Download or read book Cool Shades written by Vanessa Brown and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cool Shades provides the first in-depth exploration of the enduring appeal of sunglasses in visual culture, both historically and today. Ubiquitous in fashion, advertising, film and graphic design, sunglasses are the ultimate signifier of 'cool' in mass culture; a powerful attribute pervading much fashion and pop cultural imagery which has received little scholarly attention until now. Accessible and highly engaging, this book offers an original history of how sunglasses became a fashion accessory in the early twentieth century, and addresses the complex variety of meanings they have the power to articulate, through associations with vision, light, glamour, darkness, fashion, speed and technology in the context of modernity. Cool Shades will be of great interest to students of fashion, design, visual and material culture, cultural studies and sociology, as well as general readers fascinated by this iconic fashion staple.

Download or read book From Whence I Came written by Brian Murphy and published by Merrion Press. This book was released on 2021-03-08 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elected in 1960 as the 35th President of the USA, John Fitzgerald Kennedy remains to this day the office’s youngest incumbent and he was its first Roman Catholic. His term in office was short, but arguably no US President has inspired more people around the globe than JFK. Even today, for generations born decades after his death, President Kennedy’s legacy has an enduring appeal. This insightful book contains specially commissioned pieces by a range of respected academic and political figures, including former Obama speechwriter, Cody Kennan, the President of the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights organisation, Kerry Kennedy, and former senior adviser to Bernie Sanders, Tad Devine. With the presidency of Joe Biden seeing a renewed focus on broader themes within Irish, American and global politics, From Whence I Came is a fascinating and timely collection that offers a fresh perspective on the Kennedy legacy and the politics of Ireland and the United States.
Download or read book The Return written by Daniel Treisman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-01-04 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A refreshing and deeply reported look at the political, economic, and cultural changes in Russia, with an in-depth examination of Vladimir Putin’s rise, the power of the oligarchy, and what it means for the world. Almost twenty-five years after Mikhail Gorbachev began radically reshaping his country, Russia has changed beyond recognition. In his third book on this subject, Professor Daniel Treisman takes stock of the country that has emerged from the debris of Soviet communism and addresses the questions that preoccupy scholars of its history and politics: Why did the Soviet Union disintegrate? Could its collapse have been avoided? Did Yeltsin destroy too much or too little of the Soviet political order? What explains Putin’s unprecedented popularity with the Russian public? Based on two decades of research and his own experiences in the country, Treisman cuts through the scholarly and journalistic debates to provide a portrait of a country returning to the international community on its own terms. At a time when global politics are more important than ever, The Return illuminates the inner workings of a country that has increasingly come to influence, and which will continue to shape, American foreign policy and world events.

Download or read book Voyage to Te Wai Pounamu written by Lee Traynor and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2014-09-12 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holidaying in New Zealand and adventure activities like bungee jumping, canyon swinging, and jetboating up wild rivers are virtually synonymous. But there are other adventures that this country–one of the most isolated in the world–offers. Finding them may not be that easy, nor is getting there and back in one piece. Lee Traynor has therefore explored the two main southern islands of New Zealand: The South Island (Te Wai Pounamu) and Stewart Island, and undertaken a number of shorter and longer hikes (tramps). Among these are the Great Walks of the Abel Tasman Coastal Track, the Kepler Track, and the Milford Track. These three tracks, each with its own distinct personality, are set in spectacular landscapes found only in New Zealand. The utmost technical challenge is, however, the ten-day North-West Circuit of Stewart Island (which includes parts of the Rakiura Track, another Great Walk), a trek through temperate rainforests, all but impassable muddy tracks, and across extensive coastal sand dunes reminiscent of the south-eastern coast of Australia. Lee Traynor recounts the preparations and the two months spent in New Zealand travelling around these southern islands and his adventures on and off the track. Lavishly illustrated with over 175 colour photographs and maps, and 20 black and white photos and diagrams.
