Download or read book Community Programs to Promote Youth Development written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-02-12 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After-school programs, scout groups, community service activities, religious youth groups, and other community-based activities have long been thought to play a key role in the lives of adolescents. But what do we know about the role of such programs for today's adolescents? How can we ensure that programs are designed to successfully meet young people's developmental needs and help them become healthy, happy, and productive adults? Community Programs to Promote Youth Development explores these questions, focusing on essential elements of adolescent well-being and healthy development. It offers recommendations for policy, practice, and research to ensure that programs are well designed to meet young people's developmental needs. The book also discusses the features of programs that can contribute to a successful transition from adolescence to adulthood. It examines what we know about the current landscape of youth development programs for America's youth, as well as how these programs are meeting their diverse needs. Recognizing the importance of adolescence as a period of transition to adulthood, Community Programs to Promote Youth Development offers authoritative guidance to policy makers, practitioners, researchers, and other key stakeholders on the role of youth development programs to promote the healthy development and well-being of the nation's youth.

Book Trends in Youth Development

Download or read book Trends in Youth Development written by Peter L. Benson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MOVING THE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT MESSAGE: TURNING A VAGUE IDEA INTO A MORAL IMPERATIVE Peter L. Benson and Karen Pittman THE CONTAGION OF AN IDEA In the past fifteen years, countless programs, agencies, funding initiatives, profes sionals, and volunteers have embraced the term "youth development. " Linked more by shared passion than by formal membership or credentials, these people and places have contributed to a wave of energy and activity not unlike that of a social movement, with a multitude of people "on the ground" connecting to a set of ideas that give sustenance, support, and value to increasingly innovative efforts to build competent, successful, and healthy youth. There are several particularly interesting dimensions to this movement. First, the youth development idea has the potential to draw people and organizations to gether across many sectors. Conferences and initiatives using youth development language attract increasingly eclectic audiences, bringing together national youth organizations, schools, city, county, and state agencies, police and juvenile jus tice workers, clergy, and committed citizens. Perhaps embedded in the youth de velopment idea is a philosophy or a "way" that has created an intellectual and/or spiritual home for actors across many settings. However this happens, it is clear that one of the powerful social consequences of the youth development idea is a connecting of the dots-the weaving within and across city, county, state, and of a tapestry of new relationships.

Book MCEETYA National Youth Development Strategy

Download or read book MCEETYA National Youth Development Strategy written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April 1999, the Australian Ministerial Council on Education, Employment, Training, and Youth Affairs established a subgroup to develop a national youth development strategy. Youth development is about helping young people make the transition to happy, productive, and successful adulthood through the guided provision of opportunities to try new things, to learn skills, to ease the school-to-work transition, and to grow as individuals and as members of the community. Interest in a national youth development strategy arose from several successful community-based cadet-style programs in some Australian states and territories. Youth development encompasses a broad range of activities, but the focus of the subgroup is on traditional military-style cadet programs, which provide training in specific skills, opportunities to develop personal characteristics and talents, and opportunities to provide community service in a structured environment. The Australian Commonwealth will provide leadership in the development of community-based youth development programs that will build on existing successful initiatives; share information on best practice through newsletters and conferences; promote a sense of national cohesion for youth development while acknowledging local variations; develop core training units for which participants will receive accreditation upon completion; seek corporate sponsorship; and organize national and state forums. From these cadet-style programs, a broader range of youth development activities could grow. (TD)

Book A Hidden History of Youth Development in South Africa

Download or read book A Hidden History of Youth Development in South Africa written by Margaret Perrow and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on two decades of interviews and ethnographic fieldwork (1998–2018), this book presents a unique and multi-faceted history of youth development in South Africa through the lens of a South African non-governmental organization (NGO) prominent in youth development from the mid-1980s until 2008. The book weaves history, ethnography, and discourse analysis to contextualize the Joint Enrichment Project (JEP) in the politics and history of South African education. It examines JEP’s role leading up to and during South Africa’s transition to democracy, its work and influence in post-apartheid South Africa, and the continued relevance of its legacy to contemporary initiatives seeking to address youth development and social justice. While JEP repeatedly repositioned itself as an organization, from fighting the effects of apartheid on young people to becoming a potential partner with the new African National Congress (ANC)-led government, its most significant role may have been to reposition people. After tracing JEP’s twenty-year history, the book focuses on the participants in a 1998 Youth Work Scheme, exploring their learning experiences and the program’s immediate impact on their lives. It then revisits these participants twenty years later in 2018, analyzing their life trajectories after JEP and comparing them with the life trajectories of former JEP staff over the same period—shedding light on broader patterns of socio-economic reproduction and change in the country. The book concludes with a discussion of a perennial paradox facing youth development institutions. This book will be of great interest to academics, researchers and post-graduate students in the fields of education, international development, anthropology, and African studies.

Book Roma Minority Youth Across Cultural Contexts

Download or read book Roma Minority Youth Across Cultural Contexts written by Radosveta Dimitrova and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores Positive Youth Development (PYD) in Roma ethnic minority youth. Standing apart from current volumes, this book focuses on the Roma ethnic minority -- one of the most marginalized and oppressed minority groups in Europe -- and on strengths and resources for optimal well-being in the community. The international and multidisciplinary contributors to this book address the complexities of Roma life in a variety of cultural settings, exploring how key developmental processes and person-context interactions can contribute to optimal and successful adaptation. The conclusions clarify how the PYD of ethnic minority children and youth may be fostered based on the empirical findings reported in the volume. The book draws on core theoretical models of PYD and theories of normative development from the perspective of developmental science to highlight the applicability of these frameworks to Roma groups. With a special focus on cultural, contextual, and socio-economic characteristics of Roma, this project also aims to provide a better understanding of what does and what does not contribute to the success of youth in oppressed minority groups.
