Book Scaling Methods

Download or read book Scaling Methods written by Peter Dunn-Rankin and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scaling Methods is written for professionals in the behavioral sciences who analyze data that results from subjective responses. Other books on scaling attitudes or measuring perceptions focus on the psychometrician's view of measurement. This book focuses on the users' view by concentrating on effective ways to analyze data rather than the mathematical details of how each program works. The methods included handle the majority of data analysis problems encountered and are accompanied by a software solution. Each chapter features the theory surrounding that methodology, an example, a real-world application, and a computer solution. This book introduces the major uni- and multi-dimensional scaling method techniques most common in educational, social, and psychological research. Using four primary methods of data collection--ordering, categorical rating, free clustering, and similarity judgments--Scaling Methods, Second Edition explains how such data can be represented in ways that illustrate relationships among the data and help reveal underlying dimensional structures. Each method serves as an independent unit so readers can pick and choose from a variety of easy-to-use procedures and more advanced techniques. The new edition features a new chapter on order analysis and downloadable resources that provide stand-alone, as well as SAS supported demonstrations of multi-dimensional scaling techniques, plus programs to get raw data into matrix form. The text is written for researchers, practitioners, and advanced students in education and the social and behavioral sciences interested in analyzing data resulting from subjective responses, especially in the measurement of attitudes. Each chapter is self-contained making this an excellent resource for use in the classroom or as a self-study tool. A first course in statistics is a helpful prerequisite.

Book Regression Analysis

Download or read book Regression Analysis written by Ashish K. Sen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any method of fitting equations to data may be called regression. Such equations are valuable for at least two purposes: making predictions and judging the strength of relationships. Because they provide a way of em pirically identifying how a variable is affected by other variables, regression methods have become essential in a wide range of fields, including the soeial seiences, engineering, medical research and business. Of the various methods of performing regression, least squares is the most widely used. In fact, linear least squares regression is by far the most widely used of any statistical technique. Although nonlinear least squares is covered in an appendix, this book is mainly ab out linear least squares applied to fit a single equation (as opposed to a system of equations). The writing of this book started in 1982. Since then, various drafts have been used at the University of Toronto for teaching a semester-Iong course to juniors, seniors and graduate students in a number of fields, including statistics, pharmacology, pharmacology, engineering, economics, forestry and the behav ioral seiences. Parts of the book have also been used in a quarter-Iong course given to Master's and Ph.D. students in public administration, urban plan ning and engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). This experience and the comments and critieisms from students helped forge the final version.

Book Metric Scaling

    Book Details:
  • Author : Susan C. Weller
  • Publisher : SAGE
  • Release : 1990
  • ISBN : 9780803937505
  • Pages : 100 pages

Download or read book Metric Scaling written by Susan C. Weller and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1990 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents a set of closely related techniques that facilitate the exploration and display of a wide variety of multivariate data, both categorical and continuous. Three methods of metric scaling, correspondence analysis, principal components analysis, and multiple dimensional preference scaling are explored in detail for strengths and weaknesses over a wide range of data types and research situations. "The introduction illustrates the methods with a small dataset. This approach is effective--in a few minutes, with no mathematical requirement, the reader can understand the capabilities, similarities, and differences of the methods. . . . Numerical examples facilitate learning. The authors use several examples with small datasets that illustrate very well the links and the differences between the methods. . . . we find this text very good and recommend it for graduate students and social science researchers, especially those who are interested in applying some of these methods and in knowing the relationship among them." --Journal of Marketing Research "Illustrate[s] the service Sage provides by making high-quality works on research methods available at modest prices. . . . The authors use several interesting examples of practical applications on data sets, ranging from contraception preferences, to pottery shards from archeological digs, to durable consumer goods from market research. These examples indicate the broad range of possible applications of the method to social science data." --Contemporary Sociology "The book is a bargain; it is clearly written." --Journal of Classification

Book Applied Multivariate Analysis

Download or read book Applied Multivariate Analysis written by S. James Press and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2012-09-05 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geared toward upper-level undergraduates and graduate students, this two-part treatment deals with the foundations of multivariate analysis as well as related models and applications. Starting with a look at practical elements of matrix theory, the text proceeds to discussions of continuous multivariate distributions, the normal distribution, and Bayesian inference; multivariate large sample distributions and approximations; the Wishart and other continuous multivariate distributions; and basic multivariate statistics in the normal distribution. The second half of the text moves from defining the basics to explaining models. Topics include regression and the analysis of variance; principal components; factor analysis and latent structure analysis; canonical correlations; stable portfolio analysis; classifications and discrimination models; control in the multivariate linear model; and structuring multivariate populations, with particular focus on multidimensional scaling and clustering. In addition to its value to professional statisticians, this volume may also prove helpful to teachers and researchers in those areas of behavioral and social sciences where multivariate statistics is heavily applied. This new edition features an appendix of answers to the exercises.

Book Probability Statistics And Decision Making In The Atmospheric Sciences

Download or read book Probability Statistics And Decision Making In The Atmospheric Sciences written by Allan Murphy and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methodology drawn from the fields of probability. statistics and decision making plays an increasingly important role in the atmosphericsciences. both in basic and applied research and in experimental and operational studies. Applications of such methodology can be found in almost every facet of the discipline. from the most theoretical and global (e.g., atmospheric predictability. global climate modeling) to the most practical and local (e.g., crop-weather modeling forecast evaluation). Almost every issue of the multitude of journals published by the atmospheric sciences community now contain some or more papers involving applications of concepts and/or methodology from the fields of probability and statistics. Despite the increasingly pervasive nature of such applications. very few book length treatments of probabilistic and statistical topics of particular interest to atmospheric scientists have appeared (especially inEnglish) since the publication of the pioneering works of Brooks andCarruthers (Handbook of Statistical Methods in Meteorology) in 1953 and Panofsky and Brier-(some Applications of)statistics to Meteor) in 1958. As a result. many relatively recent developments in probability and statistics are not well known to atmospheric scientists and recent work in active areas of meteorological research involving significant applications of probabilistic and statistical methods are not familiar to the meteorological community as a whole.
