Book Violence and Naming

Download or read book Violence and Naming written by David E. Johnson and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reclaiming the notion of literature as an institution essential for reflecting on the violence of culture, history, and politics, Violence and Naming exposes the tension between the irreducible, constitutive violence of language and the reducible, empirical violation of others. Focusing on an array of literary artifacts, from works by journalists such as Elena Poniatowska and Sergio González Rodríguez to the Zapatista communiqués to Roberto Bolaño's The Savage Detectives and 2666, this examination demonstrates that Mexican culture takes place as a struggle over naming—with severe implications for the rights and lives of women and indigenous persons. Through rereadings of the Conquest of Mexico, the northern Mexican feminicide, the Zapatista uprising in Chiapas, the disappearance of the forty-three students at Iguala in 2014, and the 1999 abortion-rights scandal centering on “Paulina,” which revealed the tenuousness of women’s constitutionally protected reproductive rights in Mexico, Violence and Naming asks how societies can respond to violence without violating the other. This essential question is relevant not only to contemporary Mexico but to all struggles for democracy that promise equality but instead perpetuate incessant cycles of repression.

His skin was turning into fur, his canes expanded, and his claws extended on both his hands and legs. His eyes turn pitch black. After some time, everything calmed down and I felt a soft breath on my face. By smelling the scent I know it's him in his human form. "You are my desire and my only hope to shed away this guilty birth of a werewolf." He grunted pushing me to the wall and holding my cheek tight between his fingers. Bending his head he traced a line with his tongue from the back of my ear to my jaw line and bit me on my neck. "I marked you as mine. Now no one is going to touch you." He made a deathly roar. I look at him in trepid and he whispers softly in my ears after kissing my cheek. "MY HEART CRAVES FOR YOU. MARRY ME, ALEXA SULLIVAN.

Book Gothic Things

  • Author : Jeffrey Andrew Weinstock
  • Publisher : Fordham Univ Press
  • Release : 2023-07-04
  • ISBN : 1531503438

Download or read book Gothic Things written by Jeffrey Andrew Weinstock and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2023-07-04 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering an innovative approach to the Gothic, Gothic Things: Dark Enchantment and Anthropocene Anxiety breaks ground with a new materialist analysis of the genre, highlighting the ways that, since its origins in the eighteenth century, the Gothic has been intensely focused on “ominous matter” and “thing power.” In chapters attending to gothic bodies, spaces, books, and other objects, Gothic Things argues that the Gothic has always been about what happens when objects assume mysterious animacy or potency and when human beings are reduced to the status of just one thing among many—more powerful—others. In exploring how the Gothic insistently decenters the human, Jeffrey Andrew Weinstock reveals human beings to be enmeshed in networks of human and nonhuman forces mostly outside of their control. Gothic Things thus resituates the Gothic as the uncanny doppelgänger of twenty-first-century critical and cultural theory, lurking just beneath the surface (and sometimes explicitly surfacing) as it haunts considerations of how human beings interact with objects and their environment. In these pages the Gothic offers a dark reflection of the contemporary “nonhuman turn,” expressing a twenty-first-century structure of feeling undergirded by anxiety over the fate of the human: spectrality, monstrosity, and apocalypse. Substituting horror for hope, the Gothic, Weinstock explains, has been a philosophical meditation on human relations to the nonhuman since its inception, raising significant questions about how we can counter anthropocentric thought in our quest to live more harmoniously with the world around us.

Download or read book Stories Beyond Belief 2 written by Sarah Ruth Scott and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the following stories have been written in Scotland and Sweden. My research for the Harrington curse took place in Aberlady near North Berwick, Scotland. My latest work, Eight Skulls of Teversham, was written partly in Inverness, taking in the atmosphere of the misty hills of Scotlands highlandssuch a beautiful sight to behold. Double exposure was also created with a location of Scotland in mind, taking me back to my ancestors, the Scott clan, and the famous Sir Walter Scott. The stories created in Sweden were cracked porcelain, which covered a wide area of mental and physical abuse. This fictitious book was based on factual events and concerned itself with the life of Ruth Ashley, a psychiatric nurse. I am convinced that a ghost called Sarah influenced my writing, something called automatic writing. For the Love of Charlotte was written in the United States of America, and I must confess greatly influenced by the 9/11 attack on the twin towers in 2001. Again the writing was influenced by ghosts. It is my dream that sooner or later, someone will read this work and consider writing a screenplay for television or movie. Now wouldnt that be good? Teversham is actually in Cambridgeshire, but for the story, there is one on the Scottish border, both a town and a village where the eight skulls existed. Any similarity is purely coincidental and should not be mistaken for the small village that is in Cambridgeshire.

Book Queer Buccaneers

Download or read book Queer Buccaneers written by Heike Steinhoff and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2011 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pirates captivate the Western cultural imagination at the beginning of the 21st century. Queer Buccaneers addresses this phenomenon through an analysis of the Disney film series Pirates of the Caribbean. Reading the films from a variety of post-structuralist perspectives, this study demonstrates the contradictory discourses and power relations that characterize the series. It argues that 'piracy' constitutes a sliding signifier that facilitates the (de)construction of discursive boundaries of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, class, and nationality. Download or read book Spinegrinder written by Clive Davies and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2015-03-06 with total page 1368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First came video and more recently high definition home entertainment, through to the internet with its streaming videos and not strictly legal peer-to-peer capabilities. With so many sources available, today’s fan of horror and exploitation movies isn’t necessarily educated on paths well-trodden — Universal classics, 1950s monster movies, Hammer — as once they were. They may not even be born and bred on DAWN OF THE DEAD. In fact, anyone with a bit of technical savvy (quickly becoming second nature for the born-clicking generation) may be viewing MYSTICS IN BALI and S.S. EXPERIMENT CAMP long before ever hearing of Bela Lugosi or watching a movie directed by Dario Argento. In this world, H.G. Lewis, so-called “godfather of gore,” carries the same stripes as Alfred Hitchcock, “master of suspense.” SPINEGRINDER is one man’s ambitious, exhaustive and utterly obsessive attempt to make sense of over a century of exploitation and cult cinema, of a sort that most critics won’t care to write about. One opinion; 8,000 reviews (or thereabouts.
