Book Baby Boomer Health Dynamics

Download or read book Baby Boomer Health Dynamics written by Andrew V. Wister and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2005-12-15 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are the baby boomers in Canada more or less healthy than previous generations? What are the implications of this for the national health care system? Baby Boomer Health Dynamic responds to the growing interest in the generation that makes up over one-third of the Canadian population – the largest segment of society – with the leading edge reaching their sixty-fifth birthday in 2011 and eighty-five by 2031. Focusing on four health behaviours that have been proven to be major risk factors for disease: smoking, unhealthy exercise, obesity, and heavy drinking – Andrew V. Wister researches the long-term implications of several key lifestyle-health conundrums, most notably the paradoxical relationship in the concurrent trends over the last two decades of increased exercise levels and a significant rise in obesity. This invariably leads to questions about the eating habits of North Americans, and in particular, the quantity and quality of fast-food and convenience-food consumption. Recent public declarations by a number of health organizations and institutes that we are experiencing an obesity crisis, and moreover, that obesity is the 'new tobacco' makes Baby Boomer Health Dynamics both timely and topical.

Download or read book THE BOOMERS ARE COMING written by Jerry Rhoads and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-12-10 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The foundation of democracy is the pursuit of the Greater Good. As a country, we pursue what is good for most of the people, most of the time. But that is not our approach for the care of our elderly. Of the 330 million people in America 77 million are baby boomers. In the next 10 years a staggering majority of them turned 60. Even though it would be for the Greater Good of America, there are no provisions for taking care of these aging lives. There are only time bombs: • Currently, there are 2.3 million falls per year among the elderly in nursing homes. There will be 80 million per year when the baby boomers come of nursing home age • On the average, baby boomers will have 4 to 5 chronic illnesses by the time they are 65…that equates to 350 million chronic conditions • 77 million families will be impacted by the disabilities and chronic conditions imposed on them by aging baby boomers • 77 million households are not equipped and never will be to handle chronic illnesses and dependent lives • $77 trillion dollars will be imposed annually on the budgets of State and Federal Governments to care for the aging boomers • The 46 million uninsured will become 100 million as the baby boomers become retirement age and unemployed • There are currently 1.7 million nursing home patients in 18,000 nursing homes and 4 million assisted living residents in 23,000 assisted living facilities. We will need 12 times as many nursing homes and 15 times as many assisted living facilities to handle the 77 million baby boomers in a supportive setting • 2 million physicians, 2 million nurses, 7,500 hospitals and 750,000 other health professionals cannot handle the needs of 77 million aging baby boomers. But they do want their share of the health care dollars. Making the radical change from health maintenance to prevention and health preservation would serve the greater good and make more Medicare money available. On top of these time bombs we have 77 million high expectations. If we are expecting these 77 million baby boomers to just accept nursing homes and assisted living as they are…think again. They tend to be dependent on others for their approach to health care and generally are not staying healthy; nor are they schooled on preserving their health and do not pay more for poor health. Compounding this, their health care providers are not schooled in detecting cause or in pursuing measurable outcomes. But they are paid regardless of results

Download or read book Baby Boomers written by M. Joanna Mellor, DSW and published by Springer Publishing Company. This book was released on 2005-05-17 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the United States prepared for the Baby Boomers to grow old? This book seeks to answer these questions. It also suggests strategies to make sure that the answer to these questions becomes YES. Much has been written about the Baby Boom generation but this is the first book to address current issues they face while simultaneously projecting ahead to challenges and benefits that are likely to characterize this next generation of older persons. It is based on keynote presentations by noted leaders in the field of aging, who discuss their expectations of their old age. Thus, it is both an introductory primer to aging today as well as a book that raises questions, suggests solutions, and indicates avenues of planning for the future. The book takes a close look at the state of readiness of health and social service providers for the large numbers of older persons in society's future. A careful look is taken at what is and what might be in the areas of income security, health security and health care, long-term care, and housing and living arrangements. The importance of this book lies in the fact that it addresses the lack of planning by both the Baby Boomers and services providers, and identifies steps to be taken, with particular emphasis given to needed changes in the education of health and social service professionals to prepare them for what lies ahead.

