Book B Meson Physics with Polarized Electron Beams at Linear Colliders Running at the Z

Download or read book B Meson Physics with Polarized Electron Beams at Linear Colliders Running at the Z written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The expected large cross section for e e Z and subsequent decay to b/bar b/ quarks makes the Z an attractive placeto pursue B meson physics. The cross section for b-quark production at the Z is compared to resonance production at the UPSILON/sub 4s/ and UPSILON/sub 5s/. In addition the big electroweak asymmetries, thought to exist in Z decays to b/bar b/ quarks with polarized electron beams, provide an outstanding handle for observation of such effects as B - /bar B/ mixing. In this paper, the feasibility of such measurements is investigated and, with relatively small samples of Z's (a few hundred thousand), both B/sub d/ and B/sub s/ meson mixing are shown to be measurable. The subject of CP violation in neutral B mesons is discussed last, but presently such measurements seem to be out of reach. 7 refs., 7 figs., 3 tabs.

Book B Physics at the Z Sup 0 Pole

Download or read book B Physics at the Z Sup 0 Pole written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The SLC has been running at SLAC since April, and more than 100 Z° events have been reconstructed. Shortly the new European facility at CERN-LEP-will also turn on, and by the end of the year we anticipate that more than 10,000 Z° events will have been registered by each of the four LEP detectors. Most of the experimental facilities at these two machines are equipped with excellent particle tracking and identification. Some have close-in tracking devices which will provide unparalleled precision in trajectory reconstruction, and lead to the possibility of identifying a large proportion of the charmed and beauty particles. Not only does the Z° pole offer a relatively large production cross section for ee− machines, but a large proportion of the events are b{bar b} pairs. One sees from this figure that a gain of six or more is obtained from running at the Z°. An SLC producing 105 events per year yields 20,000 b{bar b} events. Similarly, for LEP, over 200,000 b{bar b} events will become available per year. In addition, the planned upgrade for LEP will increase its luminosity by about an order of magnitude, and the SLC will run with polarized electron beams. The physics that may be studies from these event samples fall into two general categories: tests of the Standard Model; and studies of B mesons and B baryons, including lifetimes, mixing, spectroscopy, and CP violation. 8 refs., 8 figs., 1 tab.

Book Physics With A High Luminosity Polarized Electron Ion Collider Proceedings Of The Workshop On High Energy Nuclear Physics Epic 99

This book was released on 2000-02-28 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop on Physics with an Electron-Polarized Ion Collider (EPIC-99), jointly sponsored by the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility and Nuclear Theory Center, and the Institute for Nuclear Theory, University of Washington. It was held in Bloomington, Indiana, April 8-11, 1999. The purpose was to discuss important new physics phenomena which could be investigated with a high-luminosity asymmetric collider consisting of a beam of polarized electrons (with energy roughly 5 GeV), and a beam of polarized protons or other light ions of approximately 40 GeV energy. The Workshop brought together experts in the field who highlighted the unique potential for such a facility, and compared the prospects and challenges for this collider with present and proposed facilities around the world. The proceedings of this Workshop summarize our currently available knowledge on the physics potential for a polarized asymmetric collider. It provides a unique collection of information on the opportunities which such a facility would provide.

Book Highly Polarized Electron Beams for Linear Colliders

Download or read book Highly Polarized Electron Beams for Linear Colliders written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The SLC operates with electron beams having a polarization of (almost equal to) 80%. The physics opportunities for future colliders will be greatly enhanced if the beam polarization can be significantly higher. The prospects for achieving electron single-beam polarizations> 95% are discussed. A complimentary achievement would be to use two-beam polarization.

Book Polarized Electron Beams for Linear Colliders

Download or read book Polarized Electron Beams for Linear Colliders written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longitudinally polarized electron beams for high energy collisions provide a sensitive way to explore the electroweak process as well as an effective means to measure spin dependent properties of particles. Once created, such beams are readily accelerated by linacs without loss of polarization, although emittance damping rings present potential hazards. The essential elements of a collider necessary for the utilization of polarized electrons are described. The key element is the polarized electron source as illustrated by the SLC which now operates with P{sub e} (approximately) 80% in the 50 GeV linac. Possible improvements for future colliders are discussed.

Download or read book Polarized Electrons written by Joachim Kessler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1985-10 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid growth of the subject since the first edition ten years ago has made it necessary to rewrite the greater part of the book. Except for the introductory portion and the section on Mott scattering, the book has been completely revised. In Chap. 3, sections on polarization violating reflection symmetry, on resonance scattering, and on inelastic processes have been added. Chapter 4 has been rewritten, taking account of the numerous novel results obtained in exchange scattering. Chapter 5 includes the recent discoveries on photoelectron polarization produced by unpolarized radiation with unpolarized targets and on Auger-electron polarization. In Chap. 6, a further discussion of relativistic polarization phenomena has been added to the book. The immense growth of polarization studies with solids and surfaces required an extension and new presentation of Chap. 7. All but one section of Chap. 8 has been rewritten and a detailed treatment of polarization analysis has been included. Again, a nearly comprehensive treatment has been attempted. Even so, substantial selectivity among the wide range of available material has been essential in order to accomplish a compact presentation. The reference list, selected along the same lines as in the first edition, is meant to lead the reader through the literature giving a guide for finding further references. I want to express my indebtedness to a number of people whose help has been invaluable.

Book Precision Electroweak Physics at Electron Positron Colliders

Download or read book Precision Electroweak Physics at Electron Positron Colliders written by Stefan Roth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This up-to-date volume reviews the recent contributions of electron-positron colliders to the precision test of the electroweak Standard Model. In particular, it contains a short summary of the measurements at the Z resonance and gives an overview of the electroweak processes above the Z. Subsequently, the measurement of the W mass at LEP is discussed in detail. The implications for the precision test of the Standard Model are presented, giving the status of the global electroweak fit before the startup of Large Hadron Collider. The final chapters give an outlook on the electroweak physics at a future linear collider. The book also features many illustrations and tables. Readers obtain a coherent overview of the results of 20 years of electroweak physics conducted at electron-positron colliders.

Download or read book Elementary Particle Physics written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-05-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of the Physics in a New Era series of assessments of the various branches of the field, Elementary-Particle Physics reviews progress in the field over the past 10 years and recommends actions needed to address the key questions that remain unanswered. It explains in simple terms the present picture of how matter is constructed. As physicists have probed ever deeper into the structure of matter, they have begun to explore one of the most fundamental questions that one can ask about the universe: What gives matter its mass? A new international accelerator to be built at the European laboratory CERN will begin to explore some of the mechanisms proposed to give matter its heft. The committee recommends full U.S. participation in this project as well as various other experiments and studies to be carried out now and in the longer term.
