Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present preliminary results for the emission of target rapidity protons in minimum bias and central 11.7 A. GeV/c Au+Au collisions. The data span the pseudo-rapidity range {vert_bar}[eta]{vert_bar} d"0.76 and proton kinetic energy range of 50 d"E d"200 MeV. The slopes of the kinetic energy spectra and dN/d[eta] values for central and minimum bias collisions are strikingly similar. Comparison of the results to results for Si+Au and p+A shows that the shape of the dN/d[eta] distribution is independent of the reaction system or centrality suggesting that the spectator matter does not play a decisive role in determining the shape of the proton distributions at back angles for these systems at AGS energies.

Book excerpt: The highest net baryon density possible in the laboratory--up to ten times normal nuclear density--is expected in the central region of collisions of heavy nuclei (A ≈ 200) at energies near 10 GeV per nucleon. The transverse energy (E{sub T}) distribution, as well as yields of identified particles (?, K+ and protons), from 197Au + 197Au at 11.64A GeV/c are presented. Two key observations are a large degree of proton s̀̀topping, ̀̀indicating multiple scatterings of the incident nucleons, and a proportional relationship of the pion production to the number of participating nucleons. Strangeness enhancement, a proposed signature of the quark-gluon plasma, is studied via the K+/?+ ratio, which achieves the value of 21% without a strong centrality dependence. Comparisons to similar data taken with a 14.6A GeV/c beam of 28Si are made.
