Book Pacific War Reversal 7 December 1941 January 1943

Download or read book Pacific War Reversal 7 December 1941 January 1943 written by Colonel Roy M. Stanley II, USAF (Ret.) and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-10-12 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Merriam Press World War 2 History Series. Well-known military historian Col. Roy M. Stanley II presents the second volume of his series on World War II in the Pacific. Like the first volume, it is essentially a photo book with accompanying text, drawing heavily from DOD Intelligence and Army files, National Archives and numerous other sources. What is offered, to both the casual reader and the military history buff, is his 27 years of military experience and skill as a photo interpreter to draw information from the imagery. Stanley considers photos, particularly aerial photos, an "original source" equal to first-hand testimony. Many photos were found at random during reviews of DOD imagery holdings he was responsible for, but actively searched for pictures of Guadalcanal. There were no indexes for the boxes he was screening, but one of his goals was to assemble everything on "The Canal." Coverage includes Coral Sea and Midway battles. Well illustrated with hundreds of photos, illustrations, and maps.

Book The Secret History of MI6

Download or read book The Secret History of MI6 written by Keith Jeffery and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2010-09-21 with total page 806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authorized history of the world's oldest and most storied foreign intelligence service, drawing extensively on hitherto secret documents Britain's Special Intelligence Service, commonly called MI6, is not only the oldest and most storied foreign intelligence unit in the world - it is also the only one to open its archives to an outside researcher. The result, in this authorized history, is an unprecedented and revelatory look at an organization that essentially created, over the course of two world wars, the modern craft of spying. Here are the true stories that inspired Ian Fleming's James Bond's novels and John le Carré George Smiley novels. Examining innovations from invisible ink and industrial-scale cryptography to dramatic setbacks like the Nazi sting operations to bag British operatives, this groundbreaking history is as engrossing as any thriller - and much more revealing. "Perhaps the most authentic account one will ever read about how intelligence really works." -The Washington Times

Book Prevail until the Bitter End

Download or read book Prevail until the Bitter End written by Alexandra Lohse and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2021-10-15 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Prevail until the Bitter End, Alexandra Lohse explores the gossip and innuendo, the dissonant reactions and perceptions of Germans to the violent dissolution of the Third Reich. Mobilized for total war, soldiers and citizens alike experienced an unprecedented convergence of military, economic, social, and political crises. But even in retreat, the militarized national community unleashed ferocious energies, staving off defeat for over two years and continuing a systematic murder campaign against European Jews and others. Was its faith in the Führer never shaken by the prospect of ultimate defeat? Lohse uncovers how Germans experienced life and death, investigates how mounting emergency conditions affected their understanding of the nature and purpose of the conflagration, and shows how these factors influenced the people's relationship with the Nazi regime. She draws on Nazi morale and censorship reports, features citizens' private letters and diaries, and incorporates a large body of Allied intelligence, including several thousand transcripts of surreptitiously recorded conversations among German prisoners of war in Western Allied captivity. Lohse's historical reconstruction helps us understand how ordinary Germans interpreted their experiences as both the victims and perpetrators of extreme violence. We are immersively drawn into their desolate landscape: walking through bombed-out streets, scrounging for food, burning furniture, listening furtively to Allied broadcasts, unsure where the truth lies. Prevail until the Bitter End is about the stories that Germans told themselves to make sense of this world in crisis.
