We study a variety of decays dominated by electromagnetic, electroweak and gluonic penguin transitions, and report measurements of branching fractions.

Book excerpt: The authors present results on searches for the rare B decays B° → ll− (l = e or?) and B+ → K+?{bar?} in?(4S) decays. The data used in these analyses were collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e+e− storage ring during the years 2000 and 2001. The B° → l+l− search was performed using an integrated luminosity of 54.4 fb−1 accumulated at the?(4S) resonance (about 60 million B{bar B} pairs) while the B+ → K+?{bar?} search was performed with 50.7 fb−1 (about 56 million B{bar B} pairs). Both analyses use an additional 6.4 fb−1 of data accumulated about 40 MeV below resonance. They see no evidence for a signal in either the B → l+l− or B → K+{nu}{bar {nu}} decay modes and set the following upper limits at the 90% CL:?(B° → e+e−)

We discuss the SM in some detail, focusing on the mechanism of fermion mixing, which represents one of its most intriguing aspects. We discuss how this mechanism can be tested in b-quark decays, and how b decays can be used to extract information on physics beyond the SM. We review experimental techniques in b physics, focusing on recent results and highlighting future prospects. Particular attention is devoted to recent results from b decays into a hadron, a lepton and an anti-lepton, that show discrepancies with the SM predictions — the so-called B-physics anomalies — whose statistical significance has been increasing steadily. We discuss these experiments in a detailed manner, and also provide theoretical interpretation of these results in terms of physics beyond the SM.

Book excerpt: We present results on semileptonic B decays obtained with the BABAR detector. The large data set accumulated at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B-Factory allows a new measurement technique, where the hadronic decay of one B meson is fully reconstructed and the semileptonic decay of the recoiling B meson is studied. Traditional analysis techniques of inclusive and exclusive B decays complement this approach with very high statistics data samples. These measurements play an important role in the tests of the description of CP violation in the Standard Model: The determinations of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements V[sub cb] and V[sub ub] provide constraints on the unitarity of the CKM triangle. Furthermore, the experimental measurement of parameters of Heavy Quark Effective Theory test the consistency of the theoretical description of semileptonic B decays.

Events are selected by fully reconstructing the decay of one B meson and identifying a charged lepton from the decay of the other [bar B] meson. IN the first analysis, the measurement of the first and second moment of the hadronic mass distribution in Cabibbo-favored [bar B] [yields] X[sub c][ell][bar [nu]] decays allows for the determination of the nonperturbative parameters [bar [Lambda]] and [lambda][sub 1] of Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET) and V[sub cb]. In the second analysis, the hadronic mass distribution is used to measure the inclusive charmless semileptonic branching fraction and to determine V[sub ub].

Book excerpt: We report recent measurements of rare charmless B decays performed by BaBar. The results are based on the final BaBar dataset of 424 fb−1 collected at the PEP-II B-factory based at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. The study of rare B decays is a key ingredient to meet two of the main goals of the B-factories: assessing the validity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) picture of CP-violation by precisely measuring the elements of the Unitarity Triangle (UT), and searching for hints of New Physics (NP), or otherwise constraining NP scenarios, in processes which are suppressed in the Standard Model (SM). In loop processes, in particular, NP at some higher energy scale may manifest itself in the low energy effective theory as new couplings, such as those introduced by new very massive virtual particles in the loop. In NP searches hadronic uncertainties can play a major role, expecially for branching fraction measurements. Many theoretical uncertainties cancel in ratios of amplitudes, and most NP probes are therefore of this kind. In the following sections we report recent measurements, performed by the BaBar Collaboration, that are relevant to NP searches in charmless hadronic B decays.

Direct CP violation finally appeared in the form of ε′/ε in the K system. Indirect CP violation in B → J/Ψ Ks decay, the raison d'être for construction of e+e- B factories, was first sniffed out at the proton-antiproton collider. The asymmetric B factories — BABAR at SLAC and BELLE at KEK — were completed, while the symmetric B factory at Cornell was upgraded to CLEO-III. It seems that everyone is positioning himself for the great competition on “B Physics and CP Violation”, racing to unravel the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, especially the size and origin of CP phases. The change of millennium provides a dramatic backdrop.To have intensive discussions at the technical level, to create broader interest in the subject, and to maximize interaction between experimenters and theorists, this book starts with the status of B factories: accelerator, detector and physics analysis. Following an overview of B physics and the CKM matrix, it delves into the details of lifetime, spectroscopy and decays, with even more specialized discussions on rare decays, direct and indirect CP violation, factorization and final state interactions, determination of unitarity phases, etc. Topics on ε′/ε, rare K decay, charm and hyperon systems, and various T, CP and CPT tests are also discussed at length. The branching fraction of the decay B[sup 0][yields] K*[sup 0][gamma] has been determined and the corresponding CP asymmetry has been measured.
