Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third volume of Babel & Bibel, an annual of ancient Near Eastern, Old Testament, and Semitic studies. The principal goal of the annual is to reveal the inherent relationship between Assyriology, Semitics, and biblical studies—a relationship that our predecessors comprehended and fruitfully explored but that is often neglected today. The title Babel & Bibel is intended to point to the possibility of fruitful collaboration among the three disciplines, in an effort to explore the various civilizations of the ancient Near East. The tripartite division of Babel & Bibel corresponds to its three principal spheres of interest: ancient Near Eastern, Old Testament, and Semitic studies. Contributions are further subdivided into articles, short notes, and reviews.

Book Memoriae Igor M Diakonoff

Download or read book Memoriae Igor M Diakonoff written by Leonid Efimovich Kogan and published by Eisenbrauns. This book was released on 2005 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2005 marked the 90th anniversary of the birth of Igor Diakonoff (1915-1999). A classical Semitist in educational background, Diakonoff was most influential in his principal field of research--Assyriology. However, Diakonoff was also broadly interested in various aspects of ancient Near Eastern studies, notably Mesopotamian history, Semitic and Afroasiatic linguistics, and biblical studies. Although not major domains of Diakonoff's scholarship, Biblical Hebrew and the ancient Near Eastern background of the Old Testament were areas of expertise that made him one of the leading figures of biblical studies in Russia. For several decades Diakonoff was a "live bridge" between ancient Near Eastern and Semitic scholars working in Russia and the international scholarly community. Fittingly, this volume of Babel & Bibel in memory of Diakonoff contains essays, short notes, and reviews by scholars from the Russian and international scholarly community on topics in ancient Near Eastern, Semitic and Afroasiatic, and Old Testament studies. The contributors include A. Archi, G. F. del Monte, G. del Olmo Lete, J.-M. Durand, B. R. Foster, P. Franzaroli, S. Loesov, J. Marzahn, J. Pasquali, W. Sommerfeld, K. Markina, N. Roudik, M. P. Streck, M. V. Tonietti, W. R. Garr, K. Jongeling, M. Seleznev, V. Blazek, M. Bulakh, T. Frolova, J. Huehnergard, R. M. Kerr, L. Kogan, A. Militarev, J. Sanmartin, G. Takacs, A. Zaborski, N. V. Koslova, S. Loesov, and L. M. Dreyer.

Book From Creation to Babel Studies in Genesis 1 11

Download or read book From Creation to Babel Studies in Genesis 1 11 written by John Day and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories of Genesis 1-11 constitute one of the better known parts of the Old Testament, but their precise meaning and background still provide many debated questions for the modern interpreter. In this stimulating, learned and readable collection of essays, which paves the way for his forthcoming ICC commentary on these chapters, John Day attempts to provide definitive solutions to some ofthese questions. Amongst the topics included are the background and interpretation of the seven-day Priestly Creation narrative, problems in the interpretation of the Garden of Eden story, the relation of Cain and the Kenites, the strange stories of the sons of God and daughters of men and of Noah's drunkenness and the curse of Canaan, the precise ancient Near Eastern background of the Flood story and the preceding genealogies, and the meaning and background of the story of the tower and city of Babel. Throughout this volume John Day constantly seeks to determine the original meaning of these stories in the light of their ancient Near Eastern background, and to determine how far this original meaning has been obscured by later interpretations.

The principal goal of the annual is to reveal the inherent relationship between Assyriology, Semitics, and biblical studies—a relationship that our predecessors comprehended and fruitfully explored but that is often neglected today. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1903 edition. Excerpt: ... Notes LECTURE I The Lecture published in the preceding pages was delivered for the German Oriental Society on the 13th of January 1902, in the Academy of Music at Berlin, in the presence of His Majesty the King and Emperor, and, at the most gracious wish of the Emperor, was repeated on the 1st of February in the Royal Palace at Berlin. The meaning of the title has, with few exceptions, been quite correctly understood: "Babel as the interpreter and illustrator of the Bible." So the Schlesische Zeitung for 24th January 1902: "Babel and Bible--this was the short but comprehensive heading, signifying that the speaker intended to discuss the results of the excavations in BabyIonia and Assyria in their bearing on the Bible." Out of the multitude of rejoinders and more detailed reviews that have been called forth by " Babel and Bible "--in so far as they have come to my knowledge since my return from Babylonia, and have proved to be of interest, scientifically or otherwise--attention may be specially called to the following. My own notes, which I have added, are only meant to serve a passing purpose. Not until the lectures on "Babel and the Bible" have been continued and concluded will the time be ripe for a complete critical review of the replies they haA-e called forth. I. J. Barth, Babel und israeUtisches Religionsicesen. A Lecture. Berlin, 1902; 36 pp. Prof. Dr. Karl Budde, Das Alte Testament und die Ausgrabungen. Giessen, 1903. (A Lecture, delivered May 29, 1902, at the Theological Conference at Giessen); 39 pages, of which, however, only pp. 1-10 concern "Babel und Bibel." The following passage in Budde's lecture may be fixed upon here, on account of its bearings (p. 6 sq.): "At all events, the calm decisiveness with which he emphasises...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the eighth volume of Babel und Bibel, an annual of ancient Near Eastern, Old Testament, and Semitic studies. The principal goal of the annual is to reveal the inherent relationship between Assyriology, Semitics, and biblical studies—a relationship that our predecessors comprehended and fruitfully explored but that is often neglected today. The title Babel und Bibel is intended to point to the possibility of fruitful collaboration among the three disciplines, in an effort to explore the various civilizations of the ancient Near East. This volume is a festschrift for Joachim Krecher, Professor of Assyriology in the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster. Krecher is best known, perhaps, for his seminal Sumerische Kultlyrik, published already in 1966. This compendium includes 17 essays by friends and colleagues, all focusing on Sumerian language and literature.

Book Morphologies of Asia and Africa

Download or read book Morphologies of Asia and Africa written by Alan S. Kaye and published by Eisenbrauns. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 1379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1997, Eisenbrauns published the highly-regarded two-volume Phonologies of Asia and Africa, edited by Alan Kaye with the assistance of Peter T. Daniels, and the book rapidly became the standard reference for the phonologies of the Afro-Asiatic languages. Now the concept has been extended, and Kaye has assembled nearly 50 scholars to write essays on the morphologies of the same language group. The coverage is complete, copious, and again will likely become the standard work in the field. Contributors are an international Who's Who of Afro-Asiatic linguistics, from Appleyard to Leslau to Voigt. It is with great sadness that we report the death of Alan Kaye on May 31, 2007, while these volumes were in the final stages of preparation for the press. Alan was diagnosed with bone cancer on May 1 while on research leave in the United Arab Emirates and was brought home to Fullerton by his son on May 22.
