Book Babylonian Boundary Stones and Memorial Tablets in the British Museum Classic Reprint

Download or read book Babylonian Boundary Stones and Memorial Tablets in the British Museum Classic Reprint written by L. W. King and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Babylonian Boundary-Stones and Memorial-Tablets in the British Museum The present work contains thirty-seven texts from Babylonian Boundary-stones (kudurreti) and Memorial-tablets (nare), with translations, notes, and introduction; of these, twenty-five are published for the first time. They include the two earliest examples of this class of text now known, and four of the latest. The period covered by these texts extends from B.C. 1450 to B.C. 550, i.e., the whole period of Babylonian history during which Boundary-stones were employed for the protection of private property. In the series of texts here given, the following are of special interest, as they illustrate periods of history of which hitherto no contemporary records are known: 1. Text of the time of Kurigalzu, cut upon an ancient Boundary-stone, from which the original text had been erased; about B.C. 1400. 2. Text of the reign of Marduk-shapik-zer-mati, of the Fourth Dynasty of Babylon, about B.C. 1090. 3. Two texts drawn up in the reign of the usurper Adad-aplu-iddina, about B.C. 1080. 4. Text dated in the reign of Simmash-Shipak, about B.C. 1050, being the first known document of the Fifth Dynasty of Babylon. 5. Text of Itti-Marduk-balatu, a king hitherto unknown; his place will probably fall early in the Eighth Dynasty of Babylon, about B.C. 950. Other texts supply new and valuable records of the reigns of Enlil-nadin-aplu, about B.C. 1100, and Nabu-aplu-iddina, about B.C. 860. A very important difficulty in connection with early Kassite chronology is cleared up by another text, which proves that the Kassite monarch Kadashman-Kharbe, the father of Kurigalzu I, is not to be identified with Kadashman-Enlil, the correspondent of Amenophis III, as has been generally supposed. We now know that Kadashman-Kharbe and Kadashman-Enlil were two different kings, though both belonged to the Third Dynasty of Babylon. Yet another text, here published for the first time, settles definitively the values of the signs expressing the unit and its fractions and multiples in the Old Babylonian system of land-measurement. Finally, this series of texts throws a very considerable amount of light upon the Babylonian laws and customs which regulated land tenure and agricultural life. Of equal interest are the numerous symbols of the gods, which were engraved upon the Boundary-stones to protect them, as they are among the oldest examples of astral iconography we possess, and they have a very important bearing upon the age of Babylonian astronomy and the origin of the Zodiac. Book excerpt: The remains of ancient societies often require decades to unearth, but much longer to interpret and understand. The methods of archaeology have progressed dramatically in recent years. Archaeologists have continuously refined their tools, methods, and techniques. Today archaeology is characterized by pottery identification, classification, and cataloging; disciplined excavation of "squares"; use of sophisticated electronics, such as GPS, infrared, and computer-aided design; and the integration of multiple methodologies, such as epigraphy, art history, physical anthropology, paleobotany, and climatology. The interpretation of ancient Near Eastern history and cultures has also progressed. An increasing number of documents has been unearthed. The vast document collections from Tel el-Amarna, Nippur, Mari, Nuzi, Ebla, Ugarit, and the Dead Sea caves are just some of the more spectacular examples. These provide an enormous amount of detail about royal administrations, business transactions, land tenure systems, taxes, political propaganda, mythologies, marriage practices, and much more. And things that sometimes seem unique about one culture at first look often fit into larger patterns of relationship when the surrounding cultures are better understood. The Ancient Near East: Classic Studies (ANECS) reprints classic works that have brought the results of archaeology, textual, and historical investigations to audiences of scholars, students, and the general public. While the discussions continue and the results of earlier investigations are continuously re-examined, these classic works remain of interest and importance. K. C. HANSON Series Editor

Book Libraries Before Alexandria

Download or read book Libraries Before Alexandria written by Kim Ryholt and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019-08-15 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of the Library of Alexandria is widely regarded as one of the great achievements in the history of humankind - a giant endeavour to amass all known literature and scholarly texts in one central location, so as to preserve it and make it available for the public. In turn, this event has been viewed as a historical turning point that separates the ancient world from classical antiquity. Standard works on the library continue to present the idea behind the institution as novel and, at least implicitly, as a product of Greek thought. Yet, although the scale of the collection in Alexandria seems to have been unprecedented, the notion of creating central repositories of knowledge, while perhaps new to Greek tradition, was age-old in the Near East where the building was erected. Here the existence of libraries can be traced back another two millennia, from the twenty-seventh century BCE to the third century CE, and so the creation of the Library in Alexandria was not so much the beginning of an intellectual adventure as the impressive culmination of a very long tradition. This volume presents the first comprehensive study of these ancient libraries across the 'Cradle of Civilization' and traces their institutional and scholarly roots back to the early cities and states and the advent of writing itself. Leading specialists in the intellectual history of each individual period and region covered in the volume present and discuss the enormous textual and archaeological material available on the early collections, offering a uniquely readable account intended for a broad audience of the libraries in Egypt and Western Asia as centres of knowledge prior to the famous Library of Alexandria.

Book excerpt: Keywords: history, surveying, land tenure, land rights, cadastre, cadastral, professionalism, law, land administration, land policy, land boundaries, river, bank, high water mark, high-water mark, estuary, ICMA, mineral rights, international law, maritime zone, marine spatial planning, diagram, general plan, lease, sectional title, case law Explaining the principles of cadastral law and interpretation in practice, this is the first publication of its kind in over 45 years. It as a comprehensive text for aspiring and practicing professional land surveyors, those in the real property business, and those involved in land administration. Written for the South African practice environment, it will also be of interest to an international audience. The authors’ approach is progressive with the intent to inspire development to meet the needs of our society for secure land tenure for all. A broad range of topics are included: historical roots of tenure in the ancient world, the early development of the cadastre in South Africa, and development of the land surveying profession and professionalism. This provides context to the discussion on land law, tenure and rights; on legal institutions, on land administration, as well as government policies and reform imperatives. Defining property boundaries of rights in space is a particular challenge of the cadastral land surveyor. The chapters on the definition of beacons and boundaries cover a broad range of onshore and offshore application environments. They span the extent of ownership and limited real rights within the sovereign area of the Republic of South Africa. These environments include the air, the land surface and subterrestrial; coastal waters, and the sea bed. Particular attention is paid to complex river and coastal property boundaries. Case law is a key driver for changes in legislation and is also highly directive in terms of practice. The final chapter of the book is dedicated to a themed exploration of case law relating to beacons, boundaries, evidence, rights and restrictions. Cadastre: Principles and Practice will be an important addition to your professional bookshelf. Order it here: https://www.sagi.co.za/product/cadastre-principles-and-practice/
