This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bader-Almanach Reports of Spas, Climatic Stations and Sanatoria in Germany, Austria-Hungary, Switzerland and Adjoing Countries, for Physicians and Patients, 1912 The "Bader-Almanach" issued since more than 30 years by the undersigned publisher is known to be sent in thousands of copies free of charge also to those physicians of foreign countries who are acquainted with the German language. But it has often been suggested to publish the "Bader-Almanach" in foreign languages, too, in order to supply also physicians abroad, that are not or not sufficiently conversant with the German language, with such a reliable book of reference and information. Now, some time ago, the newly founded "Association of Proprietors of Sanatoria" chose the "Bader-Almanach" of the undersigned publisher as its "official-organ" for the publication of the prospectus of its members, in order to oppose to the steadily propagating exploitation of this field by so-called "guides." At the same time, it was considered desirable to have editions in foreign languages, too. The undersigned publisher has complied with this demand by issuing a Russian edition in 1911, and now the first English edition which is being forwarded free of charge to practitioners in Great Britain, America, and English Colonies. Compared with the first Russian issue the present edition has been considerably amplified and improved, in as much as the extensive scientific section of the last German edition of the "Bader-Almanach" (1910) elaborated by prominent balneologists was added. We hope sincerely that this book will render valuable service to the addressee, and answer its purpose of being a reliable work of reference and a handbook in the vast field of balneology. Book The Spas of Germany Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Spas of Germany Classic Reprint written by Augustus Bozzi Granville and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spas of Germany Ir does not often fall to the lot of a writer who undertakes to add a fresh work to English literature, to light upon a sub jcet absolutely new. Still less often does it happen that what is new shall prove, at the same time, useful and amusing. To two of these qualities, the subject I have selected on the present occasion may lay indisputable claim. Whether the third or last of them may, with the like justice, be ascribed in it, depends on the manner in which the subject has been treated - and of that the reader alone must judge. The very motive which induced me, in this instance, to com pose and publish a work on the Mineral Waters in Germany, -o namely, the total want of such a book in the English language, - shows that the subject, in this country, must be new -i mean new when treated, as I trust it has been in the present vo lume, in the character of a general, full, extended, and practical account of the principal and most celebrated of those waters ah account that shall leave no part of the necessary information respecting them untouched; and new also, as resulting from recent investigations of the places themselves, instituted 'in every case by the author in person. Book The End and the Beginning

Download or read book The End and the Beginning written by Hermynia Zur Mühlen and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in Germany in 1929, The End and the Beginning is a lively personal memoir of a vanished world and of a rebellious, high-spirited young woman's struggle to achieve independence. Born in 1883 into a distinguished and wealthy aristocratic family of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire, Hermynia Zur Muhlen spent much of her childhood travelling in Europe and North Africa with her diplomat father. After five years on her German husband's estate in czarist Russia she broke with both her family and her husband and set out on a precarious career as a professional writer committed to socialism. Besides translating many leading contemporary authors, notably Upton Sinclair, into German, she herself published an impressive number of politically engaged novels, detective stories, short stories, and children's fairy tales. Because of her outspoken opposition to National Socialism, she had to flee her native Austria in 1938 and seek refuge in England, where she died, virtually penniless, in 1951. This revised and corrected translation of Zur Muhlen's memoir - with extensive notes and an essay on the author by Lionel Gossman - will appeal especially to readers interested in women's history, the Central European aristocratic world that came to an end with the First World War, and the culture and politics of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Book The Life and Work of Sigmund Freud

Download or read book The Life and Work of Sigmund Freud written by Ernest Jones and published by Plunkett Lake Press. This book was released on 2019-08-09 with total page 763 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ernest Jones’s three-volume The Life and Work of Sigmund Freud was first published in the mid-1950s. This edited and abridged volume omits the portions of the trilogy that dealt principally with the technical aspects of Freud’s work and is designed for the lay reader. Jones portrays Freud’s childhood and adolescence; the excitement and trials of his four-year engagement to Martha Bernays; his early experiments with hypnotism and cocaine; the slow rise of his reputation and constant battles against distortion and slander; the painful defections of close associates; the years of international eminence; the onset of cancer and his stoicism in the face of an agonizing death. “One of the outstanding biographies of the age... It gives us an unmatched — and unretouched — portrait of Freud as a human being.” — The New York Times “The definitive life of Freud and one of the great biographies of our time... Charged with intellectual excitement, it is a chronicle of heroic struggle and adventurous discovery.” — The Atlantic “A landmark of literature, a remarkable appreciation of one of the remarkable spirits of the modern age.” — Scientific American “Superb drama... Dr. Jones has managed to illuminate some obscure corners of Freud’s first years with a thoroughness that would have astonished, and might well have dismayed, the reticent and august Freud.” — The New Yorker “A masterpiece of contemporary biography... The letters are also a fascinating guide to the man. From them emerges suddenly a tough, jealous, ferocious figure.” — Time

Download or read book Landscapes of Disease written by Katerina Gardikas and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malaria has existed in Greece since prehistoric times. Its prevalence fluctuated depending on climatic, socioeconomic and political changes. The book focuses on the factors that contributed to the spreading of the disease in the years between independent statehood in 1830 and the elimination of malaria in the 1970s. By the nineteenth century, Greece was the most malarious country in Europe and the one most heavily infected with its lethal form, falciparum malaria. Owing to pressures on the environment from economic development, agrarian colonization and heightened mobility, the situation became so serious that malaria became a routine part of everyday life for practically all Greek families, further exacerbated by wars. The country’s highly fragmented geography and its variable rainfall distribution created an environment that was ideal for sustaining and spreading of diseases, which, in turn, affected the tolerance of the population to malaria. In their struggle with physical suffering and death, the Greeks developed a culture of avid quinine consumption and were likewise eager to embrace the DDT spraying campaign of the immediate post WW II years, which, overall, had a positive demographic effect.

Book Tourists Tourism and the Good Life

Download or read book Tourists Tourism and the Good Life written by Philip Pearce and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-09-13 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourism is arguably one of the largest self-initiated commercial interventions to create well-being and happiness on the entire planet. Yet there is a lack of specific attention to the ways in which we can better understand and evaluate the relationship between well-being and travel. The recent surge of scholarly work in positive psychology concerned with human well-being and flourishing represents a contemporary force with the potential to embellish and augment much current tourism study. This book maps out the field and then draws links between tourists, tourism and positive psychology. It discusses topics such as the issue of excess materialism and its fragile relationship with well-being, the value of positive psychology to lifestyle businesses, and the insights of the research field to spa and wellness tourism. This volume will interest those who study and practise tourism as well as scholars and graduate students in a range of disciplines such as psychology, sociology, business and leisure.

Book The Multinational History of Strasbourg Astronomical Observatory

Download or read book The Multinational History of Strasbourg Astronomical Observatory written by Andre HECK and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-04 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strasbourg Astronomical Observatory is quite an interesting place for historians: several changes of nationality between France and Germany, high-profile scientists having been based there, big projects born or installed within its walls, and so on. Most of the documents circulating on the history of the Observatory and on related matters have however been so far poorly referenced, if at all. This made necessary the compilation of a volume such as this one, offering fully-documented historical facts and references on the first decades of the Observatory history, authored by both French and German specialists. The experts contributing to this book have done their best to write in a way understandable to readers not necessarily hyperspecialized in astronomy nor in the details of European history. Several appendices conclude the book: lists of council members and of Observatory scientific personnel, as well as a compendium of the institutional publications until the year 2000.
