Book Calendar of State Papers Domestic Series of the Reign of Anne Preserved in the Public Record Office

Download or read book Calendar of State Papers Domestic Series of the Reign of Anne Preserved in the Public Record Office written by Great Britain. Public Record Office and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2006-08-17 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Further volume of the State Papers of Queen Anne covers the victory at Ramillies among other concerns. This volume brings the Domestic Calendar to the end of the secretaryship of Sir Charles Hedges, and the appointment of Lord Sutherland in his place. Drawn from several categories of State Papers, the records contain the usual mixture of high politics and local concerns, though they are far from insular: Marlborough's second great victory, at Ramillies, is reported and celebrated, for example, and communications are improved with the forces in northern Europe. The volume also summarises papers relating to the American plantations, and the evolving debate on the application there of English Law; such entries complement and enhance what has already been published in the Calendar ofTreasury Books, and the process of referral and evaluation can often be followed through to an executive decision. Recurring items include army commissions and other formal appointments, payments to envoys, patents for inventions, and passes to individuals and ships. The records are complemented by an extensive and analytical index. Dr DAVID CROOK is Assistant Keeper of Public Records, the National Archives, London.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the nineteenth-century United States, jokes, comic anecdotes, and bons mots about the Pacific Islands and Pacific Islanders tried to make the faraway and unfamiliar either understandable or completely incomprehensible (i.e., “other”) to American readers. A Laughable Empire examines this substantial archival corpus, attempting to make sense of nineteenth-century American humor about Hawai‘i and the rest of the Pacific world. Todd Nathan Thompson collects and interprets these comic, sometimes racist depictions of Pacific culture in nineteenth-century American print culture. Drawing on an archive of almanac and periodical humor, sea yarns, jest books, and literary comedy, Thompson demonstrates how jokes and humor functioned sometimes in the service of and sometimes in resistance to US imperial ambitions. Thompson also includes Indigenous voices and jokes lampooning Americans and their customs to show how humor served as an important cultural contact zone between the United States and the Pacific world. He considers how nineteenth-century Americans and Pacific Islanders alike used humor to employ stereotypes or to question them, to “other” the unknown or to interrogate, laughingly, the process by which “othering” occurs and is disseminated. Incisive and detailed, A Laughable Empire documents American humor about Pacific geography, food, dress, speech, and customs. Thompson sheds new light not only on nineteenth-century America’s imperial ambitions but also on its deep anxieties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid-twentieth century China and India have entertained a difficult relationship, erupting into open war in 1962. Shadow States is the first book to unpack Sino-Indian tensions from the angle of competitive state-building - through a study of their simultaneous attempts to win the approval and support of the Himalayan people. When China and India tried to expand into the Himalayas in the twentieth century, their lack of strong ties to the region and the absence of an easily enforceable border made their proximity threatening - observing China and India's state-making efforts, local inhabitants were in a position to compare and potentially choose between them. Using rich and original archival research, Bérénice Guyot-Réchard shows how India and China became each other's 'shadow states'. Understanding these recent, competing processes of state formation in the Himalayas is fundamental to understanding the roots of tensions in Sino-Indian relations.

Book The University of Wisconsin

Download or read book The University of Wisconsin written by Arthur Hove and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 928 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you have ever spent part of your life on the shores of Lake Mendota--whether student or staff, whether personally or vicariously as a parent, whether then or now--you will immediately recognize The University of Wisconsin: A Pictorial History as a celebration of that time and memory, of that community. It is part of your family tree. In eight lively, readable chapters Arthur Hove tells us the story of a tiny pre-Civil War land grant college that grew into the modern "multiversity" we know today (which, by itself, would be the sixth largest "city" in the state). But the text, engaging as it is, is really the frame for the book's most impressive feature--the exquisite album of nearly 400 photographs, thirty-two pages of them in full color, that capture the timeless moments and faces, the unforgettable characters and controversies, the high points (and the hijinks!) of 130 years of Badger lore. The words and images tell countless stories: of Bascom Hall, which was originally domed. After a mysterious fire destroyed the dome in 1916 it was simply never restored. of the famous "sifting and winnowing" plaque. The regents of the time didn't care for it much--academic "freedom" was a radical idea. It gathered dust in a basement for years before it was finally mounted in 1915. of Pat O'Dea, who made a sixty-three-yard drop kick against Northwestern in 1899. Lost and presumed dead in World War I, he was "discovered" in 1934 living under an assumed name in California. of Harry Steenbock, who was offered $900,000 (in 1925!) for commercial rights to his food irradiation process that eliminated rickets in children. Instead, he helped set up the WARF foundation to fund research from his patent proceeds.
