It's a time when children dress in traditional clothing and go from house to house collecting treats from their neighbors. When Noor sees the full moon rising, signaling the coming of Girgian, she and her brothers prepare for the fun. Together, they decorate the bags they'll carry to collect the candies. But along with the fun, Noor remembers the true meaning of Ramadan: spending time with family and sharing with those less fortunate.

These characters - young, gay and lesbian Somalis - must navigate the complexities of family, identity and the immigrant experience as they tumble towards freedom. Set in Kenya, Somalia and South London, these stories are imbued with pathos, passion and linguistic playfulness, marking the arrival of a singular new voice in contemporary fiction. Praise for FAIRYTALES FOR LOST CHILDREN: 'Fantastic writing. I am most highly impressed. I've read some of the stories more than once and saw in each of them plenty of talent everywhere - in every sinew and vein.' - NURUDDIN FARAH 'There is nothing more humbling than good writing except when the author is fiercely beautiful and ferociously generous of heart. That Diriye Osman should possess so much talent is only fair in light of his goodness. Read this book.' - MESHELL NDEGEOCELLO -The characters in these fairy tales are displaced in multiple, complicated ways. But Osman's storytelling creates a shelter for them; a warm place which is both real and imaginary, in which they find political, sexual, and ultimately psychic liberation.' - ALISON BECHDEL 'East Africa. South London. Queer. Displaced. Mentally Ill. My excitement over Osman and his writing comes, in part, out of delight at the impossibility of categorisation.' - ELLAH ALLFREY The Telegraph

Book Somalis in the Twin Cities and Columbus

Download or read book Somalis in the Twin Cities and Columbus written by Stefanie Chambers and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1990s, Somali refugees arrived in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota. Later in the decade, an additional influx of immigrants arrived in a second destination of Columbus, Ohio. These refugees found low-skill jobs in warehouses and food processing plants and struggled as social “outsiders,” often facing discrimination based on their religious traditions, dress, and misconceptions that they are terrorists. The immigrant youth also lacked access to quality educational opportunities. In Somalis in the Twin Cities and Columbus, Stefanie Chambers provides a cogent analysis of these refugees in Midwestern cities where new immigrant communities are growing. Her comparative study uses qualitative and quantitative data to assess the political, economic, and social variations between these urban areas. Chambers examines how culture and history influenced the incorporation of Somali immigrants in the U.S., and recommends policy changes that can advance rather than impede incorporation. Her robust investigation provides a better understanding of the reasons these refugees establish roots in these areas, as well as how these resettled immigrants struggle to thrive.

  • Pages : 196 pages

Download or read book Rebel City written by John Newsinger and published by Merlin Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: REBEL CITY is a study of the great labour revolt in Ireland and of the development of Irish trade unionism and syndicalism. It focuses on the relationship between Larkin and the Dublin labour movement, and considers the influence of syndicalism and Marxism in the theory and activity of James Connolly. Newsinger studies the condition of the Irish Labour in the years running up to the start of World War One: social, economic and cultural conditions, the influence of the Church, gender relations and the campaign for women's suffrage, the ideology of the republican movement, and developing traditions of labour solidarity and militancy. He chronicles the organisation of the Irish Transport and General Workers Union, [ITGWU] and the impact of the IRISH WORKER newspaper. 1913 and 1914 were crucial years in Irish history: Newsinger considers the Dublin lockouts, [also studied by Yeates]. He puts these events in context looking at the relationship between the ITGWU and the Irish Volunteers, the impact of WW1, the formation of the Citizen Army, relations with the British Labour Movement, and Connolly's links with to the Irish Republican Brotherhood. He discusses Sean O'Casey's views of this period and offers new perspectives on the Lock-outs defeat of 1913-14, on the political trajectory of James Connolly, and on the role of the working class in the Easter uprising of 1916.
