. The book is divided into two sections: Behind Enemy Lines and Behind Friendly Lines, to demonstrate that special-purpose organizations can be employed wherever needed, even in areas controlled by military units of their own or allied countries. Many of the units described run the gamut of special mission types, from commando to parachute units, reconnaissance to sabotage units, and partisan training units as well as those with combined missions. Many of the operations described in this book continue to serve as templates for modern Special Operations missions, while still others—the first attempts of their kind—continue to serve as examples of what not to try under the circumstances. Michael F. Dilley served for 20 years in the U.S. Army’s Military Intelligence branch. After retiring from the Army, the author served for about ten years as an employee of the Department of Defense, then as a contractor for various U.S. Government agencies in several fields for 15 years. Author of several books and many articles, a number of these chapters are based on his previous writings for the legendary Behind the Lines magazine.
