Book Summary of ARI Research on Military Delinquency

Download or read book Summary of ARI Research on Military Delinquency written by D. B. Bell and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most ARI research on military delinquency has focused on predicting, at the point of entry, those personnel most likely to commit delinquent acts within a fixed time period (e.g., by the end of Basic Combat Training). Across the variety of investigations which focused on various types of delinquency some consistent findings emerge. Component of service (i.e., volunteers vs. draftees) and several closely associated variables--age at entry, level of education, and mental ability--are associated with delinquent acts; such background data and peer ratings provide the best predictors. Attempts to develop a more precise profile of the military delinquent have not been very successful, and programs aimed at rehabilitation of potential delinquents have actually proved counterproductive. All of these outcomes suggest that future research should concentrate more on the context in which delinquency occurs and less on the characteristics of those who commit delinquent acts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Awol Syndrome The story begins in the fall of 1967 at Fort Bliss, Texas, where the author was assigned to the Eighth Battalion (hkwk), Seventh Artillery. The Army was having an increasingly difficult task dealing with the continuously rising awol rate. The war in Vietnam and the disintegra tion of former concepts of patriotism, law and order and duty seemed to have encouraged men to leave the service rather than serve their two year obligation, adjusting their lives to the Army program and way of life. Large numbers of men would leave almost immediately after ar riving at their training post because of just ordinary homesickness. Book Caring for Veterans and Their Families A Guide for Nurses and Healthcare Professionals

Download or read book Caring for Veterans and Their Families A Guide for Nurses and Healthcare Professionals written by Rita F D’Aoust and published by Jones & Bartlett Learning. This book was released on 2021-11-08 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the approximately 20 million veterans of the U.S. armed forces, less than half utilize the Veteran's Health Administration health care system. That means the majority of veterans are receiving care from nurses and healthcare professionals who may not be trained in treating or caring for patients who have served in the military. This unique book guides nurses and healthcare professionals through the specific set of needs veterans can present, including but not limited to PTSD. Topics covered include, defining military culture and how to apply that knowledge to provide informed treatment, transitioning from service to civilian life and the many challenges expected during re-adjustment and re-entry, recognizing and treating substance use disorders, identifying suicidal behaviors and warning signs, long-term care for elderly veterans, and many more topics unique to the healthcare of veterans.

  • Author : Mark Russell
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press

Download or read book Psychiatric Casualties written by Mark Russell and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The psychological toll of war is vast, and the social costs of war’s psychiatric casualties extend even further. Yet military mental health care suffers from extensive waiting lists, organizational scandals, spikes in veteran suicide, narcotic overprescription, shortages of mental health professionals, and inadequate treatment. The prevalence of conditions such as post–traumatic stress disorder is often underestimated, and there remains entrenched stigma and fear of being diagnosed. Even more alarming is how the military dismisses or conceals the significance and extent of the mental health crisis. The trauma experts Mark C. Russell and Charles Figley offer an impassioned and meticulous critique of the systemic failures in military mental health care in the United States. They examine the persistent disconnect between war culture, which valorizes an appearance of strength and seeks to purge weakness, and the science and treatment of trauma. Instead of reckoning with the mental health crisis, the military has neglected the needs of service members. It has discharged, prosecuted, and incarcerated a large number of people struggling with the psychological realities of war, and it has inflicted humiliation, ridicule, and shame on many more. Through a far-reaching historical account, Russell and Figley detail how the military has perpetuated a self-inflicted crisis. The book concludes with actionable prescriptions for change and a comprehensive approach to significantly improving military mental health.
