Book excerpt: The English / Hawaiian Phrasebook is designed to be used by the English speaker to learn the basics of the Hawaiian language or for a Hawaiian speaker to learn the basics of English. If you are intending to learn any new language, you'll need to get a phrasebook. The purpose of the phrasebook is to give you practice in real-life situations. Memorizing phrases ahead of time is the BEST way to use a phrasebook. Your grammar book, and sometimes even your course, does not give you the "Which room is mine?" kind of phrases. Yes, you will need to flip through the book to find responses or the next question on a different topic, but that is only if you do not practice a bit ahead of time. You can't beat this book - for the price and the small, yet concise and relevant content. Learn how to tell time, order food, as well as greetings and social conversations. This is not your typical tourist phrasebook. It contains over 75 categories of terms in Hawaiian and English with over 4,000 terms, phrases and sentences. Also included is a guide to the Hawaiian alphabet and pronunciation. Proper names may or may not be translated between languages. Generally country names are translated, but personal names, place names, and trade names (products) are not. Some words may provide an alternate translation or transliteration, others may not. This phrasebook is derived from our Words R Us system, a derivative of WordNet. English Wordnet, originally created by Princeton University is a lexical database for the English language. It groups words in English into sets of synonyms called synsets, provides brief definitions and usage examples, and records a series of relationships between these sets of synonyms. WordNet can be viewed as both a combination dictionary and thesaurus.

Book A Dictionary of the Hawaiian Language

Download or read book A Dictionary of the Hawaiian Language written by Lorrin Andrews and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dictionary of the Hawaiian Language: To Which Is Appended an English-Hawaiian Vocabulary In 1836 "A Vocabulary of Words in the Hawaiian Language" was published by Lorrin Andrews. The evident usefulness of this list of about 6000 words led its author to prepare "A Dictionary of the Hawaiian Language" which was issued in 1865. Andrews' dictionary had long been out of print and increasing interest in Polynesian linguistic studies, the need of an authoritative reference book for the spelling, pronunciation, and definition of Hawaiian words, led to arrangements for the preparation of a new Hawaiian dictionary under the direction of the Board of Commissioners of Public Archives. A legislative act of 1913 made provision for "compiling, printing, binding, and publishing in book form a dictionary of the Hawaiian language" in which was to be given "the correct pronunciation of the ancient and modern Hawaiian words and phrases and their respective equivalents or meanings in the English language." As a necessary step in the preparation of a dictionary the Board of Archives transcribed all the words appearing in Andrews' Dictionary. These totaled about 15,000 typewritten cards. Following this preliminary work consideration was given to the selection of a compiler on whom might be placed the responsibility for preparing the desired manuscript. Rev. Henry Hodges Parker was chosen and financial arrangements made whereby he was released from other obligations for the five years following the date of appointment, January 1, 1915. Book Spoken Hawaiian

Download or read book Spoken Hawaiian written by Samuel H. Elbert and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1970-01-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Hawaiian language text, intended for self-learning as well as classroom use, presents the principal conversational and grammatical patterns of the language in 67 lessons, each containing English-Hawaiian dialogues. Emphasis is given to idiomatic speech, and a vocabulary of approximately 800 words, selected on the basis of frequency of usage and cultural importance, is introduced. The frequent humor of the lessons makes Elbert's Spoken Hawaiian an enjoyable learning experience. Also noteworthy is the author's inclusion of old Hawaiian in the text - legends, songs, stories - to enable the student to read the rich Hawaiian traditional literature in the vernacular language. The illustrations by noted artist Jean Charlot are a charming and amusing complement to the text. Spoken Hawaiian will help the student not only to read and speak the language, but at the same time to appreciate the rich heritage of the Hawaiian past and its literature. of the sixty-seven lessons is a sample dialog in Hawaiian with English translation.