Download or read book Achieving Unlimited Health written by James Cima and published by . This book was released on 2015-01-08 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did you know that you have a brand new body every six months to a year? That's right! you have brand new bones, organs, muscles, etc. If this is so why are we aging, some of us much quicker than others? By the time most people reach their forties, fifties, and sixties, their bodies have started to undergo life-threatening degenerative processes, such as cancer or heart disease. Even if we are fortunate to live passed this mark, the quality of life sometimes leaves much to be desired. Our physical and mental capabilities diminish rapidly, accompanied by pain and a myriad of symptoms. To some, death, may seem like the easy way out. If you answer yes to any of these 3 questions, then this book is for you!: Is there anything more important than your health? Does your health concern and worry you? Are you aging prematurely? Ponce Deleon went in search of the Elusive Fountain of Youth, and Dr. Cima found it in a quote by Mr. Thomas Edison: "The Doctor of the Future will give no medication but will interest his patients in diet, care of the human frame, and the cause and prevention of disease." Although the definition was near perfect, there was no how-to manual that explained how the doctor was going to treat his patients or to instruct them on how they should care for their health... until now. After 43 years of teaching, practicing, writing, and living this philosophy, Dr. Cima wrote this book. The purpose of which, is to give you the 20% that will yield 80% of your results. That means that your health can literally improve over the next few years regardless how bad your health or health problems are now. Dr. Cima hopes that you will enjoy this book as much as he did writing it. He wrote it for you, your family and loved ones."

Download or read book Do Or Die written by Jim McFarland and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-08 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do or Die is designed exclusively to help baby-boomer men restore health, vitality, happiness, and longevity through fitness, faith, and food. Do or Die explains how to get out of denial and discover the inspiration and willpower to create life-changing renewal and a healthy lifestyle. Do or Die reviews seven midlife chronic conditions that reduce life expectancy and life quality. Author Jim McFarland calls these "pathways to middle-aged male destruction." Based on his personal experiences and years of extensive research, Do or Die offers numerous strategies and ideas for exercise, weight management, nutrition, and life balance. McFarland's advice will help you: Start defeating the vicious grip of denial Recognize how to rebuild your self-esteem Understand how to lose weight Learn how good nutrition and exercise will help lower your cholesterol and your risk of type two diabetes and heart disease Understand how to take responsibility for your health Learn how to avoid injuries when exercising Discover the importance of using a heart rate monitor for all fitness training Do or Die will guide you in writing a personal renewal plan, and it will also help you learn how to create and enjoy balance in your life. Take the first step towards better health today! With his health declining, McFarland took control and turned his life around. At 52, the author was what has become your Standard American Male-obese, sedentary, hypertensive and in deep denial-when his doctor reported that he was a prime candidate for type-two diabetes. The good news is that he decided to do something about it. In frank language, he discusses his renewal strategy and the routines and behaviors for rebuilding his physical and mental health, finding balance and peace in the process. First he had to own up to his rotten condition, his blubber and sloth, and become conversant with his body's cardiovascular needs, his metabolism, what comprises a healthy diet and his need for physical activity. Thus began his education in cholesterol, stress, midlife depression, the body mass index, blood analysis, high blood sugar and a host of other subjects-all of which he manages to convey in clarity and modest depth, despite his lack of professional training. He endeavored to use common sense in his eating and exercise, gradually creating a life script comprised of the seven Fs: Fitness (he provides a detailed, gradual program), Finding what is important in your life, having Faith in what you believe (discovering some spiritual support), eating the right Foods, time with Family, Friendships and having Fun. He consistently stresses the elemental need for self-respect; without it, he says, you won't have the will to embark on what amounts to a complete lifestyle change. A helpful if arduous map for living a better life that certainly beats the alternative: giving up and dying. -Kirkus Discoveries
