This book was released on 2018-03-11 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Bacteriology and Pathology for Nurses For ages the leper had been considered unclean, and Since the dawn of the world of man had plague infested cities been shunned, and, later, those who were afflicted and their habitations were purified by baths and smudges and noxious fumes. Then an Observing Dutchman of an inventive turn, Leeuwenhoek, of Delft, about the year 1680 produced a lens of such power that this enemy Of man could be seen, though it was not recognized as such at that time. Though Leeuwenhoek certainly discovered the existence Of bacteria and described them, neither he nor any one else succeeded in connecting them with disease for nearly two centuries. So for two hundred years, though its presence was known and its guilt Ofttimes suspected, the disease germ remained unconvicted. Oliver Wendell Holmes, an American physician author, in 1843 suspected the cause Of puerperal fever and wrote on -its contagiousness. In reply to the criticism and invectives which were heaped upon him because he ventured SO new and astonishing an idea in medicine he wrote: It is as a lesson rather than a reproach that I call up the memory Of these irreparable errors and wrongs. Book Principles of Bacteriology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Bacteriology Classic Reprint written by Arthur Alexander Eisenberg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Bacteriology We begin to realize that it is while studying bacteriol ogy that the rationale and the principles of bacterial prophylaxis are first brought to the nurse's attention, yet but very little information of this nature is usually given and but very little stress is laid on the connection between bacteriology and prophylaxis; it seemed to me that this would be a very appropriate place and a very opportune time to drive home the lessons, and for this reason, I have introduced in each chapter dealing with individual microorganisms, a section - Mode of Infection, Disinfection and Prophylaxis - as regards the disease caused by particular microorganisms, giv ing explicit instructions as regards the patient and those who mingle with him, including the nurse, the room and its contents. With the present need for more and more nurses, both here and over there, a demand for nurses capa ble of serving as laboratory assistants and technicians will be felt, and for this reason I have gone into the minute description of the simpler technical procedures, giving complete and detailed directions, taking nothing for granted and leaving nothing to one 's imagination. For this reason I have laid much stress on cultural diagnosis giving much prominence to the several culture media used for the differentiation of the various mem bers of the typhoid-colon-dysentery group. In each chap ter a section is provided on Bacteriologic Diagnosis, under which all tests called for in connection with the particular disease are enumerated and complete technic is given, usually describing but one method - the one which has proved most serviceable in my hands. The basis of this book is the lecture notes that I have used during the last eight years in teaching the nurses of the Samaritan Hospital Training School. In incorporating them into 1 book form I have endeavored to present clearly and in simple language that portion of the subject essential for the nurse to know. A few blank pages have been inserted at the end of each chapter for the convenience of the student in adding useful notes from time to time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Bacteriology A Manual of Bacteriology, therefore, which fairly represents the present state of knowledge, will consist largely of a statement of facts established by experimental data, and cannot fail to be of value to physicians and to advanced students of bacteriology as a work of reference. The present volume is an attempt to supply such a man ual, and at the same time a text-book of bacteriology for students and guide for laboratory work. That portion Of the book which is printed in large type will, it is hoped, be found to give an accurate and sufficiently extended account of the most important pathogenic bacteria, and of bacteriological technology, to serve as a text-book for medical students and others interested in this department Of science. The descriptions of non-pathogenic bacteria, and of the less important or imperfectly described species of pathogenic bacteria, are given in smaller type. For the benefit of students of medicine and others who do not care especially for the detailed descriptions Of non-pathogenic bacteria and the extensive bibliography contained in the Manual, this text-book OF bacteriology is now published. It comprises that portion of the Manual above referred to as printed in large type, revised to in clude all important additions to our knowledge of the pathogenic bacteria since the original date Of publication. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bacteriology for Nurses In arranging these chapters on bacteriology for the use of pupil nurses, no attempt has been made to do more than to endeavor to bring the essentials of an enormous subject into a practical arrangement, which will serve to introduce young nurses to one of the most important phases of nursing; viz., the prevention of infection. The suggested schedule for laboratory work was compiled from several outlines which are in use in different schools for nurses, the courses varying from five exercises of one hour each, to twenty exercises of two hours each; one seemingly inadequate and the other requiring more time than is feasible in the majority of schools. This work should not be attempted in the classroom, but should be done in a well-equipped laboratory under the direction of a bacteriologist. The class work may easily be done by the nurse teachers, but they should not attempt the laboratory exercises except after extended bacteriological work.
